
Local farmer engagement key to water management, says Nagaland University study
Led by Prof Prabhakar Sharma of Nagaland University, the study found that success was not uniform. In Meyar, farmers took active responsibility for maintaining recharge pits and saw clear benefits. In contrast, in Nekpur, where farmers lacked trust in the technology and did not maintain the pits, ASR structures fell into disuse.Prof Sharma stated, 'Unlike many prior studies that mainly focus on the technical feasibility and hydrogeological aspects of ASR, this research distinctly foregrounds the social, institutional and policy dimensions critical for sustainable implementation.'SOUTH BIHAR PILOT DEMONSTRATED SOCIO-ECONOMIC GAINSThe pilot study, supported by a grant from the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, found that ASR significantly improved groundwater recharge, made irrigation more reliable, and enabled additional cropping cycles, thereby improving farmer incomes.The average cost of setting up an ASR pit was approximately USD 400, making it a relatively affordable solution. However, due to financial constraints, most farmers preferred external support or public funding to initiate the process.EXPERTS CALL FOR ADAPTIVE POLICY AND INCLUSIVE PLANNINGCo-author Dr Aviram Sharma of the University of Vigo, Spain, emphasised the need for tailor-made strategies: 'Future interventions must incorporate localised adaptation strategies, financial mechanisms for farmer participation, and long-term monitoring of groundwater trends for measuring the impacts of the ASR pits on groundwater aquifers.'

The study recommends beginning with medium and large farmers who are more invested in agriculture and could serve as early adopters, encouraging others to follow. New Delhi, Aug 12 (PTI) Cohance Lifesciences on Tuesday announced a strategic investment of USD 10 million (around Rs 87.6 crore) to expand bioconjugation capabilities at its US-based subsidiary, NJ Bio. The investment advances Cohance's global expansion in niche technology-led modalities, enhancing its ability to support innovators from early development through late-phase clinical supply, the company said in a statement. The common good manufacturing practices (cGMP) compliant bioconjugation suite at NJ Bio's Princeton, New Jersey, facility significantly strengthens the company's capabilities to deliver fully integrated Antibody-Drug Conjugate (ADC) solutions, it added. 'The investment … strengthening our footprint in the rapidly growing ADC space. By integrating payload-linker development and bioconjugation capabilities under one roof, NJ Bio will be well-positioned to support accelerated development timelines and help bring life-saving therapies to patients faster," Vivek Sharma, Executive Chairman, Cohance Lifesciences, said. In a separate statement, Cohance announced a Rs 23 crore investment and significant progress on its new oligonucleotide building block manufacturing facility in Hyderabad. Three new antlion species identified in Western Ghats
1 2 3 Kochi: Kerala's insect biodiversity gained additions with the identification of three species of antlions from the tribe Palparini —Indopalpares pardus, Palpares contrarius and Stenares harpyia— recorded for the first time from this region of the Western Ghats. These insects prey on ants and in the adult stage. The lifespan of an adult, however, is restricted to just a month for reproduction before they perish, researchers said. The discovery by a research team from Shadpada Entomology Research Lab (SERL) of Christ College, Thrissur, has been published in the internationally noted Journal of Insect Biodiversity and Systematics. The species have been widely reported in north Indian states like Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Odisha. "We have not reported so many different species of antlions in the state. The only popular one is the commonly seen 'Kuzhiyana'. As part of our study, we collected samples of these species from north and south Kerala districts," said Suryanarayanan T B, researcher and assistant professor at St Aloysius College. The Indopalpares pardus, a widely distributed species previously reported from Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha and other northern states, has now been recorded from Vazhayur in Malappuram district. Meanwhile, Palpares contrarius was found in several locations across Kerala, including Kattilapara and Rosemala (Kollam), Kolahalamedu (Idukki), Kuthuparamba (Kannur), Payamthondu (Kozhikode), Pudunagaram (Palakkad) and Thirunelly (Wayanad). Earlier records of this species are known from Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Mizoram. Stenares harpyia, earlier restricted to Tamil Nadu and Telangana, has now been discovered in Gavi (Pathanamthitta), Thirunelly (Wayanad) and Vallakkadavu (Idukki), extending its known range significantly into southern Western Ghats. "In the adult stage, these species of antlions look like dragonflies, so not many have linked them to ants. People have photographed them, but no one has studied them in depth and scientifically," said Bijoy C, head of SERL and assistant professor of Christ College. This reinforces the crucial role that academic institutions and local biodiversity surveys play in filling the gaps in India's faunal inventory, particularly for lesser-known insect groups like antlions, he added. Experts from MNNIT join hands with IIIT-Gwalior, PEC to develop high speed antenna for 6G comm
Prayagraj: Experts from three institutions-- MNNIT-Allahabad, IIIT-Gwalior and PEC Chandigarh-- are jointly developing a high-speed antenna for 6G communication that could revolutionise mobile data transfer in the country. The antenna aims to boost current transmission speeds from 1 gigabyte per second (GB/s) to a staggering 1 terabyte per second (TB/s). "Once made, the antenna is expected to eliminate common mobile network issues such as voice call drops and busy networks. It will also enhance the capability of limited bandwidth systems to serve a higher number of users with improved connectivity," said Anand Sharma, Assistant Professor in the electronics and communication engineering (ECE) Department at MNNIT. As development progresses, this breakthrough positions India at the forefront of next-generation telecommunications technology, he added. Sharma, along with Pinku Ranjan from the IIIT-Gwalior and Gaurav Das from Punjab Engineering College (PEC) Chandigarh, is working on the project sanctioned by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Govt of India.
