Lando Norris holds off Oscar Piastri in McLaren one-two at Hungarian GP

Irish Times3 days ago
Lando Norris won the
Hungarian Grand Prix
after taking advantage in an absolutely gripping, tense strategic battle to pull off a one-stop coup for McLaren and beat his team-mate Oscar Piastri into second by just seven-tenths of a second after an extraordinary, dramatic finale that went to the wire.
George Russell was third for Mercedes and Charles Leclerc fourth for Ferrari, with Fernando Alonso fifth for Aston Martin. Lewis Hamilton could manage only 12th for Ferrari after he endured a poor qualifying.
Norris won after a bad start saw him drop places and he was forced to take a counter one-stop strategy, where his rivals all opted for two stops. It meant he was chased down hard at the end by Piastri on fresher tyres but as the pair vied furiously in the final five laps, Norris emerged on top and has closed the gap to his title rival Piastri to just nine points.
After the huge disappointment and frustration with himself when he misjudged a move against Piastri that resulted in hitting his team-mate and was forced to retire in Canada, he followed it up with a consummate win in Austria and then Silverstone and is on something of a roll. Not only is it his first win in Hungary but now his third in four races and absolutely vital in his closely-fought title fight with Piastri.

Heading into the F1 summer break firmly on the front foot is the perfect preparation for the holidays, but the British driver might feel he would rather race on while he is on form, with his fifth win this year.
Leclerc had held his lead from pole into turn one but Norris fell backwards, after looking to go up the inside but he had to back off and dropped to fifth, behind Russell and Alonso. It was a crucial moment.
Passing in dirty air through the relentless sequence of corners, Leclerc was able to take advantage, swiftly opening a two-second lead on Piastri. Norris did make a place back, passing Alonso on lap three, however he clearly had little chance against the other three cars in front.

Piastri pitted on lap 19 looking for an undercut on Leclerc. He charged on his out lap and Leclerc covered it off a lap later. Ferrari pulled off a superb two-second stop – the joint fastest of the season – and he emerged still just in front of Piastri, while Norris stayed out, with McLaren considering the chance of him pulling off a one-stop strategy.
Max Verstappen
meanwhile, vying for 11th place, went at Hamilton at the inside of turn four, in what was an impossibly optimistic move, forcing the British driver off the road to avoid a collision.
Norris pitted on lap 31 leaving him 39 to make it to the end on his new hard tyres and with a very quick stop he emerged in fourth, 19 seconds behind Leclerc, Piastri and Russell who all had to stop again, putting Norris very much in the mix for the win.
Norris had to manage his tyres but also maintain the pressure on the cars in front and he duly began to bring the gap down. By lap 38 the gap to Leclerc was down to 15 seconds.
Leclerc pitted on lap 41 for his second stop as Piastri switched focus to staying in front of Norris as he was now the major threat. Norris had caught Russell by lap 42 but was not held up long as Mercedes pitted their man a lap later.
The race hung in the balance when Piastri stopped on lap 45, pointedly focusing on beating his championship rival, not Leclerc. With the stops having played out Norris had track position and held the lead with 25 laps to go and a seven-second lead on Leclerc, with Piastri and Russell in third and fourth but on fresher rubber.
Piastri charged at Leclerc, who was struggling for grip and furious with his team for the setup on his car, and claimed second with an easy pass on lap 50. He was now nine seconds behind Norris with 19 laps remaining.

Russell passed Leclerc for third on lap 62 despite some fierce defending for which he was later penalised. By this point Piastri had caught Norris just as he came up on more traffic. Piastri moved into DRS range as his rival struggled in the dirty air.
As the pair cleared the traffic they were line astern with four laps to go in a straight fight, Piastri hurling himself at his team-mate through turn one, including a desperate dive and lock-up, but there was no way through as Norris held his nerve under immense pressure to take a remarkable win.
Gabriel Bortoleto was sixth for Sauber, Lance Stroll seventh for Aston Martin, Liam Lawson eighth for Racing Bulls, Verstappen ninth for Red Bull and Kimi Antonelli 10th for Mercedes.
In Formula Two, Ireland's
Alex Dunne
finished ninth in Sunday's feature race, seeing him fall back to fifth in the drivers' standings.
The Rodin Motosport driver started from ninth on the grid, which he maintained by the finish despite battling up to sixth for a spell following a virtual safety car early in the race.
The result earned the 19-year-old two points towards his drivers' championship tally, adding to the eight he secured with his second-place finish in Saturday's sprint race.
Dunne, with 124 points, is just one adrift of fourth-place Luke Browning (Hitech TGR) in the drivers' title race, but 30 points back on front-runner Leonardo Fornaroli (Invicta Racing) with four rounds remaining.

Britain's 9 WORST selling cars revealed – including £80k Fast and Furious-inspired motor & ‘king of weird' retro classic

They are not all necessarily bad vehicles BRITAIN'S least popular cars in terms of sales have been revealed. One of the losers to make it to the list includes a super rare Fast and Furious-inspired MG. Advertisement 9 The Vauxhall Adam Rocks was taken off sale after three years in 2018 Credit: Handout Vauxhall Adam Rocks But first, let's kick things off with the Vauxhall Adam Rocks, which had the makings of a nippy little motor. However, after just three years, the car manufacturer revealed that they were taking it off the market. Launched for the UK market in early 2014, it used the standard Adam's platform but added a rugged flair. The car had 15 mm of raised ride height, plastic cladding, skid plates and a retractable fabric sunroof that folded in just seconds to give a semi‑convertible experience with SUV styling cues. Advertisement Rocks models started from about £14,695 for the base 1.2-litre version, rising to around £16,695 for the turbo‑charged 1.0‑litre Ecotec unit with around 113 bhp. Mercedes R-Class 9 This Mercedes-Benz R 350 was said to be ahead of the SUV boom curve Credit: Getty Mercedes pitched the R‑Class as a 'grand sports tourer'. It was spacious enough for up to seven occupants and packed with luxury touches. Advertisement Engine options ranged from smooth petrol and diesel V6 units to rare V8s, including a short‑lived R 63 AMG with a 6.2 litre V8 producing over 500 hp—making it one of the fastest seven‑seat vehicles ever. Yet, despite these impressive details, the R‑Class struggled on the market. Its shapeshifting identity—neither true SUV nor comfortable minivan—left buyers uncertain. Fast and the Furious legends meet for the first time in franchise's history The model, priced from around £44,620, withdrew from the UK market in late 2013. Advertisement MG XPower SV-R model 9 The MG XPower SV-R is a Fast & Furious-inspired, super rare MG dubbed slightly mad Credit: Jam Press/DM Historics Inspired by the Fast and Furious films, the XPower SV-R can do 0-60mph in just five seconds, and has a 4.6 litre V8 325 bhp engine. Unveiled in the early 2000s, the SV‑R was built on the Qvale Mangusta platform, created by McLaren F1 designer Peter Stevens with aggressive styling, wide arches, prominent air intakes, and a carbon‑fibre and aluminium body. The asking price when new was approximately £82,000–£83,000 for the SV‑R variant. Advertisement Unfortunately, that price proved a major obstacle: MG Rover couldn't sell more than a handful of units. Only 82 cars in total were built between 2003 and 2005 (including prototypes and standard SVs), with as few as nine SV‑R units reportedly sold to actual customers before the company collapsed in April 2005. Lotus Europa 9 This is a 2006 black Lotus Europa S car Credit: Alamy The 2006 Lotus Europa S was a curious detour in Lotus's otherwise razor-focused lineup of lightweight sports cars. Advertisement Introduced as a more refined, road-friendly alternative to the hardcore Elise, the Europa S was based on the same bonded aluminium chassis but featured a longer wheelbase, more comfortable cabin, and a turbocharged 2.0-litre GM-sourced engine producing around 200 bhp. However, it failed to impress as it lacked the practicality to compete with more luxurious rivals like the Porsche Cayman. Only around 458 Europa S models and just 48 Europa SEs were produced before the car was quietly discontinued in 2010. Renault Vel Satis 9 A silver Renault Vel Satis van that's model came in 2002 Credit: Alamy Advertisement This French car lasted just three years in the UK, as sales topped just at 1,000. Ironically, the Vel Satis was designed as a concept car, but was not the most appealing of vehicles. It also came at a time when it was up against BMWs, Mercedes and the Ford Scorpio. The Vel Satis came available with five engine options, and had a squishy nature to it. Advertisement However, it perhaps had too much weight to it, with the centre of gravity to high, and not the greatest to drive. But there were some positive aspects, such as being insanely comfortable on the interior, and having a well-appointed cabin that was spacious. Vauxhall Meriva 9 Vauxhall was known to VXR everything including the Meriva Credit: Check Copyright Slated for its bland styling, boring driving dynamics and underwhelming interior quality, the Vauxhall Meriva failed to impress. Advertisement Despite clever features like rear-hinged FlexDoors and versatile seating system, the Meriva was often left at the bottom of the pile, as motorists leaned towards SUVs and crossovers. By 2017, Vauxhall quietly replaced it with the more SUV-like Crossland X, marking the end of the Meriva's run. It was given a 178bhp turbo engine in the Meriva OAP-mobile, and achieved 272 sales in four years. Chevrolet SSR 9 The Super Sport Roadster started manufacturing in 2003 Credit: The Super Sport Roads Advertisement This is essentially a pickup truck with RWD and has no off-roading ability. Sales for the Chevvy SSR therefore did not go great, even despite its folding hard-top roof. It even had factory layoffs due to its lack of success. Chevrolet admitted defeat of the SSR in 2006, with just 9,000 sales. Advertisement Aston Martin Virage 9 Aston Martin Virage Credit: Handout Only 426 Virages were made between 1988 and 1995, but this did not stop music icon Sir Elton John wanting the luxury car. He forked out £129,950 to get his hands on one, but sold it in 1997. Sitting between the DB9 and more hardcore DBS, it can be described as a GT two-door coupe with a Jekyll and Hyde personality. Advertisement The Virage can go from long-distance cruiser at comfortable speeds well in excess of 150mph, to an out-and-out supercar. But Aston quietly canned the car 18 months after it launched. Renault Avantime 9 The Renault Avantime is a grand tourer manufactured by Matra between 2001 and 2003 Credit: Getty Sales of the Renault Avantime was very low, with only about 450 sold in the UK and 8,557 over the three years it was on the market. Advertisement The company had originally projected sales of 1,500 per year in the UK. Though with its unique design and rarity, the Avantime could be a future classic. The car did gain a cult following later, but sales performance was still far below expectations.

There is hope a resolution will be found after positive talks Fury road Moment that caused F1 team to boycott Sky Sports revealed as Lance Stroll has X-rated meltdown at British GP THIS is the X-rated moment that sparked a stunning Aston Martin BOYCOTT of Sky Sports Germany. Last weekend it was revealed by Ralf Schumacher that the Silverstone-based Formula One team was refusing to do interviews with the broadcaster. Stroll, 26, had enjoyed a strong run to P7 in the chaotic race despite qualifying down in P18 the day before. Schumacher, 50, had said: "I have to say, this statement is very disappointing, and quite honestly, it's a question of manners. You have to imagine the public perception of it. "The mechanics who work day in, day out so that the two of them can race - and then the boss's son comes along and says: 'Wonderful, and with such a s*** car'. It's unspeakable and doesn't indicate a good upbringing. "I really don't know what film he's living in, but it's a shame to ruin his own result like that. Dear Lance, apologise to the team." The German's comments were the straw which broke the camel's back regarding Aston's feelings about their coverage being unbalanced before banning interviews with them. While this move is not a blanket ban, one-on-one style interviews between team members and the organisation have been ruled out over the feeling of biased coverage. Advertisement BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK Schumacher had revealed the ban before the race at the Hungarian Grand Prix, adding: "I know they're not giving us any more interviews because they don't like us that much at the moment." His colleague Peter Hardenacke added: 'We were a bit too critical of the people at Aston Martin.' However, positive talks have taken place and it is hoped a resolution will soon be reached between the team and broadcaster, who are said to have admitted some of their comments and coverage were too harsh. SunSport have contacted Sky Germany for further comment. Following the Hungarian Grand Prix, the F1 season is now entering its summer shutdown. Advertisement The next races in the calendar are now not scheduled until the end of August in Max Verstappen's home race of the Dutch Grand Prix. McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris lead the drivers championship with just nine points separating them, with current top dog Piastri trailed by Verstappen by a staggering 97 points. Aston Martin pair Fernando Alonso and Stroll sit P11 and P12 in the standings with 26 points apiece, propping the team up to sixth in the constructor's. 3

Villarreal fans decry Thomas Partey's proposed signing as club's ‘darkest day'

News that former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is poised to join Villarreal has roiled fans of the Spanish club, with hundreds signing a petition urging the club to halt what has been described as the 'darkest day in the club's history'. Partey appeared in a London court on Tuesday, charged with five counts of rape relating to two women, and a charge of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences are said to have taken place in 2021 and 2022 when Partey was playing for Arsenal. Partey's lawyer has said he denies all the charges. Partey was granted conditional bail on Tuesday, and the chief magistrate told the court he understood that the 32-year-old would soon be moving to Spain. Villarreal have agreed to sign the Ghana international on a one-year contract with an option to extend by 12 months. The news came as a shock to Villarreal fans, said Rahul Lakhani, a football journalist and La Liga expert behind the La Liga London account. 'It's rocked the community,' Lakhani said. 'I've had people in my social media responding quite aggressively to me, saying he's innocent until he's proven guilty. But the overarching reaction is that Villarreal fans don't want their names associated with him.' READ MORE Scores of fans have voiced their opposition to the move on social media, using a hashtag that translates as No to Thomas Partey. Others have passed around contact details for the club's official channels, urging people to complain. As Arsenal gear up to host Villarreal in a friendly on Wednesday, Lakhani described Partey's potential signing as a 'stain' on Villarreal, a club long deeply intertwined with its hometown of 50,000 people. 'They're seen as someone who isn't like Real Madrid or Barcelona, or the Big Six,' he said. 'They're the antithesis of that – they're a club that has helped their community a lot, they're seen as a family-run club.' Partey's arrival would probably alter this image, he said: 'Their name is now going to be associated with wanting to sign someone who has five [rape] charges over his head, rather than being known as a club that plays good football or punches above their weight.' More than 800 people have signed a petition that describes the move as a 'slap in the face' to the club's supporters and 'all victims of sexual abuse worldwide'. The petition was launched by the online content hub Villarreal Report, which this week said the signing would be 'an act of pure betrayal of the highest order' against the club's supporters and Villarreal's values. 'The darkest day in the club's history is drawing closer by the second,' it said on social media. Villarreal did not respond to a request for comment. Earlier this year, as Partey's contract with Arsenal neared its expiry date, the north London club confirmed they were in talks over a new contract. After they failed to agree a new deal, it emerged that Partey, who has played for Atlético Madrid, Mallorca and Almería, was instead heading to Spain. He was charged days after he left Arsenal, after an investigation that began in 2022. Partey's lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, has previously said he 'denies all the charges against him' and that he welcomed 'the opportunity to finally clear his name'. Some Villarreal fans have embraced the prospective signing, hinting at the deep divisions sowed by Partey's expected arrival. 'For Villarreal it's a top signing, I think it's great for the team,' said Borja Jiménez Ortega, who heads the L'Os Groc supporters' club in Madrid. 'I have a lot of confidence in the club.' The view was widely shared among the 60 members of his fans group, he said. 'There's just two or three who don't want him.' Others pointed to the wider message being sent by the club. 'I'm against this signing,' said César Márquez Trabado, the president of the supporters' club Peña Amarilla Villafranca de los Barros. 'It's true that he would fit in very well at Villarreal because he's a player of tremendous quality, but I believe that there are ethical limits that should not be crossed, even if the player has not been convicted of the charges against him.' It was a view shared by many, he said. 'I would say that 90 per cent of fans are against this,' he said. 'Because in the end, the team may improve in the short term. But in the long term, this will do a lot of damage to our image.' – Guardian
