Man admits trying to smuggle 850 protected turtles worth £1 million to Hong Kong
The turtles, with an estimated market value of 1.4 million dollars (£1 million), were intercepted by law enforcement at a border inspection, prosecutors said. Officers saw them bound and taped inside knotted socks within the shipping boxes.
Eastern box turtles and three-toed box turtles feature colourful markings and are a 'prized feature' in the domestic and foreign pet market, particularly in China and Hong Kong, prosecutors said.
The reptiles are protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
Lin also shipped 11 other parcels filled with reptiles, including venomous snakes, prosecutors said.
He faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced on December 23.

A DRIVING school boss who made sexist, racist and homophobic remarks has lost a £2million court battle with 20 instructors. John Benson was ruled to have bullied Benson School of Motoring staff. Joanthan Hodge, consultant solicitor at Aquabridge Law which represented the claimants, commended the instructors for their 'bravery' in taking on Benson. He told The Sun: 'My clients spent five years litigating against the Benson School of Motoring in the High Court, and sought no compensation. 'All they wanted was to be released from an environment in which John Benson controlled them through fear and intimidation. I'm a driving instructor and here is how to avoid failing your test 'When presented with their claims, Mr Benson engaged a large team of lawyers who brought counterclaims against my clients for millions of pounds – all of which were dismissed. 'My clients could only sustain this hard-fought case by sticking together. "The judgment identifies their bravery in standing up to Mr Benson, confirming their fears were well placed.'
