
In Photos: First Ever ‘Fake' Total Solar Eclipse Created In Space
The European Space Agency has published the first spectacular images of an artificial solar eclipse created in orbit. The pioneering images are from its Proba-3 mission, which features two satellites that fly in formation with millimeter precision, allowing scientists to study the sun's corona without waiting for rare natural eclipses. It's also the world's first precision formation flying mission.
Launched on December 5, 2024, from India, Proba-3 is a two-year mission during which a total solar eclipse will be created for six hours in every 19.6-hour orbit. 'Our 'artificial eclipse' images are comparable with those taken during a natural eclipse," said Andrei Zhukov, Principal Investigator for ASPIICS at the Royal Observatory of Belgium.

'The difference is that we can create our eclipse once every 19.6-hour orbit, while total solar eclipses only occur naturally around once, very rarely twice a year. On top of that, natural total eclipses only last a few minutes, while Proba-3 can hold its artificial eclipse for up to 6 hours.'
One satellite, the Occulter, acts as an artificial moon, blocking the sun's light using a 1.4-meter-diameter disc. It flies exactly 150 meters in front of the Coronagraph satellite, covering the bright disc of the sun and casting an 8 cm shadow across onto its imager — mimicking how a total solar eclipse works on Earth.

The ASPIICS instrument captures the solar corona in two different 'spectral lines', each line corresponding to a different element contained in the coronal gases. This image shows observations in the coronal green line – a spectral line emitted by iron atoms that lost half of their electrons due to extremely high temperatures. This allows us to see the hottest contents of the corona, at up to 2 million degrees. On the upper left side, a hot loop can be seen extending from the Sun's surface into the corona, a structure which generally appears following a solar flare.
Such a feat of engineering is essential to capture images of the sun's corona — the outer atmosphere of the sun. Only during a total solar eclipse can the corona be glimpsed from Earth's surface, and even then, only for a few minutes from any one location.
The solar corona is a mysterious place. It reaches temperatures of over two million degrees Fahrenheit, significantly hotter than the sun's surface. Understanding this mysterious layer is essential for solar physicists because it's the origin of solar wind and space weather that can impact Earth's communications and power systems.

The mission is based on some remarkable engineering. The Proba-3 satellites follow a highly elliptical 19.6-hour orbit ranging from 373 miles (600 km) at perigee to 37,000 miles (60,000 km) at apogee, flying in precision formation only near apogee. At apogee, they're as far away from Earth's gravitational force and atmospheric drag, enabling them to fly in formation autonomously, achieving eclipse-like conditions for six hours.
The images you see here are created from three exposures and were processed by the ASPIICS Science Operations Centre at Belgium's Royal Observatory. 'Each full image – covering the area from the occulted sun all the way to the edge of the field of view – is actually constructed from three images," said Zhukov. 'The difference between those is only the exposure time, which determines how long the coronagraph's aperture is exposed to light. Combining the three images gives us the full view of the corona.'
The paired Proba-3 satellites will have a highly elliptical orbit with an apogee (or top of orbit) ... More of around 60 000 km and perigee of 600 km. ESA has an open data policy, with all uncalibrated data and images available online to scientists and eclipse enthusiasts alike. Proba-3's mission will last two years, during which approximately 1,000 hours of solar corona images will be gathered. Once it runs out of propellant, it will de-orbit and burn up in Earth's atmosphere.

The Perseid meteor shower will peak next week, producing one of the most impressive sights in the night sky. According to Royal Museums Greenwich - which includes the Royal Observatory - the annual meteor shower's period of activity runs from 17 July to 24 August this year, but hits its peak on the night of Tuesday 12 August. The Perseid shower is said to be one of the most dramatic spectacles to witness in the night sky at this time of year, and is a highlight due to the brightness of its meteors and their high hourly rate. This year it also coincides with August's full moon, known as the Sturgeon Moon. The best time to watch the Perseid Meteor Shower According to Royal Museums Greenwich, the best time to see the Perseids is between midnight on Tuesday (12 August) and 5:30am, when the hourly rate could hit 150. People will be able to spot many bright fast meteors with trains, it says. It advises: "The radiant of the Perseids is actually always above the horizon as seen from the UK, which means that observers in the UK should be able to see some meteors as soon as the Sun sets. Therefore, it is worth looking up in the early evening. "It is always ideal to try to spot meteors when the Moon is below the horizon or when it is in its crescent phase, otherwise it acts as natural light pollution and prevents the fainter meteors from being visible." The peak of the shower is three days after the full moon, it adds, which means condition "are unfortunately not favourable" for seeing the peak. How to watch the Perseid Meteor Shower It's possible to look for the Perseids wherever you are, says Royal Museums Greenwich, certain places will up your chances of seeing meteors. A good tip is to reduce the amount of light pollution in your field of view, it says, which could mean heading to the countryside, a park or even just turning your back on street lamps. "Give your eyes at least 15 minutes to adjust to the dark so that you can catch more of the fainter meteors – this does mean that you should avoid looking at your phone!", it adds. It says meteors can appear in any part of the sky so the more of the sky you can see, the better. "Find an area with a clear view of the horizon away from trees and buildings. Binoculars and telescopes are not necessary as they will restrict the size of the sky that will be visible to you." Other advise is to plan ahead and check the weather forecast, and if weather is likely to be inclement, find a different location or go out on a different day. The days leading up to the peak are usually better than the days after, it adds. The meteors will also seem to originate from the constellation of Perseus, so if you use a stargazing app you can find the right location to look at.

NASA's Butch Wilmore retires from astronaut corps after spending 9 unexpected months in space
Astronaut Butch Wilmore is retiring from NASA less than five months after he returned from a troubled test mission that left him aboard the International Space Station far longer than expected, the space agency announced Wednesday. Wilmore, along with NASA astronaut Suni Williams, piloted the first crewed flight of Boeing's Starliner spacecraft last year. The mission gained worldwide attention when the spacecraft experience several serious issues en route to the space station, including thruster outages and gas leaks. Williams and Wilmore had been expected to stay about eight days in orbit. But NASA and Boeing spent weeks attempting to pinpoint what went wrong with their vehicle and assessing whether Starliner was safe to carry the astronauts home. The space agency ultimately decided returning the duo to Earth aboard Starliner was too risky a proposition. NASA announced last August that Williams and Wilmore would join the next International Space Station crew rotation along with two other astronauts on SpaceX's Crew-9 mission and remain aboard the orbiting laboratory for several additional months. Williams and Wilmore ultimately returned home in March — more than nine months after they left Earth. Such a duration of stay in orbit is not uncommon, as astronauts routinely live on the space station for six months or longer when they serve on staff rotation missions. Both astronauts have maintained the position that they were fully prepared for their extended stay in space, saying they each understood the risks and uncertainty associated with test flying a spacecraft for the first time. Williams and Wilmore also repeatedly sought to quash narratives that they were 'abandoned,' 'stuck' or 'stranded' in space. 'That's been the narrative from day one: stranded, abandoned, stuck — and I get it, we both get it,' Wilmore told CNN's Anderson Cooper in February. 'Help us change the narrative, let's change it to: prepared and committed despite what you've been hearing. That's what we prefer.' Wilmore's 'commitment to NASA's mission and dedication to human space exploration is truly exemplary,' said Steve Koerner, the acting head of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, where astronauts train, in a statement Wednesday. 'His lasting legacy of fortitude,' Koerner added, 'will continue to impact and inspire the Johnson workforce, future explorers, and the nation for generations.' Wilmore's departure from NASA follows the example set by Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley, the two astronauts who piloted the first crewed test flight of SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule in 2020. That mission marked the last for both Behken and Hurley, who have each since retired. Wilmore, a Naval officer and test pilot who served in 21 combat missions, joined NASA's astronaut corps in 2000. He flew on three missions during his 25 years of service, including a mission on the space shuttle Atlantis and a trip to the space station on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. Notably, upon his return to Earth on a SpaceX capsule in March, Wilmore said that he would theoretically fly aboard one of Boeing's Starliner capsules again if given the opportunity. 'We're going to rectify all the issues that we encountered. We're going to fix them, we're going to make it work,' Wilmore said during a March 31 news conference.
