AST Blog: Sunday Night Storm Risk

Yahoo7 hours ago

A cluster of strong to severe storms is expected to develop across Texas and Oklahoma Sunday evening and push into southwestern Arkansas late Sunday night into early Monday morning. This is known as a Mesoscale Convective System (MCS), which basically is a large group of storms that can produce damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and localized flooding. While the storms should weaken as they move east, areas across central Arkansas could still see lightning and pockets of heavy rain early Monday.

High Surf Advisory for south shores

HONOLULU (KHON2) – A stable, light to moderate trade wind flow will continue through Sunday. The trades will remain down from the past few days as the pressure gradient south of broad North Pacific surface high pressure stays relaxed due to a front far north of Hawaii. Aside from areas of thin high clouds, an upper-level trough parked over the region will have little effect. Diffuse bands of moisture moving along the trade wind flow will focus modest rainfall along windward slopes, and a band passing through late tonight and Sunday will mainly affect Kauai and Oahu. Aside from afternoon showers on the Big Island and Kauai, leeward areas should remain rather dry. Subtle changes are expected Monday and Tuesday. The above mentioned upper-level trough will deepen west of the state and induce a surface trough several hundred miles northwest of Kauai. The current south southwest (200 degree) swell will bring large breaking surf to all south facing shores through the day Sunday, then gradually decline early next week. A High Surf Advisory is in effect for south facing shores through 6 PM HST Sunday. No other significant south swell sources expected through the remainder of next week. Warmup on the way, with a few southern storms in the mix

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Happy Sunday, Utah! Summer vibes are settling in across Utah as high pressure builds in, continuing a warming trend that's set to carry us through early in the week. Daytime highs are on the rise, expect upper 80s to low 90s across most valleys, and close to 100° down in St. George this afternoon. We're still hanging onto just enough leftover moisture to spark a few isolated afternoon showers and storms, especially across southern Utah. These will be hit-or-miss and mostly short-lived, fading quickly once the sun goes down. Monday looks similar, though a weak disturbance could bring gusty outflow winds with any southern mountain storms. Looking ahead to midweek, moisture starts to creep back in thanks to a passing weather system. Storm chances pick up a bit across the higher terrain on Tuesday, and northern Utah could see a slight chance on Wednesday as that system brushes by. It's not looking like much for the valleys at this point, mainly cloudy cover and a slight chance of an isolated storm. By the end of the week, another disturbance could stir up more activity, but the details are still hazy. One thing's for sure… the heat is on, and we're heading into a stretch where fire weather could become a concern, especially in southwest Utah as winds ramp up throughout the week. Stay tuned.
