Things to do in Metro Vancouver on the last weekend of June
The last weekend of June is a little less jam-packed with events than previous ones this month, with many upcoming summer festivals happening on Canada Day, rather than Saturday or Sunday. Still, there's plenty to do in Metro Vancouver before the country celebrates its 158th birthday on Tuesday. Here are some options. New Science World exhibit Science World's new exhibit "Artemis Space Adventure with LEGO Bricks" opened to the public this week. Featuring 'larger-than-life LEGO sculptures, hands-on engineering challenges, and collaborative workshop stations designed to ignite creativity,' the exhibition draws its inspiration from NASA's Artemis program, which aims to send humans to the moon for the first time since 1972. The exhibit will be at Science World through April 6, 2026, so visitors who don't make it on opening weekend will have plenty of time to check it out. Theatre Under the Stars This weekend also marks the start of a new season of Theatre Under the Stars, with preview performances of this year's productions of Roald Dahl's 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'Legally Blonde' scheduled for Friday through Monday. Opening night will be July 2 for the former and July 3 for the latter. The annual run of live, outdoor theatre in Stanley Park's Malkin Bowl will continue through Aug. 16. A full schedule and ticket information is available on the TUTS website. Surrey Pride 2025 The 26th Annual Surrey Pride Festival will be held Saturday in the city's Civic Plaza from noon to 7 p.m. Started in the late 1990s as a response to efforts to ban books in the Surrey School District, the event has grown into an annual celebration featuring dozens of vendors and live performances. A performance schedule can be found on the Surrey Pride website. Pollinator Picnic at UBC UBC Farm is hosting several special activities during its weekly farmer's market this Saturday, all to celebrate the pollinators that make the food system possible. Among the free events scheduled are tours of the farm and various pollinator-related projects currently in progress there, as well as graduate student talks and kids' colouring activities. There will also be tea tastings and a 'meet n' treat' with bunnies from Rabbitats rabbit rescue by donation. The 'Pollinator Picnic' runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More information can be found on the UBC Farm website. Portobello West Summer Market Portobello West will host the first of two summer markets at VanDusen Botanical Garden's Floral Hall on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Featuring '39 local B.C. makers of family fashion, jewelry, art, home decor, skincare, gourmet treats, wine and spirits, and more,' the market is free to enter. Organizers will hold a second summer market at VanDusen on Aug. 16.

Construction gets underway on planned Woodbine GO Station
An artist's rendering of the future Woodbine GO Station is pictured. (Handout) Work is finally getting underway on the long-promised Woodbine GO Station in Etobicoke. Premier Doug Ford said Thursday that construction is officially kicking off on the station, which was announced by the province back in 2019. 'This station will be a key part of our plan to provide two-way all-day GO service, and will connect travellers on the Kitchener Line to Pearson Airport and the UP Express to local transit and, of course, the Woodbine Racetrack,' Ford said. While the original target for the station to open was 2023, Ford said it's taken six years to get started on construction because the province had to conduct environmental assessments and consult with the community. Woodbine Entertainment will be contributing $170 million to support the construction of the new station, Ford said. The province did not list the total cost. 'This is going to be a game changer for North Etobicoke and for the people who rely on the Kitchener Line every day, with better connections, improved services and new jobs and growth in the community,' Ford said. The new station will replace the nearby Etobicoke North GO Station, which the province says is unable to accommodate future growth. The next stage of work will include deep sewer and underground utility works, realigning Entrance Road and preparing for a future track diversion to accommodate the platform at Woodbine Station. When complete, Woodbine Station will be accessible and will include dedicated parking, a passenger pick-up and drop-off area, a bus loop and a passenger waiting area. It will connect with the Union Pearson Express (UP Express), Kitchener GO train and local bus services from the TTC, MiWay, York Regional Transit and Brampton Transit. Mayor Olivia Chow said the new station will help create a 'complete neighbourhood,' with hundreds of new homes. 'Now with Woodbine GO Station as an anchor, a transit-oriented community with thousands of new homes will spring up,' Chow said. 'It will be a complete neighborhood with new homes, parks, shops, libraries and community gathering spaces.' She said it will also support thousands of construction jobs. Metrolinx says it expects the new station to serve approximately 7,000 daily riders by 2041. The province did not respond to an email asking for a completion date and total cost for the station.

Canada Day events planned for Winnipeg and throughout the province Tuesday
Social Sharing As Canadians gear up for the country's 158th birthday on Tuesday, multiple events and activities are planned in Winnipeg and elsewhere in the province for those who want to get out and celebrate Canada Day. The Forks The Forks in Winnipeg is offering a full day of Canada Day activities on Tuesday, beginning at 9 a.m. and running until 6 p.m., including a basketball tournament, skateboarding demonstrations and dance battles. The Forks will not be doing a fireworks show this year for Canada Day, but activities will also include food trucks, live music and an Indigenous youth empowerment panel. Assiniboine Park The Assiniboine Park Conservancy will host a day of family-friendly Canada Day events and activities on Tuesday, which will include bouncy castles and face painting for kids on Lyric Field, musical performances at the Lyric Stage, and salsa and bachata sessions at The Leaf. The park will also host a citizenship ceremony at 11:30 a.m., where 30 new Canadians are expected to take their oath of citizenship and officially become Canadian citizens. Princess Auto Stadium The home of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will host a Canada Day celebration Tuesday that will include a tailgating area from noon to 5 p.m., with hoop dancers, Mariachi music and face painting. The tailgate will be followed by musical performances on a mainstage by Big Wreck and Jade Turner, and the night will conclude with a fireworks show expected to start at 10:30 p.m. Assiniboia Downs The race track on the western edge of Winnipeg will host its own Canada Day celebration on Tuesday evening. Live racing will start at 7:30 p.m., followed by what the Downs is calling a "spectacular" fireworks display. After the fireworks wrap up, guests are invited to stay for an evening of "music and celebration." Canadian Museum for Human Rights The Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg will be open and offer free admission on Tuesday to mark Canada Day. The museum says all are welcome to explore its galleries and learn stories about human rights and how they have evolved in Canada. City of Selkirk The city north of Winnipeg will host its annual Canada Day celebration on Tuesday at the Selkirk Waterfront from 4 p.m. until midnight. Planned activities include live entertainment, a market, food vendors and what the city is calling "the best fireworks display in the Interlake." The city did caution, however, that the fireworks could be cancelled depending on how prone the area is to fire in the coming days. A final call will be made with advice from the fire department before Canada Day. City of Brandon The western Manitoba city will host its Canada Day celebration on Tuesday at the Riverbank Discovery Centre from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. The event will include live musical performances, a kids' zone, with a sandpit and bouncy castles, and a market.
