Sudan's RSF names PM, presidential council in rival govt - War in Sudan

Al-Ahram Weekly27-07-2025
A coalition led by Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Saturday named a civilian prime minister and unveiled a presidential council to lead a rival government, challenging the military-backed administration and risking a further push toward the war-torn country's division.
The announcement, made during a press conference broadcast from the RSF-controlled city of Nyala in South Darfur, comes more than two years into the war between the RSF and the army.
The RSF appointed Mohamed Hassan al-Ta'ayshi -- a former member of Sudan's transitional sovereign council from 2019 until the 2021 military coup -- as prime minister of what it calls the "government of peace and unity".
Sudan is split, with the army controlling the north, east and centre, having recently retaken the capital Khartoum, while the RSF holds most of Darfur and parts of Kordofan, where recent attacks have killed hundreds, according to local rights groups.
The internationally-recognised army-aligned government, formed in May and headed by former UN official Kamil Idris, remains incomplete, with three cabinet positions still unfilled.
United Nations officials have warned the RSF's formation of a parallel government -- now with both a prime minister and a presidential council -- could deepen Sudan's fragmentation and complicate diplomatic efforts to end the conflict that began in April 2023.
An RSF member told AFP on condition of anonymity that al-Ta'ayshi will now begin forming a cabinet.
On Saturday, the RSF-led coalition also unveiled a 15-member presidential council, with RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo as president and rebel leader Abdelaziz al-Hilu -- who controls parts of southern Sudan -- as vice president.
The council also includes political figures, ex-officials and newly appointed regional governors.
Among the appointees is El-Hadi Idris, named governor of Darfur -- a region that now has two rival governors, one appointed by the RSF and the other, Minni Arko Minawi, aligned with the army.
Minawi dismissed the RSF's move, saying it "appears to be sharing responsibility for the crimes and violations they committed equally with their allies."
Saturday's appointments follow a political charter signed in February between the RSF and its allied armed and civilian groups during talks in Nairobi.
There was no immediate response from the army on the RSF's announcement.
The war began after a power struggle between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Dagalo -- once allies who ousted Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
Two years later, the pair led a coup that derailed Sudan's transition to civilian rule.
The United Nations repeatedly said that Sudan now faces one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
In addition to the tens of thousands killed, millions have fled their homes and basic services -- from healthcare to water -- have collapsed across much of the country.

Egypt's 11th aid convoy dispatched to Gaza with fuel

Egypt's 11th aid convoy for Gaza left the Rafah crossing on Saturday, led by three diesel tankers — bringing the total fuel deliveries to five trucks in a week — amid Israel's deadly five-month blockade of the besieged strip and its ongoing 22-month-long genocidal war. Last Sunday, two fuel trucks joined the sixth convoy, signalling what could become a weekly fuel corridor. Live coverage from the Rafah border crossing showed the convoy carrying more than 3,000 tonnes of food, medical supplies, personal care items, infant formula, and tens of thousands of loaves of bread, prepared by the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC). The Egyptian aid trucks head to the Israeli-controlled Karm Abu Salem crossing—open from 8am to 5pm—where ERC officials say trucks face hours-long inspections despite earlier agreements on procedures, before being unloaded to the Palestinian Red Crescent and United Nations (UN) agencies for distribution. Over 5,000 aid trucks remain queued on the Egyptian side, awaiting entry into Gaza as part of Cairo's effort to counter the total ban on food, water, fuel, and medicine imposed since 2 March. On Wednesday, ERC executive director Amal Imam said Egypt had sent 36,000 trucks carrying over 500,000 tonnes of aid since the war began—70 percent humanitarian supplies and 30 percent relief and medical goods. The Israeli blockade has pushed much of Gaza's 2.3 million population into famine, killing 212 Palestinians, half of them children. Alongside land convoys, Egyptian Armed Forces Spokesman, Brigadier General Gharib Abdel Hafez, said the military had airdropped food into hard-to-reach areas of Gaza using 12 transport aircraft. On Tuesday, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi called the conflict 'a war of starvation and genocide,' demanding an immediate ceasefire and the unrestricted entry of life-saving humanitarian aid, and rejecting accusations that Egypt was blocking supplies. In May, Israel backed a US-registered Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), opening four distribution centres near which occupation forces killed over 1,500 starving, aid-seeking Palestinians, according to the Palestinian health ministry. The GHF was condemned by Egypt, other global and regional powers, and dozens of international aid agencies as a "mechanism of death." Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Israeli plan to occupy Gaza aims to erase Palestine: Al-Azhar - Foreign Affairs

Al-Azhar has condemned Israel's decision to seize the Gaza Strip and take complete control of Palestinian territory, calling it a blatant attempt to 'erase Palestine from existence, erase its identity from the world map, and swallow what remains of its land through force and terrorism.' In a statement on Saturday, the Islamic world's most influential Sunni institution said the move was 'a permanent stain' on the conscience of international bodies that had failed to confront such crimes. It urged an end to 'policies of arrogance and violence' that ignore people's rights, defy international law and United Nations (UN) resolutions, and commit further massacres and violations against Palestinians. Al-Azhar called for unified Arab, Islamic, and international efforts, and intensified political, diplomatic and legal pressure to end what it described as a 'major historical tragedy.' It warned the occupation was seeking to drag the region into chaos and collapse, and stressed the need to firmly resist such actions, which it called 'unprecedented in human history.' On Friday, Egypt also condemned the Israeli cabinet's plan, saying it aimed to entrench the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories, prolong the 'war of extermination' in Gaza, destroy all means of life for Palestinians and 'liquidate the Palestinian cause.'
