Police shoot allegedly armed man during mental-health crisis in Echo Park
Just before 4 p.m., Hector Alaniz's mother called police to 'report that her son was suffering from mental illness and may be a danger to others,' police said in a news release.
When officers arrived to the 2400 block of Bellevue Avenue, they found Alaniz and told him to surrender, though he 'instead fled the location, leading officers on a short foot pursuit eastbound Bellevue Avenue from Coronado Street,' police said.
Officers saw that he had what appeared to be a black pistol, and as he entered a driveway, he pointed the gun at officers, prompting the use of a 40 mm less-lethal launcher and at least one officer to open fire, police said.
'Despite the suspect being struck by both gunfire and 40mm [less-lethal] projectiles, he again continued to flee until an officer discharged a TASER, incapacitating Alaniz, allowing officers to take him into custody without further incident,' police said.
Alaniz was treated at a local hospital for a gunshot wound to his right arm, and police say they located a black airsoft gun that looks like a Glock pistol at the scene.

Lil Nas X Hospitalized And Arrested After Police Confrontation
After showing bizarre behavior on a busy LA street and allegedly charging at police officers, 'Old Town Road' rapper-singer Lil Nas X was hospitalized and then booked into a Los Angeles County jail on Thursday morning. The Los Angeles Police Department said they were responding to a call about an unclothed man walking in Ventura Boulevard in Studio City when Lil Nas X, whose given name is Montero Lamar Hill, charged at officers who arrived at the scene. Related: 'This morning, around 5:50 am, officers responded to the 11000 block of Ventura Bl for a nude man walking in the street. Upon arrival, the suspect charged at officers and was taken into custody. He was transported to a local hospital for a possible overdose and placed under arrest for battery on a Police Officer,' the LAPD said in a statement to HuffPost. A law enforcement source claimed that Hill punched an officer twice in the face, NBC News reported. As of Thursday afternoon, Hill was in custody at the Valley Jail in Van Nuys, according to online booking records. Related: TMZ published video footage of Hill captured by an onlooker appearing to follow him before his hospitalization and arrest. The footage shows Hill strutting and posing in the middle of Ventura Boulevard in cowboy boots and underwear. He is also heard singing and repeatedly inviting the person recording to a party. Related: The incident comes after he wiped his Instagram and made a series of seemingly random posts. Related: Lil Nas X took the world by storm with his country rap song 'Old Town Road' in 2019. The artist also stirred controversy with his 2021 song 'MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name).' In a provocative music video for the song, Hill slides down a pole to hell and gives the devil a lap dance, angering conservatives and homophobes. Hill spoke to Variety in 2020 about the struggles he faced during his rise to fame as a young adult. 'So much happened during my rise. You know, drugs and murders,' Hill said. 'And my grandmother passing (in 2018)— she was the first person close to me who died. It was devastating. And it made me a hypochondriac: I'd wake up, heart racing. It was scary.' He also said he would self-medicate by 'smoking [weed] heavily.' 'But then I started feeling more connected with the universe, and taking everything as a sign,' he added. Hill also noted: 'The biggest surprise of becoming globally famous? On the outside, everybody loves you — but on the inside, everything [feels] the same.' HuffPost reached out to Hill's legal representatives, but they declined to comment. Related... Pekin man sentenced to 10 years for soliciting minor online
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A federal judge in Peoria handed down a 10-year prison term for a Pekin man accused of attempting to entice a minor for sexual purposes. In addition, Joseph D. Perkins, 32, was also ordered by U.S. District Judge Michael Mihm to register as a sex offender. Mihm also imposed a seven-year term of supervised release, the federal version of probation, when Perkins finishes his prison term. Perkins was found guilty at an April 2025 jury trial where prosecutors presented evidence that from January 2023 to March 2024, he engaged in online chats with a person he thought was a 14-year-old girl. In reality, it was an undercover officer. During that time frame, he repeatedly asked the 'girl' for nude photos and tried to meet up her with to engage in sexual activity. When they finally agreed to meet in March 2204, he was arrested by federal agents. He has been in custody of the U.S. marshals ever since. Under federal sentencing rules, Perkins must serve at least 85% of his prison term. The 10-year sentence is the minimum for the charge of attempted enticement of a minor.
