‘It's a disgrace': Ricky Stuart blows up over Kyle Flanagan situation

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has launched a passionate defence of Dragons playmaker Kyle Flanagan after he was booed by the Canberra faithful during his side's 28-24 win.

Raiders fans booed Flanagan as he lined up a conversion in the first half, but dad Shane was caught off-guard when questioned about it post match.
'Never heard it. What would the crowd be booing Kyle for?' Flanagan asked.
'Just kicking the conversion early in the game, they were quite passionate,' the journalist replied.
'I think they do that, so good on them, it's going to happen everywhere,' Flanagan said.
However, Stuart was fuming at the journalist over the question.
'Probably a poor question too when you ask Shane about his son,' Stuart said.
'I think it is a disgrace how you guys in the media are just absolutely bashing the kid publicly.
'And that question there about the booing, like honestly, I have got a son playing and that's my biggest fear, you people.
'Not him, but the media. The way he is being portrayed in the media at the moment that poor kid.
'I went up to him after the game and took him aside and spoke to him. I've known him since he has been a little boy.
'He was the leader tonight. He led the charge in terms of them getting back into that game.
'I think it is a disgrace that his so-called Dragons supporters, the social media and the bulls*** that he has to listen to and cop.
'It is something I just don't like. He is a better football player than he is being given credit for.
'The way that boy has handled that from a mental point of view to be able to turn up every week and he said, I'm tough enough I'll handle it.
'I know he is, but it's awful. He led the charge for them tonight and they nearly came back on the back of him to winning that game.'
Stuart accused the media of playing games with Flanagan.
'It becomes a game with the media reporting what social media says,' Stuart said.
'You have got to actually look at some of these people involved. It would be torture for his mother.
'I know his old man will handle it, but it would be torture for his mother. Can you imagine if it was one of yours. That's when it becomes real.'
Stuart echoed Flanagan's sentiments on the fans booing.
'Were they all Raiders fans were they?' Stuart said.
'They always boo goal kickers. How many games do you go to? I want them to boo their goal kicker. They can throw cans at him for all I care. I want them to boo a bloody goal kicker. That's their job.'
Braith Anasta blasted the question as an attempt from a reporter to get a reaction.
'Whoever asked that question, it is one of the stupidest questions I have ever heard,' Anasta said.
'They either know nothing about rugby league or they are just trying to incite a reaction.
'To ask a question about him being booed kicking a goal. Every player gets booed kicking a goal and this reporter has just singled Kyle out because he is in the media at the moment and has pressure on him and there is speculation about his position.
'It is really unprofessional from the reporter who asked that.'
Cooper Cronk agreed with Stuart that social media trolls don't deserve airtime.
'I agree with what Ricky said, about giving air time to people whose opinion don't really matter a hell of a lot,' Cronk said.
'You don't listen to people you don't talk to. I agree with what Ricky said. It was the right thing.
'But at the end of the day, people who love our game the fans, like I have been booed at every stadium I have gone to.'
Adam Reynolds believes it is harder for people close to players than the players sometimes.
'It is tougher on the external people around you,' Reynolds said.
'Like they said, his mother and sisters, they are the ones that have to deal with it on a daily basis as well.
'It is not just Kyle and the players who are getting targeted. It is the families.
'Social media is so out there these days that it is so easy to get access to players. It can come across a bit offensive at times, but if you read it and listen to it then you are in the wrong sport.'
Mal Meninga called for government action against social media abuse.
'I am not on social media for that very reason,' Meninga said.
'The question was stupid and good on Shane and Ricky for protecting young Kyle.
'I get frustrated because I am in the twilight of my life and players have to put up with that sort of crap and then it is the ripple effect.
'It is not just the individual it is everybody that knows him. The family and its stupid.
'They get away with anonymity of it all and not actually disclosing their names. I don't understand how they can do that. How they can come out and criticise people when their name is not to it.
'It is getting to a stage where the government has to do something about it.'

‘Difficult to take': Tigers CEO slams ‘crap' reports, praises Benji for taking on ‘unenviable task'

Wests Tigers CEO Shane Richardson believes the team's upset win over the Roosters was a 'statement' by the players in response to 'crap' reports about their coach Benji Marshall. Richardson also admitted that the exit of Lachlan Galvin 'hurt' both him and Marshall, and he explained the reasons behind letting young gun Tallyn Da Silva leave early. The Tigers ended a six-game losing streak on Sunday without three of their most important players in Jarome Luai, Api Koroisau and Jahream Bula. The 30-28 win came after another week of headlines surrounding the Tigers, including a story that alleged Adam Doueihi got into a fiery exchange with Marshall at training. There were also claims that Richardson wanted to bring in former Dragons coach Paul McGregor as an assistant, but Marshall didn't allow it. Marshall hit back at the reports in his post-game press conference and on Monday night Richardson backed his coach up while appearing on NRL 360. 'I just think the players stood up and said to the world that this crap about Benji is crap. You don't play like that with all the players we had out yesterday without having a real commitment to the coach,' he said. 'The articles written earlier in the week, I understand journalism, clickbait and all the rest of it but agenda-driven journalism is not true. 'The lies that were written in that article were very difficult for Benji to take. 'The players particularly knew it wasn't true, Adam Doueihi knew it wasn't true. I've never even met Paul McGregor so how I was even going to get him as a coach I don't know. 'At the end of the day, it was a statement by the players and how they feel about Benji.' The Tigers have claimed three-straight wooden spoons — two of which have been under Marshall — but Richardson believes the 2005 premiership-winner is trading in the right direction. He also praised Marshall for showing the courage to take on the 'unenviable task' of turning the Tigers around. 'Everybody in the press was bagging the Tigers for the last three or four years (saying) 'how terrible they were' and 'they weren't getting any better',' Richardson said. 'He's taken on the job that not many people would've ever taken on. He's taken it on without coaching before and he took it on because in a lot of ways they gave him the blaze of it because he tried to give them some face in the marketplace. 'Then all of a sudden the Tim Sheens stuff happened and he inherited the side. He inherited a tough roster, which I believe there was only 22 of the 36 players could play NRL. So he had no depth work with, we ran last in reserve grade. 'He's taken on that challenge and worked forward. This year we've gone in with the changes we can make and he's got better and better. 'He will be the first to say he was stunned when he went in there but he learns every day. You can't learn if you don't want to learn, you can't learn if you're not intelligent. 'He's intelligent and he's there for one reason and one reason only. I can assure it's not about the money, it's about the want to make Wests Tigers successful again. 'He's taken on an unenviable task and I think he's done a great job.' The Tigers' roster management has been criticised of late following the exits of Galvin and most recently Tallyn Da Silva. Galvin was a week-in, week-out starter but wanted out of the Tigers and made the move to the Bulldogs around a month ago. Da Silva hasn't been able to nail down his role in the 17 and agitated once the club indicated they were going to re-sign co-captain and star hooker Api Koroisau. That's why Richardson said their situations were 'very different.' 'Lachie just didn't want to be there,' he explained. 'He told us up front that he didn't want to be there and didn't want to be involved with Benji as a coach and he wanted to move on. 'He had to make a decision and then we had to make a decision after that. 'It hurt Benji and it hurt me too because I never want to lose a junior and I watched the tapes before I went there and I could see what a player he was and that we could build the club around him. 'And we did, we named him straight away at five-eighth in the first grade side — no one had ever heard of him. 'He's got a way of looking at things... I hope he's successful and I think he will be successful, he's a good player. We had to make a call on what was best for the club and the squad... we had to move on. 'The other one was different. It was a young kid who had made it clear to us that he wanted to be there. I went and saw his parents two weeks before this happened and they said 'if Api signs we want him to be able to move on'.' Richardson then explained that when he approached the Knights about getting Kai Pearce-Paul to the club early they suggested a player swap involving Tallyn Da Silva for the rest of this year. However the Knights then decided they wanted to sign Da Silva longer-term, so the Tigers decided to let him go to market immediately. The Eels ended up winning the race for Da Silva though and the 20-year-old made a mid-season move. Koroisau is yet to put pen to paper on the new deal that will lock him in beyond 2026, however Richardson revealed the club 'accelerated the process' a fortnight ago and it's close to being signed. 'We've chosen his loyalty and leadership,' he said when explaining why the Tigers are investing in the 32-year-old. 'We don't have a lot of senior leadership and we felt that going forward that Api has done the right thing for the club. And more importantly he's still an outstanding player.'

Cricket divided as South African declares before Brian Lara record

The cricket world has been left divided over South African captain Wiaan Mulder's decision to stand himself down from the opportunity to chase Brian Lara's most iconic record. Mulder said respect for Lara convinced him to declare 33 runs short of the West Indies icon's world Test record of 400 runs as South Africa blew Zimbabwe off the park at Queens Sports Club on Monday night. West Indies vs Australia Test & T20I Series | Watch every ball LIVE with ESPN, available on Kayo Sports | New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer. Mulder hammered an unbeaten 367 — a South African record and the fifth highest score in Test cricket — before declaring at lunch on the second day of the second Test. Only Lara, Matthew Hayden (380 vs Zimbabwe in 2003), Lara again (375 vs England in 1994) and Mahela Jayawardene (374 vs South Africa in 2006) have scored more runs in an innings. South Africa's total of 626 for five proved way beyond Zimbabwe's reach. They were bowled out for 170 and were 51 for one in their second innings after being forced to follow on. 'Brian Lara is a legend. He got 401 or whatever it was against England. For someone of that stature to keep the record is pretty special,' Mulder said at the end of the day's play. 'I think if I get the chance again I would do the same again.' Mulder spoke to South African coach Shukri Conrad who agreed with his decision. 'He said to me as well, let the legend keep the record. I never know what my fate will be but letting Brian Lara keep the record is the way it should be.' Cricket commentators have been left divided with some suggesting it was disrespectful not to chase the milestone. Many, however, have compared it with Aussie legend Mark Taylor declaring when he was 334 not out against Pakistan in 1998. The score equalled Sir Donald Bradman's record test innings score. South African legend Dale Steyn wrote on X Mulder 'deserved' to reach 400. Leading cricketer journalist for The Sun John Etheridge wrote on X: 'So he declared at lunch with 367 not out. That's impressively selfless'. One popular cricket fan profile on X posted: 'Massive respect to captain Wiaan Mulder. 'Not many would have done this in Cricket.' Cricket statistician Mohandras Menon posted: 'Wiaan Mulder has done a Mark Taylor. 'He has declared the South African innings, and he is just 33 runs short of Brian Lara's 400! Selfless act.' Other commentators, however, said the declaration was disrespectful. The potential score of 400 would have also caused plenty of debate because the score was achieved against a struggling Zimbabwean team. Hayden is the only other batsman to reach 300 against Zimbabwe. One popular cricket fan wrote on X: 'Jesus, imagine a 100m sprinter at the Olympics slowing down when about to break the WR record because 'Usain Bolt is a legend'. 'Such a ridiculous reason to not pursue the 400. Mulder took two wickets and held a catch at slip as Zimbabwe crumbled in reply. Sean Williams, who was only allowed to bat after five wickets had fallen because of time spent off the field because of illness, slammed 83 not out off 55 balls in Zimbabwe's only innings of substance. Resuming on 264 not out, Mulder became the second South African triple centurion, reaching the mark off 297 balls — the second-fastest behind India's Virender Sehwag, who took 278 deliveries against South Africa in Chennai in 2007/08. Mulder went past the previous highest South African individual score of 311 not out by Hashim Amla against England at The Oval in London in 2012 with successive boundaries off fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani. Mulder faced 334 balls and hit 49 fours and four sixes off an increasingly dispirited and largely toothless Zimbabwe bowling attack. 'I've never even dreamed of getting a double hundred, let alone a triple hundred,' said Mulder. 'When I started playing for South Africa I was nowhere near good enough but it gave me the opportunity to learn from great players.' Mulder said playing English county cricket for Leicestershire as well as batting in domestic cricket on the notoriously tricky Wanderers pitch in Johannesburg had helped him hone his game. 'Going to England gave me a chance to understand what kind of batter I wanted to be and to figure out some technical things.' He also said current Zimbabwe coach Justin Sammons had played a big role while he was coaching in South Africa, particularly in playing the short ball. Like former England captain Mike Brearley, Mulder said he sung to himself between balls, 'keeping myself natural, keeping myself present.' Whereas Brearley hummed classical music, Mulder said Afrikaans music helped him reach his first Test century in Bangladesh last year, while in Bulawayo he opted for Zombie by the Cranberries. Zombie was sung by Irish rugby supporters at the 2023 Rugby World Cup and adapted by South African rugby fans after the Springboks won the World Cup in a homage to coach Rassie Erasmus and was used for Conrad at the World Test Championship final won by South Africa against Australia last month.
