Microsoft Thwarts US$4 Billion In Fraud Attempts As AI-Driven Scams Surge

BusinessToday21-04-2025

Microsoft said it blocked nearly US$4 billion in fraud attempts between April 2024 and April 2025, highlighting the scale and sophistication of cybercrime threats amid a global rise in AI-powered scams.
According to the latest Cyber Signals report, Microsoft rejected 49,000 fraudulent partner enrolments and prevented approximately 1.6 million bot sign-up attempts per hour, as AI tools continue to lower the barrier for cybercriminals.
Generative AI tools are now used to craft convincing fake websites, job scams, and phishing campaigns with deepfakes and cloned voices. Microsoft observed a growing trend of AI-assisted scams originating from regions like China and Germany, where digital marketplaces are most active.
Threat actors are now able to build fraudulent e-commerce websites and customer service bots in minutes, leveraging AI-generated content to mislead consumers into trusting fake storefronts and reviews. These deceptive practices have become increasingly difficult to detect.
Microsoft's multi-layered response includes domain impersonation protection, scareware blockers, typo protection, and fake job detection systems across Microsoft Edge, LinkedIn, and other platforms.
Windows Quick Assist has also been enhanced with in-product warnings and fraud detection. The tool now blocks over 4,400 suspicious connection attempts daily, thanks to Digital Fingerprinting and AI-driven risk signals.
Scammers continue to exploit job seekers by generating fake listings, AI-written interviews, and phishing campaigns. Microsoft recommends job platforms enforce multifactor authentication and monitor deepfake-generated interviews to mitigate risks.
Meanwhile, groups like Storm-1811 have impersonated IT support via Windows Quick Assist, gaining unauthorised device access without using AI. Microsoft has since strengthened safeguards and suspended accounts linked to such abuse.
As part of its Secure Future Initiative, Microsoft introduced a new policy in January 2025 requiring all product teams to perform fraud risk assessments during the design phase. The goal is to embed security measures directly into the architecture of products and services.
Corporate Vice-President of Anti-Fraud and Product Abuse, Kelly Bissell, said Microsoft's defence strategy relies not only on technology but also public education and industry collaboration. Microsoft is working closely with global enforcement agencies through the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA) to dismantle criminal infrastructures.
'Cybercrime is a trillion-dollar problem. AI gives us the ability to respond faster, but it also requires all of us—tech firms, regulators, and users—to work together,' said Bissell.
To stay protected, consumers are advised to: Verify job listings and company legitimacy.
Avoid unsolicited offers via text or personal emails.
Be wary of websites offering 'too good to be true' deals.
Use browsers with fraud protection and never share personal or financial information with unverified sources. Related

CIMB: India's duty cut, low stocks seen boosting Malaysian palm oil exports

KUALA LUMPUR: India's recent decision to reduce import duties for palm oil, coupled with low edible oil stocks in the country, is likely to boost Malaysian palm oil exports in May. CIMB Securities Research said the recent correction in the crude palm oil (CPO) price has improved palm price competitiveness against soybean oil. "Palm oil currently trades at a discount of US$128 per tonne against soybean oil. "This, coupled with India's recent decision to halve the import duties on palm oil to 10 per cent with effect from 30 May, will lower the effective duty on palm oil to 16.5 per cent," it said in a note. The firm said this competitive pricing, combined with current low domestic stocks in India, is expected to lead to increased Indian palm oil purchases. Separately, CIMB Securities said the Indonesian government raised the export levy on crude palm oil to 10 per cent, effective from May 17, to raise revenue to fund its biodiesel programme and subsidise replanting. "Following the change, we expect Indonesian palm oil exports to resume in favour of refined palm products. "We project CPO prices to remain within the RM3,700–4,100 per tonne range in June, given rising exports. "Our average CPO price forecast of RM4,200 per tonne for 2025 remains unchanged," it said. Meanwhile, CIMB Securities said Malaysian palm oil stocks are expected to rise one per cent month on month (MoM) to 2 million tonnes in June 2025. The firm said Malaysian palm oil stocks rose seven per cent MoM to 1.99 million tonnes in May 2025, below its estimates but in line with consensus estimates. "The CPO production is projected to be flat owing to fewer working days, while palm oil exports are expected to increase by eight per cent MoM to 1.5 million tonnes," it said. Overall, CIMB Securities has maintained its Neutral rating on the sector, as it expects CPO prices to remain range-bound. "Our preferred pick is IOI Corp Bhd given its lower exposure to Indonesian regulatory risks, its relatively attractive valuations and the positive impact of a stronger ringgit on its US dollar debt obligations. "For investors seeking dividend yield and exposure to smaller-cap palm oil players, our preferred pick is Hap Seng Plantations Bhd owing to its undervalued assets," it added.

GM to invest US$4bil in three US facilities as it ramps up gas-powered vehicles

DETROIT/WASHINGTON: General Motors said on Tuesday it is planning to invest about US$4 billion over the next two years at three US facilities in Michigan, Kansas, and Tennessee as it moves to boost production of gas-powered vehicles amid slowing electric vehicle demand. The company said it will begin production of gas-powered full-size SUVs and light-duty pickup trucks at its Orion Assembly plant in Orion Township, Michigan, in early 2027. Orion Assembly was previously slated to build electric trucks starting next year. The move calls into question GM's plan to end the production of gas-powered cars and trucks by 2035. It was welcomed by the White House, which has imposed significant tariffs on imported vehicles to pressure automakers to move more production to the United States. In March, GM CEO Mary Barra met with US President Donald Trump to talk about investment plans and told the president GM needed relief from California emissions and federal fuel economy requirements in order to expand US production, sources told Reuters. Trump is set to sign legislation on Thursday to rescind California's 2035 zero-emission vehicle rules. "No president has taken a stronger interest in reviving America's once-great auto industry than President Trump, and GM's investment announcement builds on trillions of dollars in other historic investment commitments to Make in America," White House spokesman Kush Desai said. GM's Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas is set to start building the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt by the end of this year, and GM says it will now also build the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox starting in mid-2027. In a statement, the largest US automaker said it expects to make "new future investments in Fairfax for GM's next generation of affordable EVs." GM last month said it is also investing US$888 million at a New York propulsion plant to increase gas engine production. At its Spring Hill, Tennessee, plant, GM will add production of the gas-powered Chevy Blazer beginning in 2027. It will be built alongside the electric Cadillac Lyriq and Vistiq SUVs as well as the gas-powered Cadillac XT5. The gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox and Blazer are both currently produced in Mexico. The Equinox will continue to be built in Mexico once production starts at US facilities in order to supply markets outside of North America. Mexico's economy minister Marcelo Ebrard said in a social media post he talked with GM and said there is no expectation of any plant closure or layoffs at the automaker's Mexican plants. GM said it expects annual capital spending will be between US$10 billion and US$12 billion through 2027, reflecting increased US investment, prioritisation of key programmes, and efficiency offsets.
