Aira Azman claims first title of the year at Bermuda Open
PETALING JAYA: National squash player Aira Azman lived up to her top seed status by capturing her first title of the year at the Bermuda Open on Saturday (April 3).
It was a short affair for 20-year-old Aira to win the Copper-level event as she defeated second seed Hana Moataz of Egypt 12-10, 11-3, 11-6 in just 27 minutes in Devonshire.

"Our forwards are creating chances, but we need to take more when it comes to penalty corners - 50 percent conversion would help us a lot. Syed (Syed Mohd Syafiq Syed Cholan) is one of our top penalty corner takers. If he performs, I hope he can break into the top four," he said. "We have scored 16 goals, 11 from field and five from penalty corners. We have to do better when it comes to defending penalty corners. In South Korea, we conceded 25 penalty corners, letting in five. We've to stop that." Malaysia's first game in the Nations Cup will be against Pakistan at the National Hockey Stadium on June 15, and Sarjit knows Malaysia have not had the best of results against them in recent years. "We drew 4-4 in the last Nations Cup and lost 4-5 to them in the Azlan Shah Cup. They have quality players like Abdul Rana, Hannan Shahid, and penalty corner flicker Sufyan Khan. They have come back stronger. We have to check these players closely." Sarjit also highlighted that teams like New Zealand, France, and South Africa bring Pro League-level intensity to the competition. "These are quality sides, and the matches will be tough. But with coaches like Sohail (Abbas) helping our keepers and us studying the opponent flickers via video, we're preparing well." In the second-round match at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, the world No 8 player needed just 45 minutes to record a 12-10, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7 victory over India's Ahanat Singh. Awaiting Sivasangari in the third round is the tournament's seventh seed from Japan, Satomi Watanabe, who also advanced after defeating France's Melissa Alves 11-8, 11-5, 11-1. Earlier, Sivasangari became the sole Malaysian female representative still continuing the challenge in the tournament after Aira Azman and Noor Ainaa Amani Ampandi were eliminated early. National men's squash champion Ng Eain Yow also suffered a surprising defeat to an unseeded opponent in the second round earlier this morning.

PETALING JAYA: National top men's squash player Ng Eain Yow crashed out of the British Open in the second round after losing to France's Victor Crouin on Sunday (June 1). World No. 12 Eain Yow, who received a first-round bye, could not overcome world No. 14 Crouin, losing 11-13, 5-11, 7-11 in 58 minutes at the Diamond-level tournament.
