Yair Rodriguez speaks to MMA Junkie's Danny Segura following his win over Patricio "Pitbull" at UFC 314 in Miami.
MIAMI – Former UFC featherweight interim champion Yair Rodriguez acknowledges Alexander Volkanovski as the 145-pound GOAT, and can't wait to prove himself against the newly crowned champion.
Rodriguez (20-5 MMA, 11-4 UFC) took his first shot against Volkanovski (27-4 MMA, 14-3 UFC) at UFC 290 in a title unification bout. Although "El Pantera" came up short in that fight, he remains confident that his game has elevated to new heights since their first meeting in 2023.
Both men competed at UFC 314. On the main card, Rodriguez defeated a debuting Patricio Freire by unanimous decision, while Volkanovski won by the same method in the main event against Diego Lopes to reclaim the vacant featherweight title. Ahead of the fight, many wrote off Volkanovski, but he proved there's still plenty of tread left on the tires.
When asked if he thought Volkanovski's game has diminished, Rodriguez isn't quite sure. Instead, he offered plenty of praise as he angles for another title shot.
"I don't know if that's the case or not, but I also believe Volkanovski is one of the greatest of all time, and he has shown that," Rodriguez told MMA Junkie. "He has shown that for many years now, and I am happy to face this new Volkanovski, because he's also been doing some changes on his diet, you know? And I think he's motivated. He's having a fourth kid or something like that, which congratulations for that, and I can't wait to face him – this new version of himself."
After their first meeting, Rodriguez went on to rematch Brian Ortega in February 2024. It was another rough outing for Rodriguez, as he lost by submission in the third round, but after taking time off to reset, he rebounded nicely and is eager to get another crack at the title. It's a similar road Volkanovski traveled, having returned to the win column after dropping two straight, albeit in title fights.
If Rodriguez can leap past undefeated Movsar Evloev, he is confident he will face not only the greatest in the division's history, but also the best version of Volkanovski.
"I think he's the GOAT of 145 (pounds)," Rodriguez said. "As of this moment, of course. He's the titleholder and he was the titleholder for however many fights. I'll say this in an interview and I'll still say it: I think when he fought Ilia Topuria, he wasn't coming from his best moment. I think he has gained more confidence after this last fight, and I want to face that guy. I want to face the stronger Volkanovski because I'm also going to be the best version of myself."
Rodriguez earned his first shot at a piece of the 145-pound title by winning a first-round TKO over Ortega due to a shoulder injury. He went on to face and defeat Josh Emmett for the interim title, which was created when Volkanovski moved up to lightweight to challenge for a second title against Islam Makhachev.
The Mexican featherweight hopes the UFC will recognize the work he has put in over the years and his most recent performance as reasons to name him the next title challenger. For Rodriguez, it's not about showing others he can do it; it's more about validating his career journey.
"It would mean a lot," Rodriguez said. "I don't have to prove anything to nobody, you know? It's just like, not even to myself - I just work for it. This is what I work for, this is what I do to be the best. That will show itself when the right time comes. So, it would mean a lot to me, to my family, to my country to be a part of something as huge as that is super important. I can't wait for that to happen."

Karol Rosa vs. Nora Cornolle prediction, pick, start time for UFC on ESPN 71

Karol Rosa and Nora Cornolle meet Saturday on the main card of UFC on ESPN 71 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom. Last event: 2-3 UFC main cards, 2025: 72-56-1 Karol Rosa vs. Nora Cornolle UFC on ESPN 71 preview Rosa (18-7 MMA, 7-4 UFC) has traded wins and losses over her last eight fights, stretching back to 2021, and enters this fight after a unanimous decision loss to Ailin Perez in January. Her last win was a decision win over Panni Kianzad last August. Rosa has never lost back-to-back fights in her career. ... Cornolle (9-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) will aim to keep momentum going from a second-round submission finish of of Hailey Cowan at UFC 314 in April. Prior to that, she suffered her first loss in the UFC, a split decision to Jacqueline Cavalcanti. That result marked the first loss since her pro debut, ending an eight-fight winning streak. Eight of Cornolle's nine career wins have come by stoppage. Karol Rosa vs. Nora Cornolle UFC on ESPN 71 expert pick, prediction Filling out the main card is a women's bantamweight fight between Karol Rosa and Nora Cornolle. Although expectations may not have been very high, Cornolle has arguably overperformed thus far in her UFC tenure, earning some surprising finishes along the way. Nevertheless, Cornolle will be taking an undeniable step up in this contest. Rosa has been a staple of this division for some time, but has failed to deliver on any real 'breakthrough' performances. That said, Rosa is undeniably skilled in almost all areas and deserves her distinction as the betting favorite in this fight. Cornolle will likely have some moments on the feet and in the clinch, but it won't be enough to discount the consistent work rate of Rosa. The pick is Rosa by unanimous decision. Karol Rosa vs. Nora Cornolle UFC on ESPN 71 odds The oddsmakers and the public favor the Brazilian fighter, listing Rosa (-210) and Cornolle (+168) via FanDuel. Karol Rosa vs. Nora Cornolle UFC on ESPN 71 start time, how to watch Rosa and Cornolle are expected to walk to the cage at approximately 10:10 p.m. ET. Neil Magny vs. Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos prediction, pick, start time for UFC on ESPN 71

Neil Magny and Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos meet Saturday on the main card of UFC on ESPN 71 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom. Last event: 2-3 UFC main cards, 2025: 72-56-1 Neil Magny vs. Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos UFC on ESPN 71 preview Magny (29-13 MMA, 22-12 UFC) will aim to avoid dropping three straight for the first time in his career. Magny was finished in the first round in back-to-back fights against Michael Morales and Carlos Prates. The last win for Magny came at UFC 297, a third-round comeback stoppage against Mike Malott. ... Dos Santos (25-9-1 MMA, 11-5-1 UFC) is also entering on the heels of a loss – a second-round stoppage to Chidi Njokuani. Prior to that setback in March, dos Santos finished Zach Scroggin just 75 seconds into their November fight. Neil Magny vs. Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos UFC on ESPN 71 expert pick, prediction Serving as a solid offering of two "old heads" is a welterweight clash between Neil Magny and Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos. I'm a fan of both fighters, but there's no denying that we're looking at two post-prime products given their recent form. It's hard to tell who is more shot at this point in their careers, and there are good cases to be made for either side, regardless. I came incredibly close to changing my pick to Magny given how the smaller octagon will likely assist his style, but it's hard to discount the underrated wrestling and grappling of dos Santos. I'm not sure we get a classic performance from either fighter, so I'll semi-reluctantly side with dos Santos to win on the scorecards for being the more offensively potent competitor in pockets. Neil Magny vs. Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos UFC on ESPN 71 odds The oddsmakers and the public are favoring the Brazilian fighter, listing dos Santos (-194) and Magny (+156) via FanDuel. Neil Magny vs. Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos UFC on ESPN 71 start time, how to watch Magny and dos Santos are expected to walk to the cage at approximately 9:40 p.m. ET.
