For the hosts, Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Sultan, the president of the Saudi Esports Federation shared his enthusiasm with the assembled media:
"One of the most spectacular things about gaming is your first initiation to someone, your first meeting of someone, is not who they are as a colour, skin, religion, background, race, gender. It is an avatar in the game and therefore their skill."
The Esports World Cup also attracts plenty of star power. Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo is the tournament's official ambassador and American pop star Post Malone headlines the opening ceremony of this giant gaming festival.

'We chose the side of Israel': Arad mayor bans artists who signed petition to end war

"In accordance with the decision of the Arad Municipal Council, the municipality will not allow incitement against IDF soldiers," the mayor stated. Arad Mayor Yair Maayan announced on Monday that the artists who signed a petition calling for an end to the war in Gaza and the return of hostages will not be allowed to perform in the city. "In accordance with the decision of the Arad Municipal Council, the municipality will not allow incitement against IDF soldiers," the mayor stated. 'These artists are similar to the list of reserve service refusers who have not served in the reserves for years," he added. "We have chosen the side of the IDF soldiers and the State of Israel." Petition signed by Israeli artists The petition was reportedly signed by over 1,000 Israeli artists, celebrities, and cultural figures, including Chava Alberstein, Gidi Gov, and Oshik Levi, and urges an end to the conflict, Ynet reported. 'Our country is starving the people of Gaza to death and contemplating the forced removal of millions of Palestinians from the Strip,' the letter reads, as quoted by KAN. 'We, Israelis dedicated to a peaceful future for our country and our Palestinian neighbors, write this with grave shame, in rage, and in agony.' Singer and Fauda star Idan Amedi, who was injured during his reserve service, criticized the petition, "A group of privileged people echoing stupidity, ignorance, and lies. There is no other army in the world that operates in such a densely populated area with such a low civilian casualty rate. This is proven - go check," he wrote. 'Go into a tunnel. Fight for one day like tens of thousands of reservists, and then sign a petition. You're worthless - I've had enough of you.' Eyal Sher, CEO of the Israel Festival and one of the organizers of the petition, responded to the backlash: 'A message to all the critics: take a moment to step back and focus on the core message. The petition isn't meant to cause division or stir conflict among different groups in Israeli society," Ynet quoted. He continued, "It aims to express values of humanity, compassion, and a desire to end the war, bring the hostages home, and begin healing and recovery, both in Israel and the region.'

Martin Buday 'very upset and very sad' about UFC exit despite 7-1 promotional record

Martin Buday was riding a three-fight win streak when his manager called in late July. The fighter, then ranked No. 12 in the UFC's heavyweight division, had just scored a unanimous decision win over the legendary jiu-jitsu champion Marcus Buchecha at UFC Abu Dhabi. Buday was still celebrating — Buchecha, after all, had been an idol of his for more than a decade. But on fight week, Buday said, the two foes 'separated any good emotions' during an impromptu meeting. They shook hands and wished the best man to win. That man, on July 26, was Buday. Buday out-struck Buchecha on the feet and successfully stuffed the jiu-jitsu ace's takedown attempts. He ground out a convincing but unspectacular win. The 33-year-old explained Monday on Uncrowned's "The Ariel Helwani Show" that he knew the Buchecha bout would be the last of his UFC contract, but he'd been in that situation before. 'In the first contract, they let me fight it to the end,' he said. 'This was the same scenario, again.' Back then, an August 2023 first-round submission win over Josh Parisian helped seal Buday's fate. The UFC offered a four-fight contract extension. This time around, there was no such deal. There was no negotiation. The UFC was no longer in the Buday business. 'I found out last Wednesday [July 30],' said Buday. 'I got a call from my manager to say the UFC will not be extending the contract with us. So, it was pretty rough. I was very upset and very sad because I love UFC. I was hoping to get re-signed. I was sad about the situation.' Buday, who won seven of his eight UFC appearances in the promotion's heavyweight division, said he's aware of the reasons why. He'd been told his victories needed that punctuation mark — that slam dunk. Buday needed to finish people in exciting fashion, rather than win by decision, as all but the Parisian win were. 'My fights are not attractive on the eyes of the fan,' he said. 'But I do everything to secure the win. That was the main problem — I didn't have finishes in the fight.' When Buday lost by brutal, second-round knockout to Shamil Gaziev in 2023, he feared the worst. He feared the UFC would cut him from the roster. It was communicated to him that the UFC "was not happy with decisions.' He needed a big finish, he said. But, against Gaziev, it was he who got finished. Buday admitted he was worried. "It was a bad performance," he said. Regardless, Buday rebounded to win three fights in a row. He eked out a split decision over the former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski in June 2024, even though Buday's father died during fight week. Buday 'wasn't there mentally' that week, or in the fight itself, he said. 'It was a very unfortunate situation for me.' Buday then scored a clear-cut unanimous decision over Uran Satybaldiev this past April. And then, of course, he beat Buchecha in what he described as his 'best performance in the UFC.' Ranked No. 12 in the division after a three-year grind, his exit from MMA's market-leader blindsided him somewhat. 'I was hoping after my last performance that I would be re-signed,' he said. Nonetheless, Buday chooses to look at the future with optimism as he's confident his skills are improving. There are also at least three organizations scrambling for his signature, he claimed. Buday said there is interest from the PFL, and that Oktagon MMA — a surging promotion in Europe — is also keen to bring its former champ back. 'I have some offers from other promoters all around the world,' he said. One other proposal was from GLORY Kickboxing, but Buday knocked back their advances. He wants his next move to stay within the realm of mixed martial arts. He would also spur any advances from KSW, if there were any, because he trains alongside Phil De Fries, the current KSW heavyweight champion. 'I will decline that offer instantly,' he said. 'I will not fight my teammates.' That leaves PFL and Oktagon. 'I like the interest from PFL, and also Oktagon MMA, where I was champion before the UFC,' he said, noting that he's leaning toward a return to the organization he fought for from 2018-21. 'They're doing incredible things and are No. 1 in Europe right now. Expanding big. Doing stadiums. Big promotion, and good for them.' If Buday continues sharpening his skills and starts finishing fights rather than simply winning them, then he hopes a return to the UFC is in the cards. It's a company he says he still loves. 'I want to thank them for making me the fighter and person I am today,' he said. 'If I do some good wins, good finishes, maybe they will be open to re-signing me.'

Local golf: Carlowden ends long wait for NNY 6-Man title; C-Way's Barton wins individual title

Aug. 4—The team from the Lewis County triangle of Carthage, Lowville and Denmark on Sunday used outstanding team depth to win the title for the third time in the event's 89 year history and the 11th time it was staged at the Gouverneur Country Club. Brandon Mothersell (75-69-144), Scott Taylor 73-72-145 and Kyle Nichols 71-76-147 led the way and team members Justin Taylor (156), Rob Hayes (171) and Anthony Burgess (160) rounded out the effort. Carlowden also produced the tournament's junior champion in Eli McCue and senior champion in Todd Slate with both golfers finishing at 145. Carlowden opened a 438-449 first day lead over the Partridge Run Country Club of Canton and finished with an 881-892 margin over Malone, which shared second day honors with Gouverneur at 440. Potsdam placed third with a score of 893 and Gouverneur took fourth at 897. Taylor said the methodically-won title came from an organized effort starting with a dramatic upgrade in the course. "We have had an influx of new members but it all started with our outstanding staff. our director of golf Matt Russell and Ken Hodge and Dana Hodge have really done an outstanding job," Taylor said. "It think we have the best greens and the best course in the area." Taylor also said the effort of the Gouverneur Country Club to host the tournament on its nine-hole tract was second to none. "Gouverneur did a great job and deserve a lot of credit," he said. Tournament director Bart Kidwell called the event three days of outstanding golf with countless hours of preparation by volunteers. "The course is owned an maintained by the members and a lot of members volunteered a lot of hours over the three days doing everything from spotting on the course to cooking food," said Kidwell. Club member Ken Augliano was quick to interject the role of Kidwell's leadership. "Bart Kidwell is a volunteer and directed the tournament. He didn't play and he put in a lot of hours getting things ready," said Augliano. "And I want to thank all the players who came in put on a great display on how to play golf." Nobody played better than Matt Barton of the C-Way Golf Club in Clayton who claimed the individual title with a two-day total of 139 and prevailed on the final hole with a one-stroke margin of Jack Finnerty of Partridge Run. The duel went down to the final shot on the par five 18th hole where Barton made a birdie putt and Finnerty was unable to get up and down after hitting the ball over the green on his second shot. Barton stayed in his comfort zone throughout his 36 holes on his first time playing the course. "I had never even seen the course before this weekend. For me it was all about wedges. I had a lot of 90 to 100 to 110 yard shots and wedge play was solid. Not a lot can go wrong if you have a lot of 10-foot birdie putts," said the former Thousand Islands standout. Raine Rumble of Gouverneur placed third at 141. Tom Smith of Potsdam took the super senior title at 151 one stroke ahead of Craig Woods of Gouverneur and Chris Denesha of C-Way won the director's title. Ryan Patenaude of Malone and Cooper Lovely of Potsdam tied for second in the junior division at 148. Deane Manning of Thompson Park of Watertown and Bruce Weiner of St. Lawrence tied fro second place in the super senior division at 157. Tournament leaders: Carlowden 438-444-882 (Brandon Mothersell 75-69-144), Malone 451-440- 891 (Blake Pritchard 71-73-144) Potsdam 450-443- 893 (Tyler Berkman 73-73-146), Gouverneur 457-440-887, (Raine Rumble 74-67-141), Partridge Run 449-449-898 (Jack Finnerty 69-71-140), Massena 442-448-900 (Colin Patterson 73-72-145), C-Way 446-455-901 (Matt Barton 139), Thompson Park 457-450-907 (Josh Woodward 70-74-144), St. Lawrence University 463-466-929 (Ryan Jones 76-78-154, Scott Nickerson 78-76-154), Ives Hill 491-476-967 (Kalani Zehr 79-77-156) and Tupper Lake 479-456-992 (Jim Boucher 77-72-149).
