Mirra Andreeva advances to quarter-finals at Wimbledon

RTÉ News5 days ago
Mirra Andreeva's stunning Centre Court debut ended in bizarre fashion when she forgot the score and did not realise she had won the match.
The Russian teenager became the youngest woman to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 18 years by breezing through round four with a rapid 6-2 6-3 win over world number 10 Emma Navarro.
But an unaware Andreeva was so focused on her performance that she lined up to face another Navarro serve, rather than celebrate converting match point.
With her American opponent waiting at the net to shake hands, the 18-year-old briefly looked bemused before jogging in from the baseline, to the amusement of spectators.
"I kept telling myself I'm not the one who is up on the score, I am the one who is down," she said after setting up a meeting with Belinda Bencic with victory in 75 minutes.
"That helped me to stay focused and in the end I completely forgot the score.
"I'm happy that I did it because I think I would have been three times more nervous on a match point."
Aside from the humorous mix-up, Andreeva suffered no hiccups as she emphatically stayed on course to emulate coach Conchita Martinez – the 1994 Wimbledon champion.
She blitzed Navarro to clinch the opening set in just 33 minutes and, despite being broken twice in the second, was not unduly troubled.
Aged 18 years and 75 days, Andreeva is exactly the same age as Czech player Nicole Vaidisova was when she progressed to the last eight in 2007.

Earlier, Bencic blew five match points on her own serve before bouncing back to reach the quarter-finals for the first time.
The 2021 Olympic champion also saved three break points in a captivating ninth game of the second set against Ekaterina Alexandrov a.
Russian 18th seed Alexandrova eventually broke to prolong the Court One contest but Bencic responded immediately to progress 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.
Bencic's best run in SW19 comes after she missed last year's championships due to the birth of daughter Bella in April 2024.
Five-time grand slam champion Iga Swiatek cruised through to her second Wimbledon quarter-final.
The Polish world number four began with successive double faults before defeating Danish 23rd seed Clara Tauson 6-4 6-1.
Russian world number 19 Liudmila Samsonova awaits Swiatek after she beat unseeded 22-year-old Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 7-5 7-5.

Rory McIlroy eyes overdue win after moving into share of lead at Scottish Open

Rory McIlroy put himself in pole position to win the Scottish Open after he carded a fine four-under par 66 at the Renaissance Club. The world number two landed five birdies, and just one bogey, to leave him on 11-under par for the tournament, and a share of the overnight lead with American Chris Gotterup. England's Matt Fitzpatrick and Marco Penge are two shots back following rounds of 69, tied for third with Americans Wyndham Clark and Jake Knapp. McIlroy landed his first birdie at the par-five third before dropping a shot at the seventh. However, he bounced back by picking up a shot on the next hole before further birdies at the 10th and par-three 14th. Rory McIlroy carded a four-under par 66 on the third day (Malcolm Mackenzie/PA) The Irishman appeared in slight trouble on the par-five 16th after a wayward drive ended in the deep rough. But a beautiful approach allowed him to roll in a straight uphill birdie putt. He set himself up with another birdie chance at the following par three only to see his putt sail agonisingly wide. A perfect 340-yard tee shot at the concluding hole put him in the driving seat once more, but again his birdie attempt rolled narrowly past the hole. However, McIlroy's encouraging performance – with clear signs of him being back at his best – comes at a crucial time with The Open at Royal Portrush to follow next week. It also marks a significant improvement on McIlroy's form since he won the Masters in April to complete the Grand Slam. 'I have had a great season but yes, and I have said this before, when you do something you that have dreamt of for your whole life, and then do it, it was a huge moment in my life and career. 'I just need that little bit of time, and to be back here for the last couple of weeks and digest all of it, I feel like I came here for this tournament with renewed enthusiasm and excitement for the rest of the year.' World number 158 Gotterup equalled the course record with nine birdies in a bogey-free 61 on Friday to start the third day two shots clear. However, he will start the final day on level terms with McIlroy following a level-par round featuring two birdies and the same number of bogeys.

‘I'm pretty close to being back to Masters level' – Rory McIlroy bullish after taking co-lead at Scottish Open

The 2023 champion has struggled to reset after becoming just the sixth player to complete the career Grand Slam by winning the Masters at Augusta National in April. But after carding a four-under 66 to share the lead with American Chris Gotterup on 11-under-par at the Renaissance Club, two clear of the field, he feels he's had time to "digest" that momentous victory and believes his game is close to where it was in April. "It's my first realistic chance to win after the Masters," McIlroy said after a five-birdie round in a testing breeze. "I've had a great season. I won at Pebble, I won The Players. But look, I've said this when you do something that you've been dreaming of your whole life, to do something that was a huge moment in my life and my career, I think I just needed that little bit of time. "And to be back here for the last couple of weeks, I feel like I could actually digest all of it. I feel like I came to this tournament with sort of renewed enthusiasm and excitement for the rest of the year." Happy with his form with the driver and believing he's overcome his battle to conquer a left-to-right wind, he sounded a word of warning to his rivals at Royal Portrush next week. "I think I'm pretty close to being back to the level I was at going into the Masters," he said. "I think I've had a little bit of a lull, which I feel is understandable. So I'm just getting back to the level that I know that I can play at." Overnight leader Gotterup shot a level par 70 to share the lead with McIlroy, who feels he has slowly improved in the left-to-right winds that had caused him problems in the first two rounds. "I'm pretty much there," the Hollywood star said of his game, which he rated at 80 per cent on Thursday. ADVERTISEMENT "One of the things I was wanting to work on was my ball flight in that left-to-right wind. "I don't know if it's luck or whatever, but you know, the wind on the range now is straight off the left. It has been for the last day and a half. "It's been nice to hit some balls in that wind direction and get a feel for that. I feel like I controlled my ball flight well today in the little bit of wind that was out there and my game is pretty good on the greens. "My lag putting has been good. All the things you need to do well on links golf to succeed." McIlroy has received a hero's welcome in Scotland and hopes for more of the same in the final round as he heads out with Gotterup with a two-shot lead over English duo Matt Fitzpatrick and Marco Penge and American pair Jake Knapp and Wyndham Clark. "I'm excited to get out there," McIlroy added. "The atmosphere has been great all week. Obviously, the weather helps that. "Tee times are pushed up a little bit, so hopefully get the business done early-ish and I can watch the last two or three sets of the Wimbledon final." Pádraig Harrington also got another round of links practice under his belt and made four bogeys and two birdies in a 72 to share 66th on one over.
