Stream Deck rival gets £104 price cut in Prime Day deal as shopper says its 'no competition'

Daily Record09-07-2025
'I'm really impressed by the device. Really fun and easy to use, nice ergonomics.'
While Amazon's Prime Day event is a great time for the majority of people to snap up a bargain, gamers are particularly happy as they have the chance to save hundreds of pounds on a new gaming device or console.
Many people have recently been raving about the Steam Deck, which is a portable device that allows gamers to play the games from their Steam library while on the go. However, these devices come with hefty price tags that can put shoppers off.
However, a rival console has been given a huge discount on Amazon as part of their Prime Day event. Normally retailing for £504, the ASUS ROG Ally Handheld Gaming Console has been dropped down to £399.99 in a limited time deal.
The ROG Ally is said to be Asus' Windows 11 gaming powerhouse, which also allows gamers to play their favourite games while travelling or on the go, reports the Express. Equipped with an AMD Ryzen Z1 chip, this device is able to boost frame rates without compromising its excellent image quality.
In terms of battery life, the device comes with an 80Wh battery built-in supply for longer gaming sessions and comes with FreeSync Premium installed. Additionally, the handheld console has a 120Hz refresh rate screen and has access to the Xbox Game Pass to easily download and stream games.
In comparison to the Stream Deck, the ROG Ally is said to have a better resolution, storage and screen than its rival, while also weighing less. For overall performance, the Steam Deck's rival delivers the better performance.
However, as the ROG Ally features a lot more power than its rival, its battery life is a bit on the weaker side. This is dependent however on the game users decide to play. Some shoppers did note only getting an hour of playtime before having to plug the console in for a charge.
For those wanting a Steam Deck, the best deal we could find on Amazon was the Valve Steam Deck 512GB Handheld Console for £479. With access to your full Steam Library, this console was designed for comfortable playtime as the rear of the device is equipped for a wide range of hand sizes.
Alternatively, for those wanting the latest Nintendo device to hit the market, Argos is selling the Nintendo Switch 2 Console for £395.99. With a larger 1080p screen, shoppers have the option of playing with a handheld portable device or connecting it to the TV to play in 4K resolution.
Back to the ROG Ally, it currently boasts a 4.3 star rating from Amazon shoppers. One customer even said when choosing between the Steam Deck and its rival device, it was 'no competition'.
One five-star reviewer said: "Wow!!!! To say I'm seriously impressed with this bit of kit is an understatement. After months of reading reviews and comparing the ROG Ally with the Steam Deck, the lure of the improved performance and convenience of Windows/GamePass just made it no competition.
"The convenience of having a mobile Windows install for OneDrive/OneNote etc and all the other apps I already own was also a pretty big deciding factor. I'm not adverse to linux, and use it daily, but just have so much invested in windows software that it was something else the Ally had over the steam deck."
Tech deal of the week
It's that time of year where we are looking for ways to keep cool amidst the balmy, summer days.
One item shoppers are raving over is this DDKJ Neck Fan that can be used to keep cool when commuting, at work or in the home. Even better, it costs just £26.98 on Amazon.
With certain parts of the UK set to reach sweltering 35C, it's handy that this neck fan comes with a rose gold cooling plate around the neck curve that is said to "feel like an ice cube", dropping temperatures to just 15C in as little as one second.
Boasting an ergonomic, wearable design, it features two bladeless fans that are safe to wear, with five different speed settings that provide a cooling effect on the head, neck and sides.
It's also quite smart thanks to a LED digital display that makes the operation easy and convenient, while the built-in 5500mAh large capacity rechargeable battery features a fast charging chip that ensures a full charge within just 2.5-3hrs.
Numerous shoppers who have bagged the neck fan say it is a "godsend" and a "lifesaver" for the heatwave, with one writing: "This is easy to wear when sitting or walking generally. Works fast and never needed it on anything but the lowest setting! At my time of life it is a lifesaver, especially through the heatwave we experienced."
Keep cool amidst the rising temperatures with the DDKJ Neck Fan with Cooling Plate on Amazon for £26.98
With another happy shopper adding: "I'm really impressed by the device. Really fun and easy to use, nice ergonomics. Full windows experience. Picture and sound quality is fantastic. Great for PC game pass."
However, one shopper wished the device came with a case, writing: "The first downside is you have to get a case for it, unlike the Steam Deck which already comes with one. It's not a major issue but I do feel that it should come with one given its major competitor does and sometimes the little things matter."
With another noting about the battery life: "The only downside is the battery life, obviously the higher spec the game the quicker it drains so if you're traveling with this take a battery with you to top it up."
Despite this, a top reviewer also commented: "I managed to get this on sale for £400 and it's an absolute bargain, screen is very good quality and big enough for pretty much any game and fairly light compared to a lot of other handhelds.
"I've played a number of AAA games on this and with a few setting adjustments on generally medium settings I'm easily getting 30-60 FPS. The speakers are very good and the graphics performance is actually better than I'd hoped for."

How Google's AI mode works as new feature set to hit UK browsers this week

Google's latest AI feature first launched in the US in May and is now making its way to the UK. Google is the web browser that many of us rely on when we are wanting to look up new information or find the best activities to take part in while travelling abroad. While the popular web browser can collate an endless variety of information in a matter of seconds, an upcoming update is set to make this experience even smoother. ‌ Set to launch in the UK this week, Google's smart AI mode has been created to make browsing the web a more fluid and faster experience. For those who struggle to find the answers to complicated questions, this new feature will become your saving grace. ‌ First launched in the US back in May, the new AI mode will allow web users to find detailed answers to all of their queries no matter how complicated, unlike the current AI overview service, reports the Express. Most of the UK is expected to have access to this handy feature by the end of the week. ‌ So what differentiates this new sparkly AI mode in comparison to the AI overview feature that many people in the UK have now become acquainted with? The main point of the new feature is to provide answers to more detailed and conversational questions. Therefore, web users can be more specific about what they are looking for instead of supplying a broad question. ‌ For example, instead of writing "What to do in Glasgow?", web browsers can instead write "Things to do in Glasgow this weekend with friends. We are big music lovers, love exploring the wilderness and enjoy a variety of food." With this more detailed question, Google will collate a full query search that will include a detailed overview, links to websites and location maps so travellers can easily plan their next trip. And if you end up having another question, Google users can easily add another search to the question instead of having to start a whole new conversation. ‌ While a useful feature for any queries you have, Google says that this new service will flourish when asked exploratory questions or given complicated tasks. For those wanting to plan a trip, get a further understanding of a confusing 'how-to' or compare two tech products, the AI mode should provide a helpful solution. Google explained: "We've found that early users of AI Mode are asking questions that are two or three times the length of traditional search queries." ‌ UK Google users will be able to identify when they have access to the new feature as an AI Mode box will appear in your browser window. From here you can easily ask Google questions through your voice, text or camera. Vice president of product management at Google, Hema Budaraju said: "Starting this week, we are excited to bring AI Mode to the UK. AI Mode expands on what AI overviews can do; it has got more advanced reasoning, thinking and multimodal capabilities from Gemini 2.5. "You can ask nuanced questions, things that would have taken multiple, multiple, multiple searches before, can actually be one prompt." ‌ While some people may be a bit wary of this new feature as rival companies have experienced issues with AI providing the wrong information, Google is confident that this won't become an issue. Bubaraju said: "I think for us it's really important to keep the bar quality of Google search. We have 25 years of experience in building stronger ranking systems, strong quality systems, as well as safety systems. "We do extensive internal testing to find challenges ourselves. And all of that is learning that goes into building up these features and these new technologies. "And as with any early-stage AI product, we won't always get it right, but we are committed to continuous improvement." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Amazon's 'large and robust' smartwatch worth £70 now £38 in sale

Shoppers said they had 'no regrets' when buying this 'rugged and sporty' timepiece Amazon shoppers have been heaping praise on a smartwatch that is on offer for almost half of its usual £70 price tag during a sale. People loved the fact that its design was ideal for "adventurers, athletes and professionals" alike. The LIGE Tactical Fitness Tracker Watch normally costs £69.99, but there is a deal on with Amazon where shoppers can order themselves this watch for £37.78 - a discount of 46%. All options come with two interchangeable straps, one metal and one silicone. The "rugged" watch boasts being put through "a series of rigorous military-grade tests", including extreme temperatures, low atmospheric pressure, and drilling, to "ensure reliability in harsh environments" as well as day-to-day life. Amazon also claims that the fully customisable device can stay powered on for up to 10 days after just two hours of charging. At a fraction of the price of an Apple Watch or FitBit, shoppers can call, text, and receive social media notifications. As an added bonus, the watch doubles as a flashlight, with one built into the side of the device. With fitness and health at its core, the watch allows easy tracking of more than 100 different sports and compiles "comprehensive" real-time health data from workouts. It also tracks steps, heart rate, blood oxygen, and sleep quality. Wearers can also get reminders to move and hydration alerts to help develop healthy habits. Similar devices are on the market for people wanting an affordable way into the smartwatch world without spending hundreds of pounds. For example, Sports Direct is offering this Karrimor Smart Watch (£19.99, down from £49.99) and the Reflex Active Series 23 Smart Watch from Currys (£39.99). But, the Amazon offer had dozens of glowing reviews from other shoppers who had "no regrets" over their purchase. One said: "My favorite [strap] is the one that is made of steel, which is not common and really heps this watch stand out. Comfortable, smooth and pleasant to wear." Another added: "This watch is perfect in many ways. A great-sized face, amazing battery life and packed with lots of functions - the torch is so handy." A third wrote: "Great watch with good features. Easy to use and a nice big display. The strap is very easy to change and the watch is easy to use." There were some critics though, like one shopper who claimed the 47mm screen was "laughably large" and another suggested that their watch "won't react to movement." And, a third warned others: "The heart rate fluctuates completely inaccurately when running between 90 and 190. It is good for everyday use, but not for sport" However, the overall thoughts seem to be positive with more glowing reviews offering five stars. One of those shared: "At first glance, you see a large and robust watch that gives a very good image. It seems that they have put a lot of care into the details. Not only is it ideal for personal use, but it's a gift that stands out." Another person who was pleased with the device said: "An ultra-sturdy and versatile watch, ideal for adventurers, athletes and professionals." And, one more added: "I fully charged it and after 24 hours of normal use I still had more than 90% left, while I thought that I should charge it every day like my phone."

Spotify forecasts profit below estimates on higher taxes, shares sink

July 29 (Reuters) - Spotify (SPOT.N), opens new tab forecast third-quarter profit below Street estimates on Tuesday as higher taxes related to employee salaries outweigh upbeat demand for its premium music-streaming plans. The company's shares, which have risen around 57% so far this year, fell nearly 9% in premarket trading. Investors are closely monitoring the Swedish company's profitability after price hikes, cost cuts and subscriber gains in recent years helped it achieve its first annual profit in 2024. Spotify said it expects operating income of 485 million euros ($561.05 million) in the current quarter, below an estimate of 562 million euros, according to data compiled by LSEG. Its third-quarter monthly active users (MAU) forecast of 710 million was in line with estimates, while its prediction for a 5 million increase in premium subscribers to 281 million was above a Visible Alpha estimate of 279 million. Its board has approved a $1 billion increase to its share repurchase program, raising the total authorization to $2 billion, with $1.9 billion available for buybacks through April 2026. Tough competition in music streaming and podcasts from rivals from Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab and Amazon (AMZN.O), opens new tab has also prompted Spotify to increase marketing, which contributed to an 8% increase in operating expenses in the April-to-June quarter. Premium subscribers rose 12% to 276 million in the second quarter, compared with a Visible Alpha estimate of 273 million. Its MAU net additions of 18 million brought the total to 696 million, exceeding expectations. Second-quarter revenue rose 10% to 4.19 billion euros ($4.85 billion), but fell short of an estimate of 4.26 billion euros. Spotify said unfavorable currency movements reduced year-over-year total revenue growth by about 440 basis points in the reported quarter. It forecast third-quarter revenue of 4.2 billion euros, below the estimate of 4.48 billion euros. ($1 = 0.8645 euros)
