Portugal's Francisco Cabral on receiving permission to alter Wimbledon dress code to pay tribute to Diogo Jota: ‘An honor'

Portuguese tennis player Francisco Cabral was given permission to stray from Wimbledon's strict all-white dress code to honor the late Liverpool and Portugal soccer star Diogo Jota, he told reporters, including CNN, on Friday. Jota died in a car crash in Spain early Thursday morning. He was 28. His brother, André Silva – who was also a professional soccer player – also died in the accident at the age of 25. Cabral, who competed in men's doubles, told CNN he initially wanted to wear a black armband, but he said he was told that would not be allowed. He was granted approval to wear a small black ribbon instead. The AELTC said to CNN in a statement: 'We are always open to having conversations with players regarding such matters, and given the tragic circumstances, the Referee's Office has approved the players wearing a black ribbon as a mark of respect and condolence.' Cabral, ranked 40th in the world in doubles, won his first-round match Thursday but fell in the second round Friday with his playing partner Lucas Miedler of Austria. 'Yesterday, I came up with the idea of wearing a black strap, but that was not allowed,' Cabral said. 'The players' relations, they had a black ribbon, and I asked for let me play with it and I just did it this morning. 'It was an honor. It's not for the best reason. But yeah, he was not only an inspiration to me but for the country in general, he meant so much in the sport. He conquered so much in his life. So it was just an honor for me to try and help, if only 1% for the family and everybody.' There is one Portuguese man left in the singles draw: Nuno Borges is scheduled to play Friday against Russian and No. 17 seed Karen Khachanov.

Liverpool Pay Tribute to Diogo Jota as Funeral Details are Confirmed

Liverpool Mourns Diogo Jota as Funeral Details Are Confirmed Grief has cloaked Liverpool following the heartbreaking news of Diogo Jota's death. The beloved Portuguese forward lost his life in a tragic car crash in Spain, alongside his brother André. The incident occurred while Jota was en route to the UK, having been advised against flying due to recent pulmonary surgery. Instead, he was travelling to board a ferry when the fatal collision took place. Advertisement A player who defined commitment and fire in a red shirt, Jota's passing has rocked not only his club but the footballing world at large. Tributes have poured in from across the globe, with Liverpool supporters, teammates and rivals alike uniting in sorrow. Final Farewell in Portugal According to a local priest, Diogo Jota's funeral will take place on Friday afternoon in Portugal. The priest told CNN Portugal, 'The bodies of the brothers will arrive at the resurrection chapel for the wake, which will take place tomorrow, and then the funeral will be at 10am on Saturday.' The wake is to be held in São Cosme, located just 30 minutes from his hometown of Porto. It's a place heavy with significance, just days removed from Jota's wedding to his childhood sweetheart, Rute. The ceremony, described as intimate and joyful, took place in the same region and was attended by close family and friends. Advertisement Now, with unfathomable grief replacing celebration, the community prepares to honour the life of a man who meant so much to so many. From Portugal to the Kop Jota's journey from Paços de Ferreira to Premier League stardom was powered by tenacity and talent in equal measure. His impact at Liverpool was immediate and immense. Quick off the mark, fearless in front of goal and relentless in pressing, he swiftly became a fan favourite. But this tragedy reminds us that beyond the pitch, Jota was a brother, a husband and a son. His funeral will be more than a sporting farewell. It will be a national moment of mourning in Portugal and a solemn day for Liverpool fans, whose connection with the forward extended far beyond his footballing prowess. Advertisement Standing Together in Grief 'We're available to celebrate [their life] with everyone and to share the pain and the Christian hope,' the priest added, speaking not only to a congregation but to a global audience left reeling by the loss. As Liverpool prepares for the new season under Arne Slot, who led the club to Premier League glory in 2025, there will be a void that no tactical shift or signing can fill. Some players leave memories on the pitch, others leave legacies in hearts. Diogo Jota did both. The funeral will take place at 10am on Saturday, following the wake on Friday at 3pm. Liverpool, Portugal and the wider football world will pause to remember a life taken far too soon.
