‘Nathan Lyon isn't that good a bowler…': Rohit Sharma reveals message that got Cheteshwar Pujara to hit AUS spinner for six in 2023 BGT

Indian Express08-06-2025
Rohit Sharma has had his few struggles against Nathan Lyon during his Test career. The wily Australia off-spinner has dismissed the India batter nine times in 19 innings, the most any bowler has removed Rohit in whites.
However, the former India captain doesn't exactly approve of Lyon's world-class status when it comes to situations where his team is in need of rapid runs. Opening up on a viral moment from the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy during his captaincy tenure that had him visibly miffed at his teammate Cheteshwar Pujara's tepid scoring rate, Rohit revealed the message that got the then-India No. 3 to (uncharacteristically) flatten Lyon with a six over wide mid-on.
Staring at the possibility of a rare home defeat were the Indians in the third Test of the four-match series against Australia in Indore two years ago. India were seven down for 140 in the second innings when Pujara and all-rounder Axar Patel's cautious play against Lyon miffed Rohit, who evidently wanted a change of gears. As the cameras panned on the Mumbaikar, Rohit would be seen passing messages to substitute Ishan Kishan, who stepped onto the field to relay the messages.
The stoic Pujara would make Rohit break into a smile soon after as he charged down the strip to smash Lyon over mid-on for six. Though India would eventually settle for a paltry 75-run target set for the Aussies in the defeat, the moment would form the chatter on social media.
'We wanted to get Nathan Lyon off the track a little bit. We wanted to get some runs quickly,' revealed Rohit during the book launch of 'The Diary of a Cricketer's Wife', written by Pujara's wife, Puja, in Mumbai.
'We probably were looking at declaring or something. We were like… 'no, something needs to change now. Maybe, a message would do good'. The entire time, he was bowling with mid-on up. I was like, 'he's not that good of a bowler to keep mid-on up'. I know it was a challenge, the pitch was turning square, but we needed to get runs quickly. So I had to send Ishan,' Rohit said.
Rohit cheekily said that it wasn't always that batters (himself included) received the messages from the dressing room with both hands.
'It's one thing that we send messages. The most important thing is.. sometimes what batters do is whenever someone comes out with a message, we know exactly why he's there. So I would stop him there only!' remarked Rohit.

Empty slots: Players in contention for the last two spots for India in Asia Cup squad

While most names in the Asia Cup squad may face little debate, two spots may prompt some discussion when the selection panel meets on Tuesday. Here's looking at the choices and what they bring to the table: Mohammed Siraj: After his indefatigable display in England, the only logic that should keep him out of the squad would be the much-debated workload management. If there's any player deserving of a rest, it's Siraj, who played every match of the five-Test series, bowled the most overs and got the most wickets and was instrumental in India earning a share of the spoils. Crucially, he ran in from his first ball to his last, and never let up in pace. Harshit Rana: He is known to lose pace and energy in later spells, but shouldn't have much trouble in managing four overs. He has caught the eye with wicket-taking spells for both franchise and country, and isn't lacking in aggression, as he showed in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener in Perth late last year, before losing his wheels in Adelaide. Head coach Gautam Gambhir has seen what he is capable of while being in charge of Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. Prasidh Krishna: He got better as the England series progressed, but is known to thrive more in conditions that offer bounce and some lateral movement. The tall pacer has got all the tools, but whether he would be the ideal bowler for the pitches in Dubai is debatable. His best performances in an India shirt have come when he has been handed responsibility, often in Jasprit Bumrah's absence, as was seen in Sydney and more recently at The Oval. Shreyas Iyer: If the selectors take a call on pure batting pedigree, they don't have to look beyond the player who led two different franchises, both with the willow especially against spin and his leadership, to IPL finals in two successive seasons. He brings calm and game awareness and can set the game up and also finish it. Shreyas has developed a swagger of late and commands respect in whichever dressing room he finds himself in. The player who defined the last IPL should logically be in the Indian T20 side. Rinku Singh: He has been designated a finisher by his IPL team as well as when he has turned out in India colours, often limiting the number of balls he gets to face. Winning a game for his team by hitting five successive sixes in the final over is a rare occurrence, and that freak achievement, while bringing him into the national spotlight, has pigeon-holed him as an endgame player. It doesn't help that Gambhir doesn't like to designate any player as a finisher in his team. Riyan Parag: He has been earmarked as a promising talent but has not quite delivered, at least not on a consistent basis. He has played the odd impressive knock for Rajasthan Royals, but is not known to win games for his side. The Assam player has a second string to his bow in the form of his part-time off-spin, but that's usually good for only a couple of overs. Selectors have been waiting for the 23-year-old to show a mature head on his shoulders to stake a viable claim to a spot in the national side. Washington Sundar: He did all that was asked of him in England – save a Test, hit some big blows in the company of the tail making the vital difference between victory and defeat, while getting crucial wickets with his underrated off-spin. His skill-set would be useful in Dubai, and he was part of the side that won the ICC Champions Trophy there earlier this year. It helps that Gambhir is fond of depth, in both batting and bowling.

Criticism will come and go, but winning matters: Shardul Thakur defends Gautam Gambhir

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has faced relentless criticism since taking charge, particularly regarding the Test format. Despite a promising start with a clean sweep against Bangladesh, India's long home dominance came to an end when they suffered a series defeat against New Zealand. The disappointment deepened after India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia, which also cost them a place in the World Test Championship setbacks were compounded by the retirement of senior stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket, leaving the team in transition. Many critics have questioned Gambhir's approach and whether he can build a squad capable of thriving in the longest all-rounder Shardul Thakur has thrown his weight behind the coach, insisting that Gambhir's qualities and fighting spirit are exactly what the team needs. Thakur highlighted Gambhir's decorated playing career and his ability to inspire the dressing room, both during practice and in pressure situations. 'Yes, we have always seen him as a player who is willing to fight for the team, and even during the huddles, he transferred that energy into us — the one that he brought into the field during his playing days,' Thakur said in an interview with Revsportz.'He is an achiever who has won trophies for the nation and the state. And he brings all those experiences and motivations into the team. Criticism will come and go, but as a team, winning matters, and I believe we are heading in the right direction when it comes to that,' he pointed to India's spirited display during the recent England tour as an example of Gambhir's influence, stressing that the never-give-up attitude instilled by the coach was evident in the side's ahead, Gambhir's immediate challenge will be the upcoming Asia Cup. With the squad yet to be announced, there is curiosity around whether he will experiment with fresh faces or rely on the experienced core of India's T20 setup. Regardless of his choices, the scrutiny is unlikely to fade, but his players remain convinced that Gambhir is the right man to guide India forward.- EndsTune InMust Watch

Cheteshwar Pujara names this recently retired star as the perfect candidate to take up India coaching job

Ravichandran Ashwin surprised one and all when he announced his international retirement in the middle of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The 38-year-old bid adieu to the game after the conclusion of the third Test at the Gabba, Brisbane. Ashwin continues to play domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu and the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Time and time again, Ashwin has come across as one of the sharpest minds going around. Hence, it is no surprise that Cheteshwar Pujara thinks Ashwin has it in him to become India's next coach. Cheteshwar Pujara identifies the perfect candidate to take up India coaching job in the future. (PTI) Recently, during a question-and-answer session on ESPNCricinfo, Pujara was asked about who can take over as the future India coach. Without hesitation, Pujara responded, "Ravichandran Ashwin." Throughout his career, Ashwin has been known as a street-smart cricketer. After the T20 World Cup 2022 match against Pakistan, even Virat Kohli labelled him a "scientist" for having the brains to leave a Mohammad Nawaz delivery, anticipating it to be a wide. Ashwin played 106 Tests, 116 ODIs and 65 T20Is for India, taking 765 wickets across the three formats of the game. He is the second-highest wicket-taker for India in international cricket, only behind Anil Kumble. Ashwin not pleased with the overthinker tag Quite often in the past, Ashwin has spoken about how he doesn't like the tag of being an overthinker. 'It's unfair to actually say somebody's an overthinker because that person's journey is his own. And nobody has a right or business to do that. There have been statements that people have made all along when leadership question has come my way, there have been people who are been out there telling, my name is not the first name of the sheet when India tour abroad,' Ashwin told the Indian Express earlier. 'Whether that name is first on the sheet or not is something I can't control. If I earned it, it's got to be there, and that's my belief. As I said, I have no complaints, I have no time to sit back and throw punches or regret or anything. I have no regrets about anyone," he added. Ashwin represented the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025. However, he didn't have an ideal time with the franchise, taking seven wickets in nine games. It needs to be seen whether he is retained by the franchise ahead of the next season.
