Egypt, Jordan connect via Coral Bridge submarine cable after 25 years
The ceremony was attended by Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat, Jordan's Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship Sami Smeirat, and South Sinai Governor Khaled Mubarak.
Spanning 15 kilometers across the Gulf of Aqaba, the cable is designed with a large number of optical fibers, enabling high-capacity international data traffic to meet rising demand from artificial intelligence (AI) applications and data centers. Its short length reduces costs and boosts the speed of international data transmission.
The project was developed under a cooperation agreement signed in January 2024 between Telecom Egypt (WE) and Jordan's NaiTel, the communications arm of Aqaba Digital City.
The cable is the first submarine system to be landed in Taba, part of Telecom Egypt's newly established digital infrastructure in Sinai.
It will soon extend to Aqaba at the Aqaba Digital City Global Data Center, ensuring service continuity through alternative routes and backup connections for companies and cloud service providers hosted there.
Egyptian Minister Talaat said the Coral Bridge cable is a significant addition to Egypt's submarine network and a step in diversifying international infrastructure by creating new landing points and routes across the Sinai Peninsula.
He stressed that Egypt's strategy is to strengthen its role as a major transit point for global data traffic, noting that more than 90% of internet traffic between East and West passes through the country via 15 submarine cables and 11 landing points.
Jordanian Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship Smeirat described Coral Bridge as a digital gateway for Jordan and a practical outcome of the two countries' political and economic cooperation.
He noted that the project follows the recent 33rd session of the Egyptian-Jordanian Higher Committee in Amman and will help position Egypt and Jordan as regional and global hubs for data transfer.
He added that Jordan seeks to maximize digital gateways and expressed hopes for further collaboration, inviting Talaat to visit Amman for continued discussions.
South Sinai Governor Mubarak said the cable strengthens ties between Taba and Aqaba, supporting cooperation in digital communication as well as tourism and sports projects. He also highlighted the internet's role in promoting South Sinai's tourism sector.

Egypt plans new submarine power cable to Jordan: report
Egypt is planning to build another submarine power cable to Jordan with a capacity of 2,000 megawatts (MW) to supply electricity to Syria, Iraq and Lebanon, a Saudi news network reported on Tuesday. The project will be completed in 2029 and will quadruple the present power supply to Jordan, Asharq Business said, quoting an Egyptian government source. 'Egypt is planning to export electricity to Iraq, Syria and Lebanon via a submarine cable to Jordan with a capacity of 2,000 project is still under study,' the report said. It added that the new cable would start from Taba town in South Sinai and stretch to the Gulf of Aqaba on the Red Sea. The project is expected to be completed within 30 months, the report said, noting that Egypt is preparing to invite consultancy bids for the project. According to the report, Egypt is already linked to Jordan via a 500 MW capacity submarine cable which was built in 1999. Kaspersky detected a new remote access trojan targeting financial institutions through Skype messenger
Kaspersky's Global Research and Analysis Team (GReAT) has uncovered GodRAT — a new Remote Access Trojan distributed via malicious screensaver files disguised as financial documents and delivered through Skype messenger until March 2025, subsequently transitioning to other channels. SMBs in UAE, Hong Kong, Jordan and Lebanon were targeted throughout this campaign. The threat actor deployed a newly identified Remote Access Trojan (RAT) named GodRAT, which was found in a client's source code on a popular online scanner, where it was uploaded in July, 2024. The archive, titled GodRAT V3.5_______dll.rar, also includes the GodRAT builder, capable of generating both executable and DLL payloads. This builder allows attackers to disguise the malicious payload by selecting legitimate process names (e.g. for code injection and saving the final file in various formats, including .exe, .com, .bat, .scr, and .pif. To evade detection, the attackers used steganography to embed shellcode within image files depicting financial data. This shellcode downloads the GodRAT malware from a Command-and-Control (C2) server. The RAT then establishes a TCP connection to the C2 server using the port specified in its configuration blob. It collects operating system details, local hostname, malware process name and process ID, the user account associated with the malware process, installed antivirus software, and the presence of a capture driver. GodRAT supports additional plugins, and once installed, the attackers utilized the FileManager plugin to explore the victim's systems and deployed password stealers targeting Chrome and Microsoft Edge to extract credentials. In addition to GodRAT, they also employed AsyncRAT as a secondary implant to maintain prolonged access. 'GodRAT appears to be an evolution of AwesomePuppet, which was reported by Kaspersky in 2023 and is likely linked to the Winnti APT. Its distribution methods, rare command-line parameters, code similarities with Gh0st RAT, and shared artifacts — such as a distinctive fingerprint header — suggest a common origin. Despite being nearly two decades old, legacy implant codebases like Gh0st RAT continue to be actively used by threat actors, often customized and rebuilt to target a wide range of victims. The discovery of GodRAT demonstrates how such long-known tools can remain relevant in today's cybersecurity landscape,' comments Saurabh Sharma, Security Researcher within Kaspersky's Global Research and Analysis Team.
