China Pavilion Wows Visitors at Osaka Expo

OSAKA, Japan, April 30, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Since its officially opening on April 13, the Osaka World Expo's China Pavilion has become one of the most popular attractions at the Expo. By incorporating traditional Chinese cultural elements such as bamboo slips, Chinese characters, and scrolls and presenting exhibits that connect the past, present, and future, the China Pavilion boasts the theme of 'Building a Community of Life for Man and Nature—Future Society of Green Development.' As of the end of April, it had received nearly 90,000 visitors, over 5,700 per day on average and 8,000 on weekends.
The China Pavilion consists of three segments: 'Harmony between Humanity and Nature' 'Green Mountains and Clear Waters' and 'Endless Life.'
The 'Harmony between Humanity and Nature' section highlights China's ancient ecological wisdom, which emphasizes respect and reverence for nature. It features a large multimedia display themed around the 24 solar terms and a digital presentation of Pictures of Tilling and Weaving, the world's earliest agricultural encyclopedia. By using modern technology, it showcases replicas of iconic artifacts such as the oracle bones unearthed in Xiaotun Village, the He Zun, and the copper plates of the imperial edict on unifying weights and measures of the Qin dynasty, as well as key archaeological sites like Sanxingdui, Liangzhu, and Yinxu.
The 'Green Mountains and Clear Waters' section explains China's ecological philosophy. Through multimedia installations, it features projects such as the Dujiangyan irrigation system, the world's earliest water conservancy project, the 2,500-year-old mulberry-dike fishpond system and so on.
The 'Endless Life' section focuses on China's breakthroughs in deep space exploration, deep sea research and artificial intelligence. Highlights include the first-ever close-up comparison display of soil from the moon's far side and near side, live video interaction between Chinese astronauts in the Tiangong Space Station and expo visitors, a simulated cabin of the Jiaolong deep-sea submersible showing rare footage from 7,062 meters below the sea, and an AI model that brings the beloved mythological figure Sun Wukong to life and discusses past and present topics with visitors, composing poems, and creating art.
The China Pavilion has hosted various events that promote Kunqu Opera and the 24 solar terms, as well as Chinese companies including iFLYTEK and COSCO. In the coming months, dozens of Chinese provinces, regions, and municipalities will bring their amazing exhibits and performances to make the pavilion even a bigger draw.

New findings reveal existence of prehistoric matrilineal society in east China

JINAN, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese scientists have confirmed the existence of a prehistoric matrilineal community in east China's Shandong Province, pushing back the established timeline of matrilineal social societies, which were previously believed to have emerged no earlier than the Iron Age in Europe. The new findings were published in Nature on Wednesday. The research team analyzed ancient DNA alongside archaeological contexts and multiple stable isotopic data sets from 60 individuals in two separate cemeteries at the Fujia archaeological site in Shandong's coastal Guangrao County, dating back to between 2750 B.C. and 2500 B.C. Their results point to the existence of an early-described matrilineal community in the Neolithic period, characterized by high endogamy and a population practicing millet agriculture near the coast. Evidence of intermarriage between individuals in the two cemeteries and the presence of both primary and secondary burials, organized strictly according to maternal clans, underscore a strong sense of social cohesion and identity at the Fujia site. Zhang Hai, a researcher at Peking University's School of Archaeology and Museology, said that using a multidisciplinary approach, the team confirmed the existence of prehistoric matrilineal social organization. They also uncovered key insights into the structure, population size, subsistence patterns and productivity levels of matrilineal clan societies in the lower Yellow River coastal region during the Neolithic age. Their work marks a major breakthrough in the study of social organization in early human societies, Zhang said.

Chinese researchers charged with smuggling fungus into US

WASHINGTON: Two Chinese scientists have been charged with allegedly smuggling a toxic fungus into the United States that they planned to research at an American university, the Justice Department said Tuesday. Yunqing Jian, 33, and Zunyong Liu, 34, are charged with conspiracy, smuggling, false statements, and visa fraud, the US Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan said in a statement. Jian is in US custody while Liu's whereabouts are unknown. The Justice Department said the pair conspired to smuggle a fungus called Fusarium graminearum into the United States that causes 'head blight,' a disease of wheat, barley, maize, and rice. The fungus is classified in scientific literature as a 'potential agroterrorism weapon,' it said, and causes billions of dollars in losses each year. It causes vomiting, liver damage, and reproductive defects in humans and livestock, it said. According to the complaint, Jian and Liu, her boyfriend, had both previously conducted work on the fungus in China. '(Liu) first lied but then admitted to smuggling Fusarium graminearum into America... so that he could conduct research on it at the laboratory at the University of Michigan where his girlfriend, Jian, worked,' the Justice Department said. US Attorney Jerome Gorgon Jr described the smuggling of the fungus into the United States as a 'national security' concern and emphasized Jian's membership in the Chinese Communist Party. 'These two aliens have been charged with smuggling a fungus that has been described as a 'potential agroterrorism weapon' into the heartland of America, where they apparently intended to use a University of Michigan laboratory to further their scheme,' Gorgon said. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said he was not aware of the case when asked for comment at a regular news briefing on Wednesday. 'The Chinese government has always required Chinese citizens overseas to strictly abide by local laws and regulations, and at the same time safeguards the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens overseas in accordance with the law,' he said. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio vowed last week to 'aggressively revoke visas' for Chinese students, a move condemned by Beijing as 'unreasonable' and 'discriminatory.' Kseniia Petrova, a scientist from Russia at Harvard, is facing potential deportation after she failed to declare biological samples in her luggage upon returning from a trip to Paris.
