Entries Open For 2025 Sustainable Business Awards
Entries are now open for the 2025 Sustainable Business Awards, New Zealand's pre-eminent sustainability awards. Now in their 23rd year, the Awards celebrate outstanding innovation and leadership in sustainability. Entry is free and open to all.
Rachel Brown ONZM, CEO and founder of the Sustainable Business Network, which runs the Awards, says: 'For more than two decades, these awards have recognised people and organisations leading the charge.
'Sustainability alone isn't enough – and that's why these Awards have evolved to showcase those driving bold action and groundbreaking innovation.
'We're looking for a rich diversity of entrants – not just across sectors like construction, energy, food and mobility, but in the way organisations approach sustainability,' she says.
'That includes a range of business models and the integration of te ao Māori perspectives. We need to support sustainable innovators to help them grow and inspire others.'
NZI, the Principal Partner of the Sustainable Business Awards, is dedicated to building a prosperous, sustainable Aotearoa New Zealand.
Garry Taylor, NZI executive general manager, says: 'NZI is proud to support emerging leaders and solutions that showcase the very best in sustainable innovation'.
Finalists of the Sustainable Business Awards form the 'Next' list – an annual list of innovators, entrepreneurs, projects and organisations leading us towards a better future. In 2024, there were 95 organisations and people on the list (the 'Next 95'), selected by a panel of independent judges.
Rachel says those on the Next list are bringing potentially groundbreaking new ideas across multiple sectors: 'Anyone can have the chance to get on the coveted Next list, or even win, and one simple entry form is all it takes!'
The Award categories are:
Disruptive Innovation – groundbreaking products, services, technologies or business models designed with sustainability and circular economy principles at their core.
Transformational Leadership – visionary leaders (individuals or teams) championing long-term, transformational changes towards a regenerative circular economy.
Entries close on 27 June 2025. The winners will be announced at a celebration in November.

RNZ recognised at Radio and Podcast Awards

RNZ's Alexa Cook won best journalist, and reporter Kate Green was awarded best new journalist. RNZ's journalism was also recognised for best team coverage on the sinking of the HMNZS Manawanui . RNZ was also a finalist in the category for its coverage of the Tangi of Kiingi Tuheitia. RNZ won five podcast categories, including best podcast producer or producing team. The Detail , a Newsroom production for RNZ, again picked up best news and current affairs podcast. Nellie's Baby , a hit podcast by RNZ investigative journalist Kirsty Johnston, won best society and culture podcast. In the radio categories, Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking was awarded best talk presenter, ahead of stablemate Heather du Plessis, RNZ's Lisa Owen for Checkpoint and Morning Report' s Corin Dann and Ingrid Hipkiss. Sunday Morning host Jim Mora was recognised for services to broadcasting. Newstalk ZB won network station of the year and More FM Northland won local station of the year. Auckland Hospitality Scene Stands Strong: Lewisham Awards Demonstrate Resilience Of Auckland's Hospitality Scene

Nicola Richards of Monsoon Poon honored. Resilience and innovations was on show as Auckland Hospitality's best came together on Sunday night for the annual Lewisham Awards. Finalists, judges and guests packed out the Viaduct Events Centre for an evening of recognition and celebration with a time travellers theme. The makers of the city's best cocktail, cafe lattes and mince pies, assembled to acknowledge the achievements of the past year. 'Hospitality has continued to be challenging,' observers Dan Sullivan, Chairperson of the Awards Committee. 'That hasn't stopped innovation, dedication and ultimately success in this creative commercial industry'. Karangahape Road establishments featured heavily with a double win for Apero for best Chef and Wine, best central establishment for pasta restaurant Pici, as well as the emerging talent award for the cult following of Pie Rolla. Further off the beaten track were wins from Westhaven Marina located First Mates, Last Laughs for best new establishment, founded by Judith Tabron of Soul Bar fame, as well as Avondale based Tokos Tacos for best West Auckland establishment. Nicola Richards, owner of Monsoon Poon was honoured with the Hospitality Hero award, the popular Southeast Asian restaurant closed it's doors after almost 20 years of trading in early May. 'As an industry we're seeing hospitality owners demonstrate an understanding and application of community and connection. Not only are they creating memorable experiences, they're delivering them in such a way that guests want to come back to share it with others.' says Sullivan. Highlights: 23 May, 2025 – SYOS Aerospace took out the top honour at the 2025 NZ Hi-Tech Awards tonight, being named the PwC Hi-Tech Company of the Year. A near record number of attendees in excess of 1000+ came together to celebrate as the Awards marked its 30th anniversary at the TSB Arena in Wellington, which was also attended by a record number of Government Ministers. Mount Maunganui based SYOS Aerospace made a stand out impression on the exclusive panel of international judges with them commenting. ' The company sells its products to government and commercial customers for security, border patrol, surveillance, disaster response, delivery, logistics support, agriculture, and environmental monitoring. The company has shown that you can build big things in small – and pleasant – places. They have made the 'jump' overseas that is critical to getting Kiwi companies to global scale.' Other big winners were The Village Goldsmith and Mindhive Global who both took out two categories each. Mindhive Global who won both the Start-up category and the Agritech category made a significant impact on the judges with their unique combination of known, trusted technology. Their proprietary vision system detects over 25 types of defects in cowhides within seconds, combining machine learning, image recognition, and industrial hardware in a way that's both technically robust and commercially viable. The Village Goldsmith is also disrupting a long-standing industry with its development of a unique platform that allows diamonds to float without visible prongs, claws, or clasps, an innovation recognised globally as the most significant change in diamond solitaire ring design since 1886. Sir Peter Beck was recognised as the 2025 Flying Kiwi and inducted into the NZ Hi-Tech Hall of Fame for taking his company Rocket Lab, from a start-up some 20 years ago to the multi-billion dollar company it is today. At the same time, actively contributing to the development of the Kiwi aerospace industry and personally investing in a number of home-grown start-ups More than 80 local and international judges contributed to the judging of the NZ Hi-Tech Awards which continues to see a year-on-year increase in submissions with an increasingly high calibre to match.
