Kolkata: The 26-year-old MBA second-year student, accused of raping a young psychologist on the B-school campus in Kolkata, has stressed before cops, counsel and his family that he was innocent and whatever happened was "consensual".
"We believe the youth has been framed. Whatever the cops have now are only allegations made once by the woman. Majority of the facts mentioned in the complaint do not tally with the evidence the cops have collected so far, and the woman too hasn't come forward since then with more information and clarity in this case. Also, the woman's father has said no sexual assault happened. Hence, we believe the youth is innocent and have complete faith in the judiciary," said his counsel, Kanishk Ravindran, on Monday.
The youth, who scored 99.7 percentile in data interpretation and logical reasoning in the CAT (Common Admission Test) in 2022, completed engineering from Bengaluru and was initially pursuing a PG course from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade before he dropped out and took admission at the Kolkata B-school in June 2024.

"He is a bright student. He stresses he is innocent but has gone into depression, concerned over his studies, exams, and the impact the arrest would have on his career. The case was presented in the same lines of the crimes at RG Kar Medical College and a law college in Kolkata. But this is an entirely different case. The student here met the woman on a dating app, and Friday was only the second time they were meeting. A thorough police investigation will prove that my client is innocent," Ravindran added.

Five Indian-Americans have been charged in Nebraska with sex trafficking, visa fraud, and money laundering involving over $565,000 (approximately ₹5 crore) amid Trump's immigration crackdown and ongoing raids in major US cities. Ten juveniles were rescued from a labor trafficking network that compelled youngsters under the age of 12 to work long hours in filthy, dangerous, and unhygienic hotels for little to no pay, according to court filings. The US Attorney's Office, District of Nebraska, revealed the names of the Indian-Americans, which include Amit Prahladbhai 'Amit' Chaudhari, 32, Amit Babubhai 'Matt' Chaudhari, 33, Maheshkumar 'Mahesh' Chaudhari, 38, Rashmi Ajit 'Falguni' Samani, 42, and Kentakumar 'Ken' Chaudhari, 36, owned, ran, and oversaw several hotels in the state. In a press release, US state attorney Lesley Woods stated that the businesses produced significant illicit profits, and authorities seized over $565,000 in cash that may have been used in money laundering. Ten minors rescued Ten juveniles were rescued from a labor trafficking network that compelled youngsters under the age of 12 to work long hours in filthy, dangerous, and unhygienic hotels for little to no pay, according to court filings. Citing one instance, the Department of Justice, revealed that an informant went into a hotel room and discovered immigrant victims dozing on the floor while cockroaches crawled over them. 'There is no evil greater than the evil that seeks to trap, oppress, and exploit human beings for profit or pleasure,' said Woods in the statement. 'Where that evil exists, Nebraska law enforcement working together at the federal, state, and local levels, as occurred in this case, will seek it, find it, root it out, and ensure every rescued victim has an opportunity to obtain justice and freedom from their captors.' A hotel owner allegedly orchestrated a fictitious robbery of a Brow and Lash salon in 2022 to portray another suspect as a victim of crime in an effort to obtain a U visa for her. The hotels were also allegedly utilised for narcotics trafficking, according to the complaint. The hotel owners provided security to traffickers, just as they did for human traffickers, the DOJ said. In previous years, a number of hotel workers had crossed the Arizona border knowing they would be staying at defendant-owned hotels. ‘Wilful attack to injure my wife': Father of RG Kar victim blames police

Three days after the 'Nabanna Abhijan' called by the parents of the R G Kar rape-murder victim, the deceased doctor's father has filed a police complaint alleging attack on his wife by Kolkata Police personnel. Filing an online complaint on Monday, he requested that police treat it as an FIR. The complaint stated: '(She) was attacked by Kolkata Police personnel without any provocation when we were taking part in a peaceful protest march on August 9. We had started walking from Esplanade Dorina Crossing at 1.15 pm… When we reached the Kyd Street-Jawaharlal Nehru Road Crossing at around 2 pm, a group of policemen dragged my wife by holding her right hand — because of which the white conch shell bangle (shankha in Bengali) was broken. Then she was attacked… and a policeman hit her badly on her head and upper back with a baton.' According to him, the attack was 'deliberate' and 'premeditated' with the motive 'to cause serious injury… which could have even led to her death.' The letter added that she suffered head trauma, was admitted to hospital, underwent a CT scan, and is now recuperating at home. On August 9, the first death anniversary of the victim of the rape and murder at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, the parents led a protest rally demanding justice. Police used tear gas and resorted to lathi charge.

Gujarat high court refers IIM-A student re-admission dispute to mediation

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court on Tuesday referred to mediation a dispute between the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) and a student seeking re-admission to the its Post-Graduate Programme (PGP) course after his admission was cancelled two years ago. The petitioner, R Shri Vignesh, had cracked the Common Admission Test (CAT) in Dec 2021 after completing his BTech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), and joined IIM-A in July 2022. His admission was conditional on producing his undergraduate marksheets and degree certificate by Dec 2022. When IIT-M did not issue his documents on time, Vignesh sought more time. IIM-A extended the deadline to Sep 2023, but the documents still did not arrive. On Sep 14, 2023, IIMA cancelled his admission. His plea was rejected. He approached the Gujarat high court, which in turn asked IIM-A to reconsider. On March 28, 2025, IIMA again refused. This brought Vignesh back to the high court. After a preliminary hearing, Justice Nikhil Kariel stated, "It would prima facie appear to this court that both the sides may have been justified in their respective stands..." The court said that the student has completed nearly 70% of the programme and his case should have been considered differently. On the other hand, IIM-A gave numerous extensions to the student for submission of documents. Yet, the admission process was not completed by the petitioner. The court further stated that the litigation is not of an adversarial nature, and by acceding to the student's request, the time invested by IIM-A in the student would be fruitful. "Therefore, at this stage, referring the present petition to the mediation committee attached to the high court may be the best course of action," the high court said, while directing the mediation committee to assign a senior mediator to resolve the dispute. The high court has posted further hearing six weeks later after it receives the report from the mediator. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
