
It's time to stop the great food heist powered by big business. That means taxation, regulation and healthy school meals
Malnutrition in all its forms – undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, overweight and obesity – is by far the biggest cause of ill-health, affecting one in three people on the planet. Ultra-processed foods are implicated in as many as one in seven premature deaths in some countries.
Every country is affected by malnutrition but it is the poorest, most marginalised people who are most likely to become malnourished, get sick and die too soon. Our food system is also sickening our planet – generating a third of all greenhouse gas emissions and driving a raft of environmental harms.
As economies grow, countries move from rural, low-productivity agricultural systems – focused on staples – to more diversified systems, including legumes and nutrient-rich foods, and on to commercialised systems, inundated with ultra-processed foods.
The global north started to move through this dietary transition in the middle of the last century – about three generations ago. Many countries in Latin America and Asia have made the same journey in just one generation and Africa is now becoming more obese as it switches to ultra-processed foods.
The global food system has been captured by a few rapacious transnational companies that profit from public ill-health while using an array of tactics to stop governments getting in their way. When viewed through the prism of power, this is more like a heist than a dietary transition.
We need to transform the system into one in which the health of people and planet is prioritised above the relentless drive for profit. It is too late for incremental change and yet more tweaking at the margins – we need a radical overhaul.
Everyone has a role in turning things around but we need governments to lead, to set the rules and to govern.
First, governments must have budgets to procure healthy foods (and limit ultra-processed foods) for schools, government agencies, hospitals and clinics. In Kenya, Food4Education has delivered more than 21m nutritious hot meals to schoolchildren. Tens of thousands of young children are fed well every day, keeping them in school and able to learn. The Kenyan government is working with the charity to scale its operations up to cover all schools by the end of the decade.
In Brazil, the government funds healthy meals for millions of pupils in public schools, a third of which have to be bought from local farmers who practise organic, low-carbon farming.
Momentum is building. School-meal plans now operate in nearly every country, reaching more than 400 million children at a cost of about $48bn a year, and 108 countries have come together in a global School Meals Coalition.
Second, governments have the power to regulate advertising, labelling and marketing of unhealthy ultra-processed foods.
For Guido Girardi, a senator in Chile, it was simple: children's right to food and health was being violated by the predatory marketing of ultra-processed foods. From 2006 to 2022, Girardi struggled against the food industry and fellow politicians to bring in regulation. But Chile now leads the world in terms of a comprehensive package of measures that include front-of-pack labels, restrictions on media marketing to children, 18% taxes on sugary drinks and a ban on the sale and marketing of junk food in schools.
A 2018 New York Times headline proclaimed the slaying of Tony the Tiger as cartoon characters were taken off cereal packs in Chile. Within a year, driven by these new laws, children's exposure to ads had dropped by 73%. Within three years, consumption of calories, salt and sugar from regulated products across the country had fallen by a third. Front-of-pack nutrition labels are now on products in Peru, Israel, Mexico, Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil and Colombia, with others in the pipeline in Africa and Asia.
The third action required concerns taxes and subsidies. Governments can disincentivise buying unhealthy foods (through taxing harmful products) while earmarking tax dividends to incentivise healthier food purchases, such as subsidies for low-income families.
In Mexico, the idea of introducing a tax on sugary drinks had been debated for several years in the 2010s, after the public health catastrophe of the presidency of Vicente Fox, a former chief executive of Coca-Cola in Latin America. In a classic case of the revolving door between public office and the private sector, Fox had brought in his Coca-Cola pals to run key departments in 2000. Coca-Cola's sales went into overdrive after bottling concessions were tripled and water was sucked out of aquifers.
By 2006, one in six adults in Mexico had diabetes, with 40,000 deaths a year attributed to over-consumption of soft drinks. Despite strong pushback from the drinks industry, in 2014 a new government launched the world's first tax on sugary drinks. Two years later, sales of these drinks were down 12%, while water sales went up by a similar percentage. The biggest benefit was seen in the poorest households.
Taxes work. More than 120 countries covering more than half the world's population have started implementing them. It is a huge global success story that is now being extended beyond sugary drinks. Colombia was the first country in Latin America to introduce a tax on ultra-processed products, in November 2023. These interventions work, and when they are joined up in a comprehensive national policy, supported by multiple government departments, they can be transformative.
Our global food system is not nourishing us. The good news is we now know why, and we know enough to turn things around. We need to harness the growing body of evidence and experience from around the world to propel us forward into a better food future – one with people and planet at its heart.

Walmart recalls potentially radioactive shrimp sold in 13 US states
Walmart has recalled frozen, raw shrimp sold in 13 states because federal health officials say it could have potential radioactive contamination. The US Food and Drug Administration asked Walmart to pull three lots of Great Value brand frozen shrimp from stores after federal officials detected Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in shipping containers and a sample of breaded shrimp imported from Indonesia. The products could pose a 'potential health concern' for people exposed to low levels of Cesium-137 over time, FDA officials said. 'If you have recently purchased raw frozen shrimp from Walmart that matches this description, throw it away,' FDA officials said in a statement. The risk from the recalled shrimp is 'quite low', said Donald Schaffner, a food safety expert at Rutgers University. Cesium-137 is a byproduct of nuclear reactions, including nuclear bombs, testing, reactor operations and accidents. It's widespread around the world, with trace amounts found in the environment, including soil, food and air. The level detected in the frozen breaded shrimp was far lower than FDA intervention levels. However, the agency said that avoiding potentially contaminated products could reduce exposure to low-level radiation that could lead to health problems over time. The FDA is investigating reports of Cesium-137 contamination in shipping containers and products processed by PT Bahari Makmur Sejati, doing business as BMS Foods of Indonesia. US Customs and Border Protection officials alerted FDA that they found Cesium-137 in shipping containers sent to US ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Miami and Savannah, Georgia. FDA officials collected several product samples and detected contamination in one sample of frozen breaded shrimp. The shipping containers and products were denied entry into the US However, the FDA then learned that Walmart had received potentially affected products imported after the first detection, from shipments that did not trigger contamination alerts. Walmart immediately recalled the products, a company spokesperson said. They include Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp with lot codes 8005540-1, 8005538-1 and 8005539-1, all with best-by dates of 15 March 2027. The shrimp was sold in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia. Consumers should discard the products or return them to any Walmart store for refund.

Fact Check: Statement from Namibian president rejecting Gates Foundation contraceptives trial is fake
Online claims that the Namibian president released a statement rejecting a proposal by the Gates Foundation to conduct trials of a contraceptive device are false. The claims followed an August 4 announcement, opens new tab by the Gates Foundation committing $2.5 billion to 'accelerate research and development on women's health' by 2030. This includes 'contraceptive innovation' and a focus on low- and middle-income countries, Reuters reported. An August 11 Facebook post, opens new tab attributed an 'official statement' to President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah rejecting a supposed Gates Foundation proposal to conduct trials of a hormonal intrauterine device, designed to prevent pregnancy for up to eight years. 'Any attempt to hinder or suppress the growth of human potential in Namibia constitutes a grave injustice to our people and their future,' read the statement attributed to Nandi-Ndaitwah. TikTok posts, opens new tab made the same claim on August 12. On August 11, the X account linked to the Namibian presidency's official website labelled a screenshot, opens new tab of one of these posts as 'fake.' The presidency did not respond to Reuters' request for comment. The Gates Foundation told Reuters that it is 'not undertaking any H-IUD (hormonal intrauterine device) work in Namibia,' but that it does 'work with partners to expand access to trusted, voluntary options like H-IUDs in other countries.' The foundation added that the quote attributed to the president was 'fabricated,' saying that the presidency has 'dismissed the claims as unfounded,' referring to the post by the presidency's X account. Reuters found no statement rejecting any such trials published on the Namibian presidency's official website or associated social media channels. False. The Namibian president did not publicly reject a proposal by the Gates Foundation to conduct contraceptive trials. New snake species found capable of injecting venom even after death – with no loss of potency
Deadly snake species like cobras and kraits in India can still inject venom even after the animal has died, according to a new study. Until now the ability to posthumously inject venom was thought to be limited to a select group of snake species including American rattlesnakes, copperheads, Asian and sub-Saharan spitting cobras, and Australia's red-bellied black snakes. But a new study by scientists in India's eastern state of Assam, published in the journal Frontiers in Tropical Disease, has confirmed that Indian monocled cobras and kraits can also inject venom hours after their death. The research team, led by Susmita Thakur of Namrup College in Assam, documented three such incidents: two involving monocled cobras (Naja kaouthia) and one involving a black krait (Bungarus lividus). All cases were reported to rural health centres in Assam. In the first case, a 45-year-old man encountered a snake attacking chickens in his house and killed it by beheading. However, while trying to discard the body, he was bitten by the decapitated snake's head on his right thumb. 'The bite was followed by severe pain at the bite site, radiating up to his shoulder. He reported to the nearby community hospital,' the researchers wrote. On the way to the hospital, the 45-year-old experienced repeated vomiting and 'unbearable pain', while the bite site began to blacken, the researchers noted. A timely photograph taken of the snake helped doctors identify the bite as that of a monocled cobra. Doctors at the hospital administered intravenous antivenom along with paracetamol for pain relief. 'The pain significantly decreased following this treatment. The patient did not develop any symptoms of neurotoxicity,' the researchers noted. The patient was discharged after 20 days, with regular follow-ups for wound care. In the second case, a man working in a paddy field unknowingly ran over a monocled cobra with his tractor. But when he got off the tractor after work, the snake, presumed dead, bit him on the foot. 'The patient complained of severe pain, progressive swelling, and noticeable colour change at the bite site,' scientists wrote, adding that he experienced two episodes of vomiting in the hospital, consistent with signs of envenomation. Although the patient showed no signs of neurotoxicity, the bite resulted in an ulcer, the researchers noted. 'Despite being crushed and presumed to be dead for several hours, the snake was capable of delivering a venomous bite, requiring antivenom treatment along with extended wound care,' they wrote. In the third reported incident, a black snake entered a house, where it was killed and its body discarded in the backyard. A neighbour who came to see the snake later picked it up by the head and was bitten on the little finger of his right hand. Within hours, the neighbour began experiencing difficulty swallowing and developed drooping eyelids. Doctors identified the dead snake, brought to the hospital along with the patient, as a black krait (Bungarus lividus). 'The victim was envenomated by a snake that had been dead for 3 hours,' the scientists wrote. Despite being given 20 vials of polyvalent antivenom, the patient remained unresponsive, and his condition worsened. 'He gradually became unresponsive to verbal commands,' researchers wrote. The patient's condition improved after 43 hours of respiratory support, and he was discharged from the hospital in 'good health' after six days at the hospital, the scientists wrote. Based on these cases, researchers warned that even after sustaining fatal injuries some snakes can still inject venom, potentially leading to severe complications. They observed that this ability persists because of the unique structural organisation of the venom apparatus in front-fanged snakes. 'The venom gland consists of a large basal lumen for storage of secreted venom, which is connected to a long hollow fang,' the researchers wrote. Envenoming may occur if the venom gland of a dead snake is accidentally pressed while handling its severed head. 'In the cases highlighted here, such envenomings lead to clinical symptoms comparable to those produced by live snakes,' the scientists warned.
