Glasgow college to deliver net zero skills and tackle poverty

'In Glasgow,' says Joanna Campbell, 'we've got some of the highest levels of unemployment in Scotland and we have a need to get people out of poverty. Plus we've got the grand challenges of our regional economy – productivity, inclusive growth, climate change.'
'If,' she says, 'you think about the technology and the industries that are going to support Scotland's drive to becoming net zero, then actually right now the college has a role to play in helping people develop those skills.'
Campbell, who stepped into the role following the retirement of Derek Smeall, has already pioneered environmental leadership in education in her previous role as principal at Dumfries and Galloway College, where she led the institution to three UK Green Gown Awards for exceptional sustainability initiatives during her six-year tenure.
Her focus now is on aligning education with Glasgow's economic and environmental ambitions. Net zero will be a core priority for Glasgow Kelvin, as is tackling child poverty. With campuses serving some of the most economically challenged communities in Scotland – in areas such as Springburn and Easterhouse – Campbell sees the college as having a central role in 'improving life chances'.
It is about getting, as she describes 'people out of impoverished situations to become highly productive members of the workforce' and also tackling the climate emergency.
It also aims to deliver education that 'develops the skills that we're going to need for the future to support the jobs and roles that we're going to have in our society'
40% of college education in Scotland is delivered in Glasgow, and 20 % of that is delivered by Glasgow Kelvin College. Glasgow Kelvin College was formed from the merger of three colleges in 2013, and named after the scientist Lord Kelvin to indicate its intent to promote engineering and scientific education programmes.
The college has already itself won a Green Gown award for a pioneering sustainable fashion initiative and is home to a Green Academy – a dedicated training facility focused on low-carbon heating systems such as air-source heat pumps.

Glasgow Kelvin, Campbell says, can provide 'opportunity for those people who are furthest away from the labour market by offering them not just the courses that you would expect a college to put on, like HNDs or national qualifications but actually taster programmes, bite-sized learning and we can do that in the community as well as doing it in our three campuses as well.'.
But delivering this is going to be difficult in a cash-strapped sector. 'One of the things,' she says, 'I want to get across is that we work in a sector where we've had flat cash and we have already reduced our student activity by 8% because of those funding challenges and we've reduced our workforce by about 12% to meet the challenges of funding.'
Funding is particularly important, in terms of poverty and inequality, since, Campbell says, the college has 'proportionately higher than any other college in supporting the most deprived communities in Scotland'. 38% of its enrolments are from areas in the most deprived 10% in Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD).

'Any reduction in our funding," she says, "has a real impact on our ability to be able to support that. And when you think about the fact that we are working with 45 community learning and development partners and as well as what we're doing in our three campuses we're actually operating across 32 locations in the community and delivering training within those locations to about 4000 learners.
"That's significant. We need the system to recognise the scale of impact colleges make – particularly when we have seen a 17% drop in funding since 2021/22.'
Colleges, however, she observes, are used to adapting and agile as organisations. 'We had the last set of reforms in 2010 where we went from 43 colleges to 24 and became regional colleges and had regional boards we managed to navigate our way through that. I'm not saying it was easy but we did it. But I think the thing that we're not seeing at the moment is we're not seeing a sense of urgency to address this. We talk about reform but we've yet to see that materialise.'
The kind of changes needed to deliver net zero are also not, she pointed out, going to be delivered just by looking at curriculum alone.

'You have to embed that,' she says, 'into the organisational DNA, the culture of the organisation. That's one of the things I managed to do in my previous role. It wasn't just about what can we do to develop the skills to tackle climate change, but actually how can we embed it into our practices because we need to role model that, not just teach.'
Campbell's background is in digital, as a former computing lecturer. 'It's not in climate at all. I'm not a scientist. I'm not an engineer. I'm none of those. But the reason it came about is because when I first went to work in Dumfries & Galloway, we had just secured a significant amount, £7 million, of funding from what was the precursor to South of Scotland Enterprise agency, to develop a green energy centre.'
In partnership with Borders college, and with additional funding from the Green Energy Fund, the college set up not just the centre, but a whole suite of programmes.
'If I'm honest some of the work I've left behind there was leading the college sector and they were very much seen as being the trailblazer for some of the things we see now around green energy, training, offshore wind, onshore wind, just starting to touch on hydrogen production and the curriculum that goes to support that. I think they were ahead of their time.'
There is, Campbell says, one golden thread through her work in both colleges. 'It's the workforce, it's all employers whether you're in Dumfries & Galloway, Glasgow, Edinburgh, right now what employers are feeding back is that the challenges that they have now are workforce and skills deficits. Any college in Scotland is very much deeply rooted in the community that it serves, and also our heritage is providing skills for the economies that are in and around us – and particularly in Scotland where we have that place-based approach that the government has very much focussed on.'
Campbell says she was drawn to Glasgow Kelvin because of its clear sense of mission and values, describing it as an institution rooted in its communities and committed to transforming lives through education.
'This college has a clear mission – to serve some of the most deprived communities in Scotland, and to do so in a way that is bold, inclusive and future-facing. It's a purpose I feel deeply connected to. I can see clear alignment between that mission and the transformational work already being done.'

Canned soup summer: Bargain hunters are ditching snacks for pantry staples

The humble bowl of soup is having a moment. That's according to The Campbell's Co., whose iconic cans are synonymous with it. The food maker said Monday that customers are increasingly snatching up its condensed soups and mac-and-cheese offerings while shying away from snacks, a spending shift that partly echoes the depths of the pandemic. 'Consumers are cooking at home at the highest levels since early 2020,' Campbell's CEO Mick Beekhuizen said in a statement. The company — whose snack brands include Goldfish, Snyder's of Hanover pretzels and Cape Cod chips — saw snack sales slip 5% in the last three months. Meanwhile, sales of its meals and beverages rose 6%, mainly driven by Rao's pasta sauces and soup sales in the United States. While consumers' outlooks have improved somewhat in recent weeks, many remain deeply pessimistic about the direction of the economy under President Donald Trump's ever-shifting trade war and are looking for bargains. Households continue to 'focus their spending on products that help them stretch their food budgets, and they're increasingly intentional about their discretionary snack purchases,' Beekhuizen told Campbell's investors on its earnings call. 'Snacks are losing ground as consumers, squeezed by inflation, shift spending toward essentials and more purposeful food choices,' analysts at the market research firm NIQ wrote in a recent note. 'The era of indulgent, impulsive snacking is giving way to a demand for value, quality, and health.' In a recent NIQ survey, 42% of consumers reported buying snacks less, and 37% said they're searching harder for deals. Many indicated they've been thinking twice about pricier name-brand snacks, opting instead for more generic alternatives at convenience stores or those sold under supermarkets' own private labels. Snacks are losing ground as consumers, squeezed by inflation, shift spending toward essentials. NIQ market researchers The tightening snack market has seen some friction, with Oreo maker Mondelēz recently suing Aldi, alleging the supermarket operator had 'blatantly' mimicked some of its packaging designs for cheaper riffs on iconic snack brands. While Mondelēz says snack demand remains sturdy, PepsiCo — which makes Lay's and Doritos chips — has said it's finding success catering to customers at lower price points. 'Relative to where we were three months ago, we probably aren't feeling as good about the consumer now as we were a few months ago,' PepsiCo CFO Jamie Caulfield said in April. The snack foods giant also lowered its financial forecast for the year. Food shoppers' hunt for value is also boosting Dollar General, which Tuesday increased its sales outlook for the year and said it picked up market share in food products. The dollar store operator notched those gains even as other retail giants, such as Target, that sell groceries have struggled to lure budget-conscious shoppers. The growing focus on home cooking comes as costs of dining out are rising nearly twice as fast as grocery prices. Meals out were up 3.9% in April from a year earlier, federal data show, while at-home food prices rose just 2% over the same period, slower than inflation overall. That divergence helps explain why many restaurant chains are seeing weaker sales. McDonald's last month reported its biggest same-store sales decline since the pandemic, with that measure falling 3.6% during the first quarter. Darden Restaurants, which owns Olive Garden, also flagged weaker-than-expected sales around the start of the year, and Chipotle reported its same-store sales contracted for the first time since 2020. McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski said all but its most affluent diners are increasingly staying away from the burger chain, despite the past year's efforts to counter its earlier menu price hikes with value meals. Traffic from low-income consumers was down 'nearly double digits' compared to a year ago, with middle-income diners' visits slowing 'nearly as much,' he said. Kempczinski said the split illustrated a 'divided' economy in which moderately and less well-off consumers 'are being weighed down by the cumulative impact of inflation and heightened anxiety about the economic outlook.' In the meantime, restaurant operators are doing what they can to try to juice sales. Some are leaning into customers' growing appetite for chicken, refreshing their locations with sleek new looks, or both. These efforts could prove an uphill battle against the grocery aisle, where the costs of some key purchases, like eggs, are finally easing. But there are still signs of strain at supermarket checkouts as shoppers adjust to higher overall costs for many of the fridge and pantry basics they can't easily do without. More shoppers are both financing their grocery purchases with installment loans and falling behind on those bills, a recent LendingTree survey found. One such 'buy now, pay later' service, Klarna, said recently that its borrowers are having a tougher time clearing their debts on the platform. Months earlier, the company became Walmart's exclusive BNPL provider and teamed up with DoorDash to offer installment loans for takeout meals.

Angus Campbell, from Harris, is one of 15 fishers to be issued a commercial licence to catch bluefin tuna, which are showing a 'heartening resurgence', according to the Marine Conservation Society. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Mr Campbell's threshold of three tonnes will be landed at Leverburgh, to the south of the island, which will open up fishing to the west of the Hebrides where he said the tuna are of a higher quality. The skipper had previously been restricted to Stornoway, on the east of Lewis, when he was given a licence two years ago. This, in turn, will make the catch more marketable to high end customers in the UK, but also markets in Tokyo where bluefin is highly sought after, he said. Angus Campbell's boat, Harmony, which is based out of Leverburgh | Katharine Hay Mr Campbell, who has held a catch-and-release licence for bluefin, which helps with research projects on the migratory fish, said he is 'very excited to be back in commercial fishing.' He said: 'Landing at Leverburgh gives us the opportunity to work out west and we are hoping to get a better quality of fish than was accessible when we could only land at Stornoway. We had it all set up last year but unfortunately didn't get a licence.' Mr Campbell, who also runs Kilda Cruises, operates the vessel 'Harmony' which can carry up to 12 passengers and is also used for angling trips. Demand for licences from around the UK was described as 'exceptionally high.' While bluefin have made a comeback to UK waters, particularly the English Channel and the southwest coast of England, catching them for commercial purposes is limited for conservation reasons. Duncan Macinnes, secretary of the Western Isles Fishermen's Association, said the licence for Leverburgh will 'give flexibility to the grounds where we know larger tuna are migrating to.' He added: 'We have been saying for years that there is potential for a well-managed tuna fishery in the Outer Hebrides which could have a real economic impact. 'This is an important step towards that and the fact that landings can take place at Leverburgh as well as Stornoway is a really significant development'. He took part in the Glasgow-founded education initiative and it was so successful that two students from the programme have secured internships at his growing architecture firm, HOKO. Now the 33-year-old is hoping others follow suit and begin helping out in the START programme too. START is a project-based learning programme for final year school students that attempts to harness the tools and mindsets of design, entrepreneurship and storytelling to bring the experience of participating in a startup to Scottish schools. It was launched by the High School of Glasgow and it is set to expand to more than 12 schools later this year. The ideas, energy and ambition these young people brought to the table were incredible. 'A lot of people think you're there to teach – but I learned just as much. Seeing business through their eyes reminded me why I started in the first place. It's a two-way street: you help them, and they absolutely help you. It's access to a younger perspective, a new mindset, fresh energy and the chance to play a role in someone's first steps towards building a business.' START Founder, Phil Ford, said: 'START is all about inspiring the next generation of business leaders and innovators. It encourages young people to draw on their own experiences and passions to identify real-world problems and to then solve them by creating new products or services which they pitch in a 'pre-seed investment round' to industry experts. 'We've witnessed the programme igniting entrepreneurial ambition in school leavers with 98% of this year's cohort saying that participating in START has encouraged them to consider starting a business in the future. 'A huge part of the confidence instilled in pupils is thanks to exposure to founders via the mentoring aspect of the programme. There's no better way to feel equipped with the necessary skills and mindsets to be an entrepreneur than by spending time with one: getting under the bonnet of a startup and learning what it takes to build a business first-hand. The pupils at John Paul Academy were helped immensely by Danny's insight, knowledge and enthusiasm and I watched them flourish under his counsel.' Mr Campbell added: 'The team at John Paul Academy completely threw themselves into the challenge. I'm excited to have one of them join HOKO this summer — they really earned it. 'They were sharp, motivated, full of ideas, and I've no doubt they'll bring something new to the team ''We often talk about building future talent pipelines — this is how you do it. You open the door earlier. You build relationships that last. You give people a chance. 'This isn't about criticising the system, it's about creating more routes in. 'As a dad of three young boys, their futures and education is something I think about a lot, and I am actively encouraging an entrepreneurial mindset already. 'Not everyone's path will be university. And that's OK. We need a landscape where young people see multiple routes to success — whether that's higher education, apprenticeships, starting their own thing or joining a growing business to get real world experience. 'As business leaders, we have something to offer. We have something to gain too. A half-day spent mentoring could change someone's life. But it could also spark something in you.'
