The San Francisco 49ers continue to take hit after hit to their depth in training camp, but instead of another injury, this loss is on the player, as wide receiver Demarcus Robinson has been suspended three games by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy, stemming from his DUI back in January. Amari Cooper Cooper, 31, was a first-round pick of the Las Vegas (then Oakland) Raiders in the 2015 NFL draft after an impressive collegiate career at Alabama that included an All-American final season. In his 10 professional seasons, he's caught 711 passes for 10,033 yards and 64 touchdowns, making five Pro Bowls in the process. However, he had just 44 receptions for 547 yards and four scores in 2024 with the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills. Tyler Boyd Boyd, 30, was a second-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2016 NFL draft after three years at Pittsburgh, where he earned All-ACC honors every year. In nine seasons, he's caught 552 passes for 6,390 yards and 31 touchdowns. However, he had one of the worst seasons of his career in 2024, recording 39 receptions for 390 yards with the Tennessee Titans. Gabe Davis Davis, 26, played collegiately at UCF from 2017-19, earning All-AAC honors twice and All-American honors once before the Buffalo Bills took him in the fourth round (No. 128 overall) of the 2020 NFL draft. He spent four seasons in Buffalo, hauling in 163 receptions for 2,730 yards and 27 touchdowns in 64 games. After landing a three-year, $39 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he appeared in just 10 games, catching 20 passes for 239 yards and two scores before tearing his meniscus and missing the rest of the season. Jacksonville released him in May. Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham, 32, was a first-round selection of the New York Giants in the 2014 NFL draft out of LSU, where he earned All-SEC and All-American honors in 2013. In 10 professional seasons, he's recorded 575 receptions for 7,987 yards and 59 touchdowns while making two All-Pro teams and three Pro Bowls. The Super Bowl champion struggled to do anything in 2024 with the Miami Dolphins, catching just nine passes for 55 yards in nine games. Nelson Agholor Agholor, 32, entered the NFL as the Philadelphia Eagles' first-round pick (No. 20 overall) in the 2015 draft following a college career at USC that saw him earn All-Pac-12 honors twice. In his 10 seasons in the league, he's caught 389 passes for 4,858 yards and 37 touchdowns in 149 games. Buoyed by quarterback's return, USF ready to take on daunting early schedule
It's either a gargantuan opportunity for the South Florida Bulls … or a cavernous hole that they will have to dig out of after the first three weeks of the 2025 football season. Here's why: USF's first three games are at home against Boise State, which went 12-2 last year and made the College Football Playoffs; and then on the road against Florida and Miami, who combined to go 18-8. But the Bulls aren't backing down. Alex Golesh, who has gone 7-6 with a bowl win in each of his first two years as USF's coach, said he is aiming much higher this year. 'Sometimes the progress made doesn't immediately show up in the record,' Golesh said at the American Athletic Conference Media Day news conference. 'But I'm proud of what we've built at USF, and I think we're ready to take the next step.' Golesh is thrilled by the return of quarterback Byrum Brown, who played just five games last season before he was lost to a leg injury. However, in 12 games in 2023, Brown completed 64.6% of his passes for a program-record 3,292 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. But what makes Brown even more dynamic is his elite running ability. In 2023, he led USF in rushing yards (809) and touchdowns (11). As for the rest of the team, USF's top running back is Cartevious Norton, a 5-11, 225-pound battering ram who has played two years at Iowa State (where he started seven games) and one at Charlotte. For his career, he has rushed for 1,180 yards, a 3.9 average and 12 touchdowns. USF's offensive line returns four starters, including pro prospect Zane Herring at right guard. The Bulls also added two experienced transfers. Keshaun Singleton — who came on late last season and finished with 26 catches — is USF's top wide receiver, and he gets high grades for his hands and his playmaking ability. Receiver, though, could be an area of concern overall. On defense, the Bulls are aggressive. They were solid against the run last year, but they were the second-worst AAC defense against the pass (279 yards per game). This year's defense will be led by veteran lineman Josh Celiscar, 23, a sixth-year player who is married with a daughter. In other words, he's a grown man, and he previously played for UCF and Texas A&M. Linebacker is the strength of the defense, including Mac Harris, who is ranked the fourth-best pro prospect in the AAC. In 2024, he led USF in tackles (82) and stops for losses (12). Other experienced linebackers are Jhalyn Singer; Rico Watson III; and North Texas transfer Chavez Brown. The kicker is Nico Gramatica, the son of Martin Gramatica, who won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay and also made the Pro Bowl in 2000. Nico, ranked the top kicking recruit in the Class of 2024, went 3 for 5 on field goals as a freshman last season. He will be the full-time starter this year. In total, the Bulls return six starters on offense and six on defense. 'It's all about developing players, building a team and finding a way to win,' Golesh said. 'We've put USF in a really good position.'

Is there anything better in the world than fall sports? If you know me, you know how much I love football. But there's another sport I also enjoy laying wagers on: soccer. Let's dive into what I'm eyeing at the moment. Big 12 teams to make College Football Playoff I just don't see a path for there to be multiple Big 12 teams in the Playoff. The conference is so balanced from one to say eight or nine, that the likelihood is we get a glut of 9-3 and 8-4 teams. It doesn't mean the league is bad; it just means it's balanced. In projecting the Playoff, I'm seeing Clemson and Miami from the ACC, the Big 12 champ, the Group of Five representative and Notre Dame. That's five spots right there, leaving seven for the Big Ten and SEC, which seems right — and coincidentally, what the math added up to last year. PICK: Under 1.5 Big 12 teams (-135) to make CFP Tom Brady analyzes the challenges of today's college football landscape UTSA to win AAC, to reach CFP The Road Runners started slow last year, but QB Owen McCown and RB Robert Henry really got going later in the season. UTSA opens with Texas A&M and is a three-TD dog there, but if they can just hang in there, it will go a long way to establishing the public opinion of the team. The schedule is helpful as Tulane plays at home and could very easily be favored in every game after the opener at Kyle Field. UTSA is one of the rare G5 teams that can dominate at the line of scrimmage, especially on the offensive side of the ball. There's a good chance this team is in the AAC title game, and if you look around the college football landscape, I expect the MWC to take a step back this year, which potentially opens up the G5 berth to the AAC winner. ADVERTISEMENT PICK: UTSA (+500) to win AAC, to reach CFP (+1400) Manchester United Under 59.5 points United is coming off a lost year in Ruben Amorim's first season at Old Trafford, with 42 points, a -10 goal differential and a 15th-place finish in the table. They were closer to relegation than they were to a Champions League spot. United managed just 44 goals in 38 games and went hard in the transfer window to address that, bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and then Benjamin Sesko from Leipzig. But the issues are a bit deeper here than just on the field. There is a lot of off-the-pitch angst from fans and employees. After winning just seven of 19 home games last year, an opener against Arsenal could go a long way in saying things will be different this year — or just more of the same. The midfield still concerns me, as does the keeper, who has been known to let in a howler now and then. United won't be 42 points bad, but asking them to hit 60 seems like a lot.
