Pakistan's Naqvi says consulting India on Asia Cup 2026 schedule
The fate of this year's Asia Cup, which is to be hosted by India most likely in September, was thrown into uncertainty following the days-long military skirmish between India and Pakistan in May. Bilateral cricket has been suspended since 2013 between the traditional rivals, who play each other only in multi-team events as per an International Cricket Council arrangement.
Naqvi, who is also the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the country's interior minister, spoke to reporters after presiding over the ACC's annual general meeting in Dhaka. The ACC chief said all 25 members of the Asian body attended the meeting, some through video link, to discuss cricket in Asia.
'We are in consultations with the BCCI [about Asia Cup schedule] and hopefully we will resolve the [issues] very soon,' Naqvi said in response to a question.
When a reporter asked Naqvi whether the tournament will be held in the UAE, he said the ACC 'will announce it soon.'
Naqvi said it was 'a normal thing' for most ACC members to attend the meeting virtually, saying it isn't possible for the various heads of cricket boards to gather in one place due to their varying schedules.
In his opening statement, the ACC chief said the annual general meeting 'went very well.'
'We have all decided to work for cricket, none of us was [discussing] politics inside our organization,' Naqvi said.
Cricket matches between India and Pakistan draw in millions of television viewers worldwide and thousands to cricket stadiums around the world. India refused to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy this year and played all their matches, including the March 9 final, in Dubai.
India will host the women's 50-overs World Cup this year but Pakistan will play all their matches in Sri Lanka as per the ICC's arrangement.
India's head coach Gautam Gambhir is against playing Pakistan even in neutral venues but will follow whatever the BCCI decided, he said in May.

Pakistan PM takes notice of ‘unjustified delay' of cash reward, support for boxer Shahzaib Rind
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Information Minister Attaullah Tarar this week apologized to Karate champion Shahzaib Rind for the 'unjustified delay' of a monetary reward and financial support the fighter said the government had promised to provide him, sharing that the prime minister has taken 'serious notice' of the incident. Rind made history in September last year when he won the World Karate Combat Light Heavyweight Championship, beating Brazil's Luiz Victor Rocha in the final in Singapore. The remarkable feat made him the first person from Pakistan to win the world title. Following his achievement, Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari presented Rind a cheque of Rs100 million [$352,600] while as per reports, former federal minister Sardar Yaar Muhammad Rind announced he would give Rind 25 acres of land. Rind took to social media platform X on July 23, saying that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif promised him a sum of Rs5 million [$17,630] and Rs80 million [$282,080] to support his training camp and upcoming fights. However, the Pakistani fighter said it was 'all a lie, I never got a penny from them.' 'Dear Shahzeb, there seems to be some miscommunication,' Tarar wrote to Rind on X on Saturday. 'We sincerely apologize for this unjustified delay, sportsmen like you are our real heroes and we value your achievements.' The minister acknowledged that Rind had brought honor to the country and made everyone proud through his achievements. 'The Prime Minister has taken serious notice of this inordinate delay and rest assured, it will be sorted out immediately, inshallah [god willing],' Tarar added. Emailed job application supposedly from Xavi was bogus, Indian soccer federation says
India's soccer federation has dispelled speculation Xavi Hernández had applied to coach its national team, saying the job application it apparently received from the former Barcelona player was bogus. The All India Football Federation said Saturday that it had received emailed job applications from senders claiming to be Xavi and Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola, but that neither was genuine. Indian media reported that Xavi had applied for the role. Xavi has been without a team since being let go by Barcelona in June 2024. Guardiola, one of the top coaches in the sport, is under contract with City through June 2027. India is looking to replace Spanish coach Manolo Márquez after he left the position by mutual consent earlier this month following just one win in eight games and less than a year in the job.
