Paul Doyle: All the charges he now faces after Liverpool parade crash

Paul Doyle, 53, now faces 31 charges relating to the Liverpool parade crash in May, which saw 134 football fans injured. He is due to appear in court again ahead of trial
The alleged driver in the Liverpool parade horror crash now faces a total of 31 charges relating to 29 victims. Paul Doyle, 53, sobbed as the court heard how the youngest victims on the indictment were two baby boys aged just six and seven-months-old at the time.
Another six children aged 10 to 17-years-old were also injured in the ordeal. The oldest victim was a 77-year-old woman. Doyle, of Burghill Road, West Derby, is now charged with injuring eight children and 21 adults. The identities of the children are protected by a court anonymity order.
Doyle was originally charged with seven offences, but the court heard another 24 had since been added to the indictment. The 31 charges he faces include one of dangerous driving, one of affray, and 29 other GBH-related offences, including nine of causing GBH with intent, two of wounding with intent and 18 of attempted GBH.
He is scheduled to face a trial in November, but will appear at Liverpool crown court next month to enter a plea to all 31 counts. Merseyside Police said a total of 134 people were injured in the crash on May 26, as 1.5 million football fans had gathered to celebrate Liverpool FC winning the Premier League.
Fans had begun walking home after the celebrations when a Ford Galaxy Titanium began mowing down pedestrians on Water Street in Liverpool city centre. Police and fans swarmed the car in the aftermath and Doyle was arrested on suspicion of being the man behind the wheel of the vehicle.
Appearing in court via videolink from prison, Doyle wore a grey t-shirt and sat behind a desk with a notepad and pen in front of him during the short 20 minute hearing on Thursday. The court heard that Doyle had made an application to have a laptop in prison in order to watch video evidence of the crash.
But two months after making the application, Doyle had still not been given an answer, the court was told. Judge Andrew Menary adjourned the proceedings to September to give Doyle's barrister time to go through the new charges with the defendant. Kick It Out: Black players may look to avoid penalties after abuse of Mathys Tel

France Under-21 international Tel is the latest player to be targeted on social media after he missed a spot kick in Wednesday night's UEFA Super League penalty shoot-out defeat to Paris St Germain. The Premier League club lost the shoot-out 4-3 after they had surrendered a late 2-0 lead in Italy to draw 2-2 after 90 minutes. A Kick It Out statement read: 'If you're a black player, it would be totally understandable to think, 'Why would I want to take a penalty?' That's the state of the game right now, and the sad fact is, it's nothing new. 'Players are routinely targeted with racism online and want action; we want action, too. 'Accountability from offenders and social media companies is a baseline, but it's not being met. 'Football bodies, authorities, and the regulator Ofcom, must come together to accelerate a plan that better protects players. 'Their welfare should always be paramount, and we stand with Mathys Tel and all those who have suffered this continuing, racist abuse.' Tottenham, who initially signed Tel on loan from Bayern Munich in January before making the move permanent in a £30million deal in June, said the player had shown 'bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty' . The club said in a statement: 'We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night's UEFA Super Cup defeat. 📢 Discrimination in football remains at record levels. From sexism to racism, online abuse to ableism — here's what the numbers from 2024/25 tell us. 👇 Click the link below to read more. — Kick It Out (@kickitout) August 6, 2025 'Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards – hiding behind anonymous usernames and profiles to spout their abhorrent views. 'We will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify. We stand with you, Mathys.' Tottenham led 2-0 until the 85th minute at the Bluenergy Stadium in Udine, through goals from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero before late efforts from Lee Kang-in and Goncalo Ramos hauled PSG level. Tel's team-mate Dominic Solanke rallied around the 20-year-old, posting on his Instagram story: 'Pathetic. Will it ever stop. Anyone can miss a penalty. Big up bro for taking one.'
