The Airlink Pumas got their 2025 Carling Currie Cup season off to a great start on July 25 when they tore through an ill-disciplined Suzuki Griquas side at Mbombela Stadium.
In a repeat of the 2024 Carling Currie Cup Premier Division season opener, the Pumas were drawn against the Griquas to start their 2025 campaign, this time at Mbombela Stadium. It was the third time the two sides had locked horns at Mbombela Stadium this year with the Pumas holding a significant mental advantage going into the fixture as they'd won the other two clashes in 2025.
The Griquas would have been eager to avenge their SA Cup final loss, though. The encounter kicked off at 19:00 on a cold Friday night in Mbombela. The visitors from Kimberley drew first blood thanks to an early penalty that put them 3-0 ahead just after the one-minute mark.
Their lead was about as short-lived as it could've been, as a Heinz Bertram charge down led to a Sango Xamlashe try for the Pumas only 40 seconds later. The Griquas reclaimed the lead in the 12th minute with a try of their own, before the Pumas hit back with another try to retake the lead in the 15th minute.
The lead changed hands once again in the in the 23rd minute when George Whitehead slotted over a penalty for the Griquas. Another penalty and a try for the Griquas, along with two Pumas penalties took the scoreline to 23-18 in the Northern Cape side's favour on the stroke of half-time. But a Pumas try from the base of a powerful line-out maul after the hooter meant the hosts were 25-23 ahead when half-time finally came.
This was the last time the lead changed hands during the match and proved the turning point in the encounter as the Pumas managed to run amok in the second half. Their charge was aided by the fact that the Griquas received no fewer than three yellow cards in the second half, the first of which came at Caleb Abrahams's expense only three minutes into the half. Two minutes later Whitehead was also dismissed, leaving the Griquas with only 13 men on the field.
The Pumas ensured they capitalised on the numerical advantage and ran in a try and a penalty while the Griquas were two men down. Gurswin Wehr was the third Griquas player to be given his marching orders, just as Abrahams returned to the field with the score now 35-23 in the Pumas' favour. The Griquas fought hard despite their disadvantage and clawed back to score a try as the clock passed 70 minutes.
The Pumas received their first card of the game when debutant JJ Scheepers was yellow-carded with four minutes to play. But, the damage was done as the Pumas scored a further two tries in the last 10 minutes to put the game to bed. The final score was 49-28 in favour of the Pumas, handing them the perfect start to the season.
They will now travel to Bloemfontein to face a Toyota Cheetahs side eager to kick into gear after a shock defeat against the Sanlam Boland Kavaliers in their first game. The match will kick off at Toyota Stadium at 19:00 on Friday, August 1.

Junior Springbok star Batho Hlekani to debut for Sharks in Currie Cup visit to Griquas

Bathobele Hlekani of the Sharks challenged by Janu Botha of Griquas during the 2024 Currie Cup match. | BackpagePix The Sharks XV are back on the road for the third time in four weeks as they travel to Kimberley to take on the Griquas in a Currie Cup fourth-round clash against the 2022 finalists on Friday afternoon. Coach JP Pietersen, buoyed by his team's brave effort against the Cheetahs last weekend in going down 5-7, has stuck with his young blood and has handed Junior Springbok heavyweight Bathobele Hlekani his first start this season. The 20-year-old will be playing in his familiar role at flank, although he made his debut for the Sharks XV last year, also in week four, but selected at lock. Another change in the pack sees Bryce Calvert returning at hooker for Jacques Marais. Deon Slabbert is in for Corne Rahl at lock, and Matt Romao takes over at flank from Tino Mavesere. SA Under-20 star Ceano Everson replaces Bradley Davids at scrumhalf in the first of the backline changes, while fans get to see wing Paschal Ekeji for the first time. He is of Nigerian descent and was born in Lesotho, and he was schooled at Grey College. He read for an honours degree in agriculture at the University of Stellenbosch. Ekeji played Varsity Cup rugby and is back from a stint in the USA, where he had a shot at the NFL. Ekeji takes over from Yaw Penxe. The final change sees SA Sevens star, Commonwealth gold medalist and Olympic bronze medalist Christie Grobbelaar, replacing last week's Player of the Match, Phikolomzi 'PK' Sobahle, on the wing. Bulls coach Nomlomo feels veteran scrumhalf Schreuder has added touch of class to Cavaliers

Nippy winger Riyaad Bam scored the only try for the Bulls during their Currie Cup defeat to the Pumas in Pretoria. Bulls Currie Cup coach Phiwe Nomlomo feels veteran scrumhalf Louis Schreuder's return from Bath in the Premiership is helping knit together an already fearsome Boland Cavaliers backline. The Bulls face their high-riding 'brothers' – Bulls owners Johann Rupert and Patrice Motsepe are also majority shareholders in Boland – in round four of the competition at Boland Rugby Stadium in Wellington on Sunday (3pm kick-off). The hosts are fresh off a 29-10 bonus-point win against the Lions in round three in Wellington that increased their chances of making the Currie Cup play-offs. The Bulls are still smarting from a 41-7 humbling by the Pumas at home after two convincing wins. The two teams are joined on 11 points by log leaders the Pumas. 'Boland are pretty sharp,' Nomlomo said during an online media conference on Tuesday afternoon. 'Louis Schreuder came on at nine and he's a seasoned campaigner. He's literally just won the championship with Bath and now he comes in, so he'll be a massive help from that perspective.'

OPINION: ‘Little guys' ensure 2025 Currie Cup is wide open

It is surprising that Pumas boss Jimmy Stonehouse has never really been in the frame to coach a 'bigger team'. How quickly things can change in sport. A week ago the Bulls and Lions were the only unbeaten teams in the Currie Cup, and considered the hot favourites to win the title this season, having each won their opening two games, while the other six teams had all lost one of their first two matches. A week on and all eight Premier Division teams have now lost at least one game, blowing the competition wide open. And besides the Sharks and Western Province, who have yet to win in three outings each, all six other teams look like they're in with a chance of going all the way this season. And that's because the so-called smaller teams like Griquas, Pumas and Boland are playing full-strength sides against the 'big boys' who're resting a number of their first-choice players. Anything can happen on any weekend, as we saw this last weekend. Pumas stun Bulls at Loftus I don't know when last all four winners in a week were the 'little guys' – Boland beat the Lions 29-10, the Cheetahs beat the Sharks 7-5, the Pumas beat the Bulls 41-7 and Griquas beat Western Province 47-17. What a remarkable round of results. You've simply got to doff your cap to those smaller unions, and especially their coaching teams, who're really up against it in South African rugby. Pumas boss Jimmy Stonehouse especially deserves far more credit than he gets. His team are always competitive and tough to play against and they fear no one. It is surprising Stonehouse wasn't even in the discussion to take over the Bulls coaching job when Jake White left a few weeks ago. I wonder why not? I also wonder if he's ever been considered to take charge of a bigger team, which plays internationally? Would the Lions, for example, be interested in him were they to make a change at URC coaching level? Or, is a guy like Stonehouse happy to stay in the beautiful Mbombela area and keep developing young players who've not cracked it at the bigger unions? Anyway, well done to the 'little guys' who've really shaken up the Currie Cup. If nothing else, we're in for an interesting few weeks as the teams chase a top-four finish for a place in the semi-finals.
