A Mercedes-AMG Hypercar Was Part of an Alleged $5.4 Million Scam
If it's too good to be true, it just might be.
A Los Angeles man is suing in federal court after he said he was scammed out of $5.4 million while trying to buy a Mercedes-AMG One hypercar, according to The Denver Post. The plug-in hybrid hypercar, which was unveiled in 2022, was, at the time, said to be immediately sold out as well since only 275 would be made.

The alleged scam started a year before, in 2021, when the L.A. man, identified as Michael Mente, worked with a Colorado lawyer named Scott Oliver and a French seller named Jean-Pierre M.R. Clement. But Clement, the suit says, was a fake name, and behind the alleged fraud was a man identified as Traveon Rogers, who is currently serving time in prison in Texas in an unrelated case.
Mente had paid $5.4 million to get a build slot for the car from Mercedes, but now that money is gone and the Mercedes-AMG One never delivered. The lawsuit was filed last month in U.S. District Court in Colorado. The Denver Post said it could not reach Mente or Rogers for comment, but did talk to Oliver, the attorney.
'Rogers was quite a character,' Oliver told the Post. 'Clearly he was able to convince people and get them to pay money and defraud people out of a lot of money.'
The Post also viewed Rogers' various social media accounts, in which he claimed to have been an athlete in the NFL and claimed to have made billions of dollars investing in startups. Other users on social media have published takedowns of Rogers' alleged scams; Rogers has also been previously arrested several times, according to the Post.
Most relevantly, Rogers had been sued in 2023 for a different alleged scheme involving the Mercedes-AMG One hypercar, in which he was accused of using over $3 million to buy a house in Texas.
Scams in the world of supercars, hypercars, and classic cars are all too common, like they are in any segment of the economy where there is a scarcity of product and millions of dollars at stake. The contours of many of these scams are familiar, with a huckster promising to acquire a vehicle they say they have some sort of special access to, often a car that is difficult to acquire conventionally. Many of them end the same way: With the police or a lawsuit, and an old lesson relearned about things seeming too good to be true.

Daimler Truck, DHL and hylane partner for electric truck deal
Daimler Truck has partnered with DHL Group and hylane to incorporate fully electric trucks into DHL's fleet. The agreement, signed at the "transport logistic" trade fair in Munich, will see DHL acquire 30 Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 trucks through hylane's innovative "Transport as a Service model". Under this model, DHL will not own the vehicles; instead, hylane will charge DHL based on the actual kilometres travelled. This approach aligns with the growing trend of businesses seeking flexible and cost-effective solutions to reduce their carbon footprint. The electric trucks are slated for deployment in the Post & Parcel Germany division, enhancing the efficiency of transport between parcel centres. DHL Group Post & Parcel Germany division chief operations officer Marc Hitschfeld said: 'We are very pleased with the partnership with hylane and Daimler Truck. This solution provides us with the necessary flexibility to significantly expand our transport fleet with a substantial number of fully electric trucks without a long lead time. This underscores our commitment to advancing e-mobility in the transport sector and taking further steps toward zero-emission logistics.' The delivery of the trucks is expected by the end of the second quarter of 2026. For hylane, the acquisition of the 30 eActros 600 trucks represents a strategic extension of its portfolio, which until now has primarily included fuel cell electric trucks. Daimler Truck Germany Mercedes-Benz Trucks & FUSO management board chairman Christian Wilz added: 'With the eActros 600, we are bringing a powerful and highly efficient electric truck to the road, specifically designed for the demands of long-distance transport and which can already be operated economically today. We are very pleased with the close partnership with hylane and DHL, as well as the order for 30 vehicles. 'This is an impressive vote of confidence in our technology – and a clear commitment to change. Together, we are making an important contribution to the electrification of long-distance transport, which is responsible for about two-thirds of CO₂ emissions in European road freight transport.' RIZON, Daimler Truck's latest all-electric vehicle brand, celebrated the arrival of its first shipment of class 4-5 vehicles in British Columbia, Canada, last year. Alstom has invested $75m in the new facility, which will produce stainless steel car body shells for passenger rail vehicles. Spanning 12,542sqm, the site will further enhance the firm's manufacturing capabilities to support other initiatives. The investment in Plant 4 will relocate production from Brazil to the US, reaffirming New York's Southern Tier as the epicentre for rail innovation. Furthermore, it will also boost domestic supply chains within the US rail industry. Initially, the new site will begin production on 200 multilevel commuter rail cars for Chicago's Metra system. The 2021 contract, valued at $775m, can be extended to increase the order up to 500 rail cars. The new facility will create 258 new jobs, including those in mechatronics engineering and robotics-related fields. It will also help retain 390 existing jobs in Hornell. Alstom received $3.4m in federal funding for the expansion. Additionally, it received grants, job credits and tax credit programs from agencies including the New York Empire State Development, the US Economic Development Administration, City of Hornell Industrial Development Agency, the US Department of Treasury CDFI Fund, US Department of Housing and Urban Development, New York State Electric & Gas, and the US Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration. 'Plant 4 upholds our commitment to making trains in America, also expanding our ability to deliver rail solutions,' he added. Congressman Nick Langworthy expressed his gratitude towards Alstom for its investment boost in the region. 'The Southern Tier is the capital of rail car and train manufacturing, and this investment is a critical next step in continuing this legacy,' he added.
