Mercedes-AMG One Catches Fire Again, Raises Safety Questions

$3M Mercedes-AMG One Catches Fire in Viral Video Priced at close to $3 million and limited to a planned 275 units, the Mercedes-AMG One hybrid hypercar is as exclusive as it gets, which is why the mere thought of one being damaged or lost is traumatic. Unfortunately, a new video has surfaced online of an AMG One burning to the ground. The clip was shared by user Chrimbu on social media, but no details were provided as to exactly where or how the blaze started. The fire does not appear to have been caused by an accident, though, which suggests the car unexpectedly caught alight. Complex Hybrid Powertrain To Blame? The extensively electrified powertrain of the AMG One isn't going to reduce the intensity of a fire. Besides the 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine, the One also features four electric motors and an 8.4-kWh lithium-ion battery. When exposed to extreme temperatures, lithium-ion batteries can result in thermal runaway. According to UL Research Institutes, this process causes the lithium-ion cell to enter a self-heating state that is difficult to stop. Furthermore, it makes it more challenging to extinguish such a fire. There's no way of knowing if the AMG One's powertrain caused the fire we see here, but it's likely that the battery and associated components further fueled the flames. When it's not lighting up the sky, the AMG One's performance is pretty hot, with the hypercar capable of a 0-62 mph sprint time of 2.9 seconds. It will reach around 218 mph, too. Not The First AMG One To Catch Alight Almost exactly two years ago, The Sun reported on another AMG One that was burned to a crisp. Allegedly, this one was being towed in Staffordshire, England, when it burst into flames. The fact that the car was switched off and being towed at the time makes this an especially bizarre event. 'We are aware of this incident involving a car that was being transported in a closed trailer as part of its assembly process,' said a spokesperson for Mercedes at the time. As one of AMG's most ambitious projects ever, Mercedes faced a number of hurdles in developing the hypercar. Ola Kallenius, Mercedes-Benz CEO, once even joked that the board must surely have been 'drunk' when it was decided to forge ahead with the car. Adapting the F1 powertrain for use on the street was one of the biggest challenges, and considering how long it took to get everything right, it's all the more disheartening that at least two Ones have been destroyed. Source: Mercedes-AMG Is The AMG One A Fire Risk? While hybrid and EV naysayers may be quick to point at the elevated fire risks of electrified cars, it's impossible to know for sure if this is an inherent flaw in the AMG hypercar. Certainly, two burned cars will raise eyebrows – especially since this is one of the most expensive cars in the world – but these could be entirely isolated incidents that have nothing to do with each other. Presently, no known recalls have been issued for the AMG One, nor have any known injuries occurred as a result of these fires. All we're left with, then, are two enormous insurance claims and a hypercar world deprived of two spectacular track toys.

Rare Mercedes-AMG One Hypercar Goes Up In Flames: Watch Video

A rare Mercedes-AMG One hypercar caught fire and was totaled in an incident in Germany. Valued at about 2.7 million Dollars, it is one of only 275 made and includes Formula 1 inspired technology. This is the second time an AMG One has caught fire, raising worries about the safety of this high-performance car. Incident Overview: The fire incident occurred in Germany, where the car had an "OL" license plate, indicating it was registered in the Oldenburg region. The dark green AMG One was featured at the Techno Classica Essen event in April. The driver was able to pull over and get out of the car before it was fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters arrived on the scene but couldn't save the vehicle, which was left completely destroyed. Moreover, It seems that the vehicle belonged to a customer rather than being a prototype as Mercedes' test vehicles use "LB" number plates, since AMG's headquarters are located in Affalterbach. About Mercedes-AMG One: The Mercedes-AMG One is a unique hypercar that brings Formula 1 technology to the road. It has a complicated hybrid powertrain featuring a 1.6-liter V6 engine and several electric motors, producing over 1,000 horsepower. Because of its complex design, the AMG One requires careful maintenance, including engine rebuilds every 31,000 miles (approximately 50,000 kms). View this post on Instagram A post shared by Supercar Fails (@ Investigation Reports: The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. While the hybrid system's complexity might be a factor, no clear conclusions have been reached yet. This incident raises concerns about the safety and reliability of high-performance hybrid vehicles that use advanced motorsport technology. The loss of another Mercedes-AMG One showcases the difficulties of applying cutting-edge racing technology to consumer cars. As the investigation continues, the automotive industry will keep a close eye on the findings to address any potential safety issues in high-performance hybrid vehicles.

This Burning Mercedes-AMG One Breaks Our Hearts

Cars are complicated machines, even before shoehorning a massively complex Formula 1 engine behind the seats. Hybridization adds yet another layer of complexity, resulting in a hypercar that requires an engine rebuild every 31,000 miles (50,000 kilometers). Mercedes-AMG faced numerous hurdles during the development of its F1 car for the road, the AMG One. Even after years of delays, the problems didn't end. One car burned to a crisp inside an enclosed trailer in May 2023. Fast-forward two years, and it appears another Mercedes-AMG One has gone up in flames. In the age of AI, it's not always easy to verify what appears on social media, but this video seems legitimate. That said, we've done our due diligence and reached out to Mercedes to confirm whether the footage of the electrified hypercar burning to a crisp is genuine. Until we hear back, please consider our skepticism warranted. Details remain scarce, but based on the surroundings and look of the ambulance, it seems the fire occurred in Germany. The AMG One in question carries an 'OL' license plate, indicating registration in the Oldenburg region. After some digging, we found other videos of the car prior to the incident. The dark green machine was showcased in April at the Techno Classica Essen. Firefighters responded to the scene, but it was too late to save one of the 275 units that Mercedes-AMG is making. Footage of the aftermath shows what's left of the fastest production car to lap the Nürburgring . Frankly, identifying the make and model would be difficult, given how little is left after the fire. As for what caused the blaze, it's tempting to blame the complex hybrid setup. However, it's unclear whether the battery or the intricately engineered 1.6-liter V-6 was responsible. What matters most is that the driver apparently pulled over and got out of the vehicle before the AMG One was fully engulfed. Hopefully, they escaped unharmed. Circling back to the license plate, it appears to have been a customer car rather than a prototype. Mercedes' test vehicles typically use 'LW' plates for Ludwigsburg, because AMG's headquarters are located in Affalterbach, a municipality in the Ludwigsburg district. In 2023, his car collection was estimated to be worth around US$13 million. The crown jewel: Bugatti Chiron Super Sport, worth an eye-watering US$5.5 million. Hamilton's long-standing relationship with Mercedes has resulted in a strong affinity for the brand. His lineup includes a Mercedes-AMG GT R, SLS AMG, EQS sedan, and Mercedes-Maybach S600. But the rarest of them all is the Mercedes-AMG One, a hybrid hypercar worth US$2.7 million. With over 1,000 horsepower, the AMG One features a turbocharged 1.6-litre V6 engine paired with four electric motors based on Mercedes' Formula One powertrain. His most expensive car is a $1.4 million Pagani Huayra which he got in 2014. He also has a Porsche 911 GT3 and uses a Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing as a daily driver. These cars are all great but he has another unique and noteworthy vehicle in his collection. What he got for his wife Priscilla Chan is not available in any Porsche dealership. Among the regular rides he has been spotted in are a Honda Fit, a Ford Bronco, a Volkswagen Golf GTI and an Acura TSX. His most expensive car is possibly a US$1.4 million Pagani Huayra, acquired in 2014, and he's also been spotted driving a Porsche 911 GT3 and a Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing. But the most intriguing vehicle is the unique Porsche that he got for his wife, Priscilla Chan, which is not available in Porsche dealership. The custom Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT Minivan built by West Coast Customs was originally a high-performance SUV with a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 650 horsepower, modified with minivan proportions: an extended roofline, electric sliding doors and three rows of seating for up to seven passengers. It's a family car—but make it Silicon Valley.
