American curlers Thiesse and Dropkin earn spot in Milan-Cortina Olympic mixed doubles field
Americans Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin clinched a berth in the 2026 Olympic mixed doubles curling competition when they beat Canada 8-4 at the world championships in Fredericton, New Brunswick, on Saturday to earn a fifth-place finish that was enough for a spot in Milan-Cortina.
It will be the first Olympics for Dropkin, who was runner-up to five-time Olympian and 2018 gold medalist John Shuster at the U.S. men's trials for each of the last two Winter Games. Thiesse was an alternate for Nina Roth's women's team in Pyeongchang in 2018.
'It's a huge relief,' Thiesse told the CBC. 'This has been the goal, the dream, for both of us for so long and we both worked so hard for it. To be playing together and be such good friends, and just do it together is really, really exciting.'
Thiesse and Dropkin won the U.S. mixed doubles trials this winter to earn the right to represent the country at the world championships in Canada. But the Americans needed to finish at least fifth in Fredericton to qualify for the Olympics.
After beating Canada on Saturday, Thiesse and Dropkin had to wait out Scotland's 9-6 win over Australia in another placement match to clinch a trip to Italy.
'We felt like we were in control of our own destiny with our Olympics so let's just give it our all,' Thiesse said. 'We felt like we did that today.'
The U.S. Olympic trials for the men's and women's curling teams are in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in November.

Keely Hodgkinson eases to victory in Lausanne
Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson produced a dominant display to win the women's 800 metres at the Diamond League meet in Lausanne, with British team-mate Georgia Hunter Bell finishing third. Hodgkinson, who has been recovering from a hamstring injury, returned after a 376-day absence in Silesia last weekend to set a world-leading run of one minute and 54.74 seconds, just behind her own national record. With only Prudence Sekgodiso for company heading into the final 300m, Hodgkinson soon pulled clear of the South African to coast towards another impressive victory. Hodgkinson's training partner Hunter Bell, meanwhile, must now decide whether to have another crack at the 800m in Tokyo or focus on the 1,500m where she would be looking to add to her Olympic bronze medal from Paris.

The NBA made a mistake not getting involved with the Big3
Ice Cube thinks it's 'silly' that Adam Silver doesn't show support for the Big 3(🎥 @theOGsShow / Ice Cube has been very vocal the last few years about the NBA's disregard and lack of support for the Big3, the 3-on-3 style touring league he started in 2017 that continues to chart its own course in the basketball space. This summer, as the Big3 has seemingly hit another peak of popularity, it's abundantly clear that was a missed opportunity by the NBA. In fact, the NBA should probably be thanking the Big3 for creating what's become something like the basketball version of the PGA's Champions tour. It's given players an off-ramp from a league that might be done with them, even if they're still able to play at a high level. For those who don't know, the PGA TOUR Champions is for senior golfers, those retired from the main PGA TOUR. Though Big3 players aren't what you would consider seniors -- basketball players retire a lot earlier than golfers -- the bulk of the league are former NBA players. Names like Joe Johnson, Greg Monroe, Mario Chalmers, Jordan Crawford, the list goes on. And because of the half-court setting, even the older players are able to compete in a real way. Now, this isn't exactly how Ice Cube wants the league marketed. He said earlier this summer he'd like active players to participate in the Big 3 too. Many of the players are still young enough to play in the NBA. Last year, Cube challenged the Olympic 3-on-3 gold medalist team to play the Big 3 champion. But even if it remains a league for former NBAers, it's still a fascinating model. What Michael Beasley and Lance Stephenson did with their viral back-and-forth leading up to a one-on-one game ahead of their Big 3 season as teammates was internet gold. Countdown to Kickoff: Liona Lefau is ready to breakout on a national scale
Liona Lefau heads into his junior year with more experience and therefore, more expectations. He will not be the most talked about guy on the defense, but he might just be one of the most important. We are 10 days out from Texas football being back in our lives, and today it's all about Liona Lefau. This is one my favorite players on the entire football team, and another name that I think Texas fans know well, but the national media will know very soon. Very instinctual, strong player that plays the run incredibly well. Pass coverage is something that could use improvement, which he will be asked to do at times this year. 2024 Stats: 63 tackles, 5 TFLs, 2 sacks, 1 INT, 1 FF in 16 games(10 starts) Of all the guys on this team that I think can break out on a national scale, Lefau is at the very top of my list. There are some small things that he struggles with, like overcommitting at times in the run game, but those are fixable problems. That is about getting more reps and feeling more comfortable in the defense as much as anything. He will get those chances this year. The linebackers room is one Texas fans have to feel confident heading into this year. Anthony Hill Jr leads the way, and because there are consistently only two true LBs on the field for Texas at any given time, the depth is incredible. Behind Hill, it's likely to be Ty'Anthony Smith, a guy that has had a remarkable fall camp. Behind Lefau, it's the new LB in Trey Moore moving from more of a pass rushing role. Then you have Brad Spence you can play around with and Bo Barnes that is making waves early. Of all of those guys, including Hill, I'm most excited to see what Lefau can be this year. If he takes another step forward, this could be the very best LB duo in the entire country and the run defense is going to not miss a beat. The other great part of this for Lefau is that leadership is not lacking in this room, so he doesn't have to be the most vocal guy in the room. That's not to say he won't take a step forward there, just to say that responsibility doesn't solely fall on his shoulders. This is a player that has the luxury of playing next to Anthony Hill Jr, which makes his job easier overall. The other part of that is if Pete Kwiatkowski is going to be able to use Anthony Hill as freely as he would like, Lefau needs to be incredible sound in his spot. He plays a role that itself won't get highlights, but can be the key to the Texas defense being as effective as it can be, which is the best in recent history. Liona Lefau is very unlikely to be talked about as much as he should this year. When you have three AP Preseason All-Americans on the defense, it's hard for others to break through in a big way. That being said, he is as important of a player to this team and defense as just about anyone. He is the underrated key to success for Texas in 2025, not because he will put up insane numbers, but because he opens up the rest of the defense to be what they can be. The player who will talk about tomorrow is one that could be equally as important, especially because of the position versatility that he brings to this room.
