VBPD receives recognition for forensic standards
VBPD received recognition for meeting international standards for their inspection of latent fingerprints, one of only 31 agencies in the U.S.
Additionally, VBPD was given accreditation in scene investigation, making the department one of only 28 agencies to receive that recognition in the U.S.
The ISO 17020 standard requires agencies to excel in complying with standards to ensure a quality work product that adheres to forensic science best-practices.
'This accreditation is a testament to the accurate, detailed, and thorough work that our Forensic Services Unit performs each and every day,' said VBPD Chief Paul Neudigate. 'Our team produces reliable and effective results that positively impact our ability to serve our community and hold criminals accountable.'

Mark Warner and Tim Kaine are demanding answers from the U.S. Navy regarding the death of Seaman Angelina Resendiz, found dead June 9 in Norfolk after being reported missing for more than 10 days. Virginia Beach Fire Marshals seeks public help for illegal fireworks display at Oceanfront
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Beach Fire Marshal's Office is asking for the public's help in locating those responsible for an illegal fireworks display at the Oceanfront. According to officials, on July 4 around 9 p.m., Fire Marshals were dispatched to 45th Street in the North End section of the city for reports of a significant illegal fireworks display. Upon arrival to the scene, the show was still ongoing. Fire Marshal's said several of the fireworks malfunctioned, causing large-diameter mortars to discharge nearby spectators. Marshal's also noted a safety perimeter was not set up during the display. Following the display, investigators were able to collect the following from the scene: 96 two-inch mortar tubes 18 freestanding mortar tubes (two-inch diameter) Eight boxes of flaming balls (36 shots each) A remote-controlled firing system (app-operated) Additional assorted fireworks Marshal's were also called to investigate several other illegal displays, including at 48th, 52nd, 54th and 62nd Streets, as well as at Croatan Beach. Officials said that active fires and unexploded fireworks were found at these locations, posing a potential danger for unsuspecting bystanders. Person apprehended after unauthorized perimeter breach at Joint Base Langley-Eustis
HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A person was apprehended after an unauthorized perimeter breach at Joint Base Langley-Eustis Thursday morning. Shortly before 8 a.m., a Hampton officer observed a vehicle traveling north on North Armistead Avenue make an abrupt right turn and proceed through a fence surrounding Langley Air Force Base, according to Hampton Police Division Public Information Officer Cpl. Shaun Stalnaker. The officer initiated a pursuit and followed the vehicle onto the base. The officer was able to bring the vehicle to a stop shortly thereafter, Stalnaker said. According to officials, installation security forces assisted in apprehending the driver who breached the JBLE Perimeter Gate. Officials said there was no indication of a threat to national security and that no injuries were reported. Photos from the scene show crews working to repair the gate. The investigation into this incident is being led by the Office of Special Investigations. 10 On Your Side's Brett Hall is at the scene and will provide updates throughout the day.
