Chinese student Zou Zhenhao who raped 10 women, targeted dozens more jailed for life in UK

LONDON, June 20 — A Chinese post-graduate student convicted of drugging and raping 10 women in the UK and China and suspected of having attacked more was yesterday jailed for life by a London court.
Police in London say they have evidence to suggest he may have targeted more than 50 other women.
Serial rapist Zhenhao Zou, 28 — described in court as 'calculated and predatory' — targeted young Chinese women whom he invited to his London flat for drinks or to study before drugging and attacking them.
Zou filmed nine of the rapes with hidden or handheld cameras, but only three of the 10 victims have ever been identified.
Sentencing him at Inner London Crown Court, Judge Rosina Cottage said there was 'no doubt that you planned and executed a campaign of rape' that had caused 'devastating and long term effects'.
To the world he appeared 'well to do, ambitious and charming' but this was a mask hiding a 'sexual predator', she said.
He treated his victims 'callously' as 'sex toys' for his own gratification, and his desire to assert 'power and control over women' meant that he would be a 'risk for an indefinite period', she added.
Zou, wearing a dark suit and glasses, listened impassively in the dock to the sentence via a translator. He will serve a minimum of 22 years in jail, after accounting for time already spent in custody.
The former engineering student at University College London was found guilty by a jury in March of 28 offences including 11 counts of rape — with two of the counts relating to one woman — three counts of voyeurism and one of false imprisonment.
He was found guilty of raping three women in London and seven in China between 2019 and 2023.
He was also convicted of three counts of possessing butanediol — an industrial solvent — with intent to commit a sexual offence and 10 counts of possession of an extreme pornographic image.
'Prolific' rapist
Victims told the sentencing hearing in impact statements of the psychological damage they suffered including nightmares, self harm and a sense of despair and isolation.
One recalled 'wandering like a trapped animal trying to find an exit' after she was attacked.
'What happened that night is etched into my soul forever,' she said, adding that Zou's family was 'very powerful in China' and she feared he would 'seek revenge'.
After the sentence, Saira Pike of the Crown Prosecution Service described Zou as a 'serial rapist and a danger to women'.
'His life sentence reflects the heinous acts and harm he caused to women and the danger he posed to society.'
Analysis of footage and web chats showed the former student's 'meticulous planning and the horrifying execution of his crimes'.
And Pike paid tribute to the 'courageous women' who came forward to report his 'horrific crimes' and whose evidence — combined with his own videos — helped secure his conviction and life sentence.
Since he was convicted, and following an international appeal by UK police, some 24 women had come forward to say they might have been sexually assaulted by Zou.
London's Met police have said they have evidence to suggest he may have targeted more than 50 other women and urged possible victims to come forward, adding that he had also studied in Belfast in Northern Ireland in 2017.
'Our investigation remains open and we continue to appeal to anyone who may think they have been a victim of Zou,' said Commander Kevin Southworth of the Metropolitan Police.
'Please come forward and speak with our team — we will treat you with empathy, kindness and respect.' — AFP

US singer Chris Brown pleads not guilty in UK assault case

LONDON, June 20 — American R&B singer Chris Brown today pleaded not guilty in a UK court to a charge stemming from an alleged London nightclub brawl in 2023. Brown, 36, wearing a dark suit and tie as well as glasses, stood in the dock in London as the charge was put to him, replying: 'Not guilty, ma'am.' The singer, who is on £5 million (RM28.4 million) bail, waved to people in the public gallery as he left, following his plea to allegedly attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. A five to seven-day long trial was scheduled to start on October 26, 2026. The singer was held in custody for a nearly a week in May after he was arrested in the northwestern city of Manchester. He was later released on bail. Under the terms of his bail, he will forfeit the £5 million guarantee if he fails to return for court proceedings. He was also given the go-ahead to continue his scheduled international tour which began on June 8 in Amsterdam. The star, who had a troubled relationship with Barbadian singer Rihanna, is on the UK leg of his tour, with his next date in London on Saturday. Brown is charged with attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent in relation to an assault in which the victim was allegedly struck several times with a bottle before being pursued, punched and kicked. The alleged incident took place at a nightclub in Hanover Square in London on February 19, 2023 while Brown was touring in the UK. Grammy winner Police detained him in the early hours of May 13 at a five-star hotel in Manchester after he reportedly flew in by private jet. Other bail terms include that he should surrender his passport if he is not travelling. He is also required to live at a specific address known to the court and is not permitted to visit the nightclub were the alleged assault took place or contact the alleged victim, Abraham Diah. He appeared in the dock with co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu, a US national, with whom he is jointly charged. Akinlolu also entered a not guilty plea to the same charge of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. Both men are also jointly charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm. They will enter pleas to that charge on July 11, the court was told. Brown also faces a third charge of having an offensive weapon, a bottle, in public. The Grammy-winning singer is known for mid-2000s hits such as Kiss, Kiss. He rose from a local church choir in Virginia to sudden fame with his rich R&B voice and later rap, but his reputation has been tarnished by the allegations of abuse. He also are also scheduled to perform in France, Portugal and the US later in the year, before the tour wraps up in Memphis in mid-October. — AFP

Contractor and ex-wife sentenced to 34 years for killing domestic helper in Penampang, cruelty revealed in court

KOTA KINABALU, June 20 — A contractor and his former wife were each sentenced to 34 years in prison by the High Court here on Friday after being found guilty of murdering their domestic helper in December 2021. Judge Datuk Dr Lim Hock Leng delivered the verdict against Mohammad Ambree Yunos @ Unos, 44, and Etiqah Siti Noorashikeen Mohd Sulong, 37, who were convicted of the murder of 28-year-old Nur Afiyah Daeng Damin. The offence took place over several days, between December 8 and 11, 2021, in a condominium unit at Amber Tower, Lido Avenue in Penampang, near here. Ambree was also sentenced to receive 12 strokes of the cane, while Etiqah, an engineer with Petronas and a former Masterchef Malaysia finalist, was spared caning due to her gender provisions. In the judgement, the judge said that the prosecution proved that the couple had acted with intent in causing the injuries and that the deceased succumbed to the injuries. He also noted that the ex-spouses had tried to blame each other for the death during the course of the trial. In passing judgement, Lim said that although both lawyers had put up impassioned mitigation pleas, he could not ignore the cruelty suffered by the deceased at the hands of the accused, as highlighted by the prosecution. 'The court considered the nature of the injuries and the manner in which they were inflicted over time,' he said. Both had been out on bail throughout the trial but were ordered to begin serving their sentences immediately upon conviction. During the trial, it was revealed that the victim had been subjected to prolonged abuse, resulting in fatal injuries, with evidence of trauma to her face and deputy public prosecutor Dacia Jane Romanus urged the court to impose the death sentence. She argued that the case had shocked not only the conscience of Sabahans, but of the nation as a whole, and for that reason, must be met with the full weight of the law. She said that the victim had sought honest work with the couple during the pandemic but was instead subjected to daily torment, denied basic rights, and robbed of her life. Dacia said evidence before the court, including videos and images recovered from the accused's phones, stood as disturbing documentation of the deceased's torment. 'This evidence not only corroborated the abuse but also revealed the accused persons' chilling intent to record and preserve her suffering. 'We wish to remind the court that in this case, the condition of the deceased's body was so severely deteriorated that her husband was only able to identify her by the bangle she wore on her wrist, a silent witness to the life she once lived and the violence she endured,' she said. The couple were jointly charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, read together with Section 34, which deals with common intention. The charge carries a prison term ranging from 30 to 40 years and a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane. Datuk Ram Singh represented Ambree while Datuk Rakhbir Singh represented Etiqah.

Pro-Palestinian activists claim damage to RAF planes at UK military base

LONDON, June 20 — Pro-Palestinian activists in Britain said they had broken into a Royal Air Force base in central England today and damaged two military aircraft used for refuelling and transportation. The campaign group Palestine Action said that two of its activists had entered the Brize Norton base in Oxfordshire and had sprayed red paint over the Voyager aircraft and caused further damage with crowbars. 'Despite publicly condemning the Israeli government, Britain continues to send military cargo, fly spy planes over Gaza and refuel US/Israeli fighter jets,' a spokesperson for the group said in a statement, while a video of the alleged incident was posted on social media. 'Britain isn't just complicit, it's an active participant in the Gaza genocide and war crimes across the Middle East.' There was no immediate response from Britain's Ministry of Defence or the local police. Palestine Action is among groups that have regularly targeted defence firms and other companies in Britain linked to Israel since the start of the conflict in Gaza. 'The targeted planes are Airbus Voyagers, which can carry military cargo and are used to refuel Israeli/US/UK military aircrafts and fighter jets,' its statement said. — Reuters
