The Punjab government has allocated 86 electric buses for Faisalabad Urban Transport, aiming to provide quality public transport services in the city.
As part of this initiative, 33 buses are expected to be delivered soon and will operate on six different routes.
This project is separate from the planned metro bus service for
the city.
Faisalabad Development Authority (FDA) Director General Muhammad Asif Chaudhry, shared these developments while addressing representatives from the business community and real estate sector at the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
He highlighted FDA's ongoing projects, jurisdiction, and civic issues impacting the city.
Chaudhry informed attendees that while the Faisalabad Master Plan case is currently under court proceedings, the Peri-Urban Structure Plan is being implemented.
Under this plan, the city has been zoned to regulate urban development, and environmental impact assessments have been made mandatory for new constructions and housing colonies. The zoning initiative has successfully reduced brownfield areas by 30,000 acres.
Additionally, outline development plans for 125 cities, including Faisalabad, have been prepared at the provincial level.
Clarifying FDA's role, Chaudhry stated that the authority is responsible for executing development schemes under the deposit work mechanism before handing them over to the Municipal Corporation or other relevant bodies.
However, maintenance and repair of these projects do not fall under FDA's jurisdiction.
He also discussed major infrastructure projects, including the expansion and reconstruction of key city roads.
Notably, Sheikhupura Road, from Nishatabad Bridge to Gatwala, is set to be developed into a state-of-the-art two-way highway featuring rainwater drainage systems and footpaths.
Providing an update on FDA City's progress, Chaudhry revealed that 14 out of 18 electricity feeders have been completed. The construction of the DPS campus building is also underway.
Additionally, the Central Park project within FDA City will include a scenic lake, the Mianwali Forest, and various recreational facilities.
On the topic of urban planning, he detailed the ongoing digitization of FDA records and the Punjab government's efforts to establish a legal framework for regularizing old, unapproved housing schemes.
During the session, Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) President Rehan Nasim Bharara welcomed Chaudhry and raised concerns about civic challenges in the city.
He emphasised the urgent need for increased financial resources to address these issues effectively.
In conclusion, FCCI Senior Vice President Qaiser Shamshad Gachha extended his gratitude to the guests, while President Bharara presented a shield to Chaudhry as part of the chamber's Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Modernising KICT, SAPT: $1bn investment with Hutchison Port Holdings on the anvil
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, while underscoring the key role of national shipping industry in bolstering international trade, has said that in this connection the government's initiative includes a fast-track strategy for a $1 billion investment with Hutchison Port Holdings Limited, focusing on modernising the Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT) and South Asia Pakistan Terminals Limited (SAPT). Speaking at an event, the minister said the government was actively inviting global shipping companies to invest in Pakistan's maritime sector, leveraging the country's strategic location. The event was hosted by Aasim A Siddiqui, managing director of Pakistan Intermodal Limited (PIL), and attended by senior management from shipping lines and terminal operators. The minister emphasised the government's commitment to modernising maritime infrastructure and enhancing operational capacities across the nation. CK Hutchison plans $1bn port investment On March 18, 2025, the Hutchison Ports, one of the world's leading ports network, has agreed to fast-track its $1 billion investment plan to modernise Pakistan's port infrastructure during a meeting between Chaudhry and Andy Tsoi, Managing Director of Hutchison Port Holdings Limited. The two sides met to discuss 'swift execution of the previously proposed $1 billion investment aimed at upgrading Pakistan's port infrastructure'. Andy Tsoi reiterated Hutchison Ports' commitment to Pakistan and emphasised the importance of efficient execution to maximise economic benefits, it added. 'Both sides discussed regulatory clearances, infrastructure upgrades, and supply chain improvements, agreeing to remove bottlenecks that could slow down the project. Special attention was given to accelerating the deployment of automation, digitalisation, and green port solutions to ensure sustainable operations.' Chaudhry highlighted that over 90 percent of Pakistan's trade volume was managed through seaports, with the maritime sector contributing more than 10 per cent to the country's GDP and providing employment to over two million individuals, both directly and indirectly. He noted that the Karachi Port Trust alone had the capacity to handle over 125 million tons of cargo annually. In the fiscal year 2023, the shipping sector generated approximately $235 million in revenue, with oil tankers accounting for about 70 per cent of this figure. Addressing the financial implications of relying on foreign shipping companies, the minister pointed out that Pakistan spends an estimated $6-8 billion annually on freight charges. Stricter waste regulations at coasts, ports urged
Listen to article Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has issued a clarion call for urgent, coordinated action to combat plastic pollution and modernise Pakistan's maritime infrastructure. In a statement released on World Environment Day, the minister urged alignment of maritime policies with global climate goals to safeguard the country's over 1,000-km coastline and marine biodiversity. Highlighting the 2025 World Environment Day theme, "Beat Plastic Pollution," Chaudhry outlined the transition from a wasteful "take-make-dispose" economic model to a circular one focused on reuse, recycling, and sustainable alternatives. He noted that the ministry has already planted millions of mangrove saplings, which serve as natural barriers against pollution and vital nurseries for marine life. "Pakistan's Indus Delta hosts one of the world's largest mangrove ecosystems. Our restoration efforts, with support from local communities and international partners, are vital to coastal resilience," he said. The ministry is also working with port authorities and shipping stakeholders to enforce stricter waste regulations. In a separate engagement, Chaudhry addressed key figures from Pakistan's shipping industry at a dinner hosted by Aasim A Siddiqui, Managing Director of Pakistan Intermodal Limited. Stressing that over 90% of Pakistan's trade moves through seaports, he highlighted the sector's contribution of more than 10% to GDP and employment for over two million people. He noted that Karachi Port Trust alone can handle 125 million tonnes of cargo annually, and the shipping sector earned $235 million in revenue in 2023, largely from oil tankers. However, he warned that Pakistan still spends $68 billion annually on foreign freight charges and called for expanding local shipping capacities. A $1 billion fast-track investment initiative with Hutchison Port Holdings to upgrade Karachi's terminals was also discussed. Chaudhry assured stakeholders of continued collaboration and policy coordination to foster sustainable growth. The evening concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening Pakistan's maritime economy through environmental responsibility, investment, and innovation.
