
Marked improvement in maternal, child health indicators: Government

NEW DELHI: India has witnessed a significant improvement in key maternal and child health indicators between 2014 and 2021, according to a health ministry statement. The Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) has declined by 37 points from 130 per lakh live births in 2014-16 to 93 in 2019-21, the statement mentioned, citing the Sample Registration System (SRS) Report-2021 released by the Registrar General of India (RGI) on Wednesday.
Similarly, the downward trend of child mortality indicators continued, the ministry added.

"The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) has dropped from 39 per 1,000 live births in 2014 to 27 per 1,000 live births in 2021.
"The Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR) has declined from 26 per 1,000 live births in 2014 to 19 per 1,000 live births in 2021. The Under-Five Mortality Rate has also improved, dropping from 45 in 2014 to 31 per 1,000 live births in 2021," it said.
Eight states have already attained the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) MMR target - less than or equal to 70 by 2030. Kerala (20), Maharashtra (38), Telangana (45), Andhra Pradesh (46), Tamil Nadu (49), Jharkhand (51), Gujarat (53), and Karnataka (63) are among the top performers, according to the SRS-2021 report.
The ministry said India's progress in the reduction of maternal and child mortality indicators has outpaced global averages.

IVRI performs first indigenous hip transplant in dog
Lucknow: The Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly, set a record by carrying out a hip transplant on a dog using indigenous technology. This first of its kind transplant in the country was carried out by IVRI scientist Dr Rohit Kumar and his team. A govt spokesperson said that artificial hips were not available for dogs in India, and when required, one had to depend on foreign equipment, which costs up to Rs 5 lakh. "IVRI has developed a completely indigenous hip system based on cemented technology for Indian breed dogs, which will provide a better life to dogs at a very low cost," a govt spokesperson said. The transplant was possible after three years of intensive research. Technical assistance was provided by human orthopaedic surgeon from Bareilly Dr Alok Singh, along with Yogesh Saxena and Devesh Saxena of Bareilly Medicare firm. The artificial hip and equipment used in the surgery were manufactured in collaboration with Gujarat's Life Ortho Care company. Experts focus on scientific aspects of astrology during month-long camp
Varanasi: A month-long astrology knowledge camp organised by Shastrarth Mahavidyalaya concluded on Sunday. A large number of people, including students and women participated in the camp. College principal and camp coordinator Pawan Kumar Shukla said that the camp was not only an effort to enrich children with Vedic traditions, scientific perspective, and self-awareness but also became a strong medium for the preservation and promotion of Indian knowledge traditions. Acharya Sanjay Upadhyay, who taught astrology at the camp, emphasised both the religious significance and scientific aspects of this science. He explained how information about the past, present, and future can be obtained through forehead lines. A new research perspective was presented by integrating the planets in the birth chart with the study and teaching of these lines, showing how forehead lines and charts together can determine the direction of life. He analysed the time cycle and periods, explaining that dividing time into three types - Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas periods - is most auspicious and fruitful for chart consideration. The camp also discussed medicine and medical science through the birth chart. Acharya Upadhyay said that by considering the indications of the chart, one can know which doctor is suitable, which medicine will be beneficial or not, and whether the treatment is beneficial for the ailment.
