Disneyland Resort is turning 70: six unforgettable experiences to share this year

The Guardian05-03-2025

It's the theme park that never ages. When Disneyland Resort opened its doors in Anaheim, California, in July 1955, it set the global standard for immersive holiday destinations.
Seventy years later it is still innovating. People arrive from around the world all year round to visit its two theme parks, and the magical combination of nostalgia, futuristic fantasy and fun offers every generation a reason to discover (and rediscover) its charms.
'Celebrate Happy!' is Disneyland Resort's 70th anniversary theme, and plans for this very special birthday include a line-up of limited-time entertainment and experiences. Be sure to see the new Mickey and Friends Celebrate Happy! parade at Disneyland Park, and a returning favourite, the Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration! parade at Disney California Adventure Park.
Both parades feature music, dynamic and colourful floats and appearances by many of your favourite Pixar and Disney Characters. Look out for the iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle – it will be dressed in its best 70th attire – and the new range of special birthday merchandise so you can take a piece of the party home with you.
If you've watched a Disney film in the past two decades, you'll be familiar with the image of fireworks exploding over Sleeping Beauty Castle. Now you can see them in person. This year, as part of the resort's 70th birthday celebrations, the night-time Wondrous Journeys fireworks display will light up Disneyland Park, complementing a hi-tech lightscape that will be projected across many of the park's iconic buildings.
The popular Paint the Night parade also returns to bring some of your favourite stories to life while drenching the park in colour and light.
If you're looking for excitement, Disneyland Resort doesn't disappoint. Start planning for the exhilaration of the Incredibles-themed Incredicoaster – you'll be zooming up and down to save Jack Jack. There's more adrenaline on offer at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, where the attraction Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance offers a journey through an epic and immersive battle between the Resistance and the First Order. The thrills keep coming with The Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT.
Join Rocket on his escape mission and feel the drop when your stolen lift makes a sudden plunge. Tiana's Bayou Adventure is one of Disneyland Park's newest reimagined attractions. Inside this wonderland of woodland animals are many familiar Characters, such as Mama Odie, Louis the Alligator and Tiana herself. It's a musical journey of twists, turns and festive fun that climaxes in a 15-metre drop.
The streets come alive with some of your favourite Characters at Disneyland Resort. During the 70th celebration, you can catch Mickey, Minnie and some of their friends in their best birthday outfits. Say hello – it might just be the perfect time for a selfie. Looking for a superhero? You might bump into Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Captain America, or one of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Star Wars fans should keep an eye out for roaming Stormtroopers, Chewbacca, Kylo Ren and more.
And it wouldn't be Disney without some of your favourite Pixar Characters. Don't miss the chance to say hello to Woody and Buzz from Toy Story, Mr and Mrs Incredible from The Incredibles or Joy and Sadness from Inside Out. You'll leave with new friends, amazing photographs and precious memories.
Who hasn't dreamed of a ride on the swirling teacups at the Mad Tea Party or boarding a pirate ship on Pirates of The Caribbean? Whether you're seven or 70, the classic Disney experiences are as joyful today as they were in 1955.
Discover the thrill of the jungle on The Jungle Cruise ride in Adventureland, explore futuristic Tomorrowland, featuring the iconic Space Mountain, or get spooked at The Haunted Mansion – they're the iconic Disney experiences you'll want to come back for again and again.
It's impossible to see and do everything at Disneyland Resort in one day. It makes sense to plan a multi-day visit, and you're going to need somewhere to rest. Disneyland Resort has three on-site hotels: Disney's Grand Californian Hotel and Spa, Disneyland Hotel and Pixar Place Hotel. Staying in any of these includes early access on select days to one of the parks, so you can tick even more experiences off your bucket list. Within walking distance of the parks are many Good Neighbour hotels – so there is something to suit every budget. Too excited to sleep? Don't miss visiting Downtown Disney District, where you'll find a world of cuisines and shopping to explore, as well as music, bars and a bowling alley – it's the perfect excuse to stay up late.
Ready to book? With the 70th Celebration happening from 16th May 2025, there has never been a better time to 'Celebrate Happy!'. Contact your travel agent and plan your next holiday to Disneyland Resort in California today.

Disney+ users warned to check important detail to avoid £1,000 fine

Disney+ users are at risk of a big fine if they don't follow this one rule. For the next five years, the streaming platform will possess the broadcasting rights for the UEFA Women's Champions League across Europe, as announced last month. However, if football fans wish to tune in, they'll have to check one key detail. From October, Disney+ subscribers will be able to stream every match. There'll be no additional cost to their monthly fee, provided they have a TV licence. Even though you are not watching the games on channels such as BBC, a licence is still required when viewing live television. Yes, even on Disney+. If you are caught streaming live content without a licence, you could receive an unwelcome £1,000 fine. Don't worry, these restrictions won't impact the rest of the Disney+ experience, as on-demand content – aka, not live – can still be viewed without a TV licence and for no extra cost. Making the announcement at the end of May, Disney+ said: 'Disney+ will be the home of the UEFA Women's Champions League across Europe from next season, allowing fans to watch every match live at no extra cost.' They explained that this 'follows a five-year deal in which The Walt Disney Company has secured live rights to the competition from 2025/26 to 2029/30.' 'As the only place fans can watch all live matches in the competition, coverage on Disney+ will launch in October 2025, marking a new era for the UEFA Women's Champions League with the introduction of the 18-team League phase format,' explained the streamer. 'Bringing more excitement, unpredictability and bigger clashes from the League phase through to the 2026 Final at Ullevaal Stadion, Oslo, all 75 matches in the competition will be live streamed on Disney+.' Karl Holmes, General Manager, Disney+ EMEA, commented: 'The UEFA Women's Champions League is the very best in football performance, dedication, and passion. 'Bringing this incredible tournament to Disney+ customers and audiences speaks to our commitment to delivering a huge range of bold and dynamic entertainment. 'As women's football continues to grow with audiences worldwide, we're proud to offer the thrill and excitement of every single match to Disney+ customers across Europe, at no extra cost.' More streaming giants have acquired the rights to live broadcasts in recent years, though, meaning it's essential you check you can take part in the fun without being stung. For example, in March, Netflix subscribers were given a warning ahead of the premiere of Everybody's Live with John Mulaney. Marking the streamer's first-ever late-night talk show, it aired live from the US with the comedian at the helm, with viewers needing a TV licence to watch without the risk of repercussions. Similarly, Netflix recently acquired the rights to the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight, plus several WWE shows. At the time, the rules were reiterated. A spokesperson said: 'A TV licence is needed to watch live content on streaming services, watch or record a TV programme on any channel, and when using BBC iPlayer. 'Further information is available on the TV licensing website or via the customer services team, who can help with any queries.' As for how much a TV licence sets you back, the figure increased on April 1. More Trending This took the total from £169.50 to £174.50, which you can either pay in monthly instalments of £14.12 or pay in one go. The price change was set by the government, and the raise was confirmed last November by the Secretary of State. View More » This money is used to pay for eight national TV channels plus regional TV services, BBC iPlayer, BBC Sounds, 56 radio stations, the BBC website, BBC World Service, and BBC apps. Miley Cyrus breaks silence on dad Billy Ray's romance with Liz Hurley as she reveals her ‘pain at parents' divorce'

MILEY Cyrus has broken her silence over dad Billy Ray's relationship with Liz Hurley — after reconciling with him following a family rift. The Wrecking Ball singer, 32, opened up that she was handling the blossoming romance like 'an adult'. 3 3 Miley fell out with the country star, 63, after the end of his 30-year marriage to her mum Tish Purcell, 58, in 2023. But she now wishes 'happiness' to her three-times wed dad and Liz, 59, despite struggling with the 'pain' of seeing her parents go their separate ways. Miley said: 'I'm being an adult about it. 'At first it's hard, because the little kid in you reacts before the adult in you can go, 'Yes, that's your dad, but that's just another person that deserves to be in his bliss and to be happy'. "My child self has caught up.' The former Disney Channel star said she puts her now-resolved issues down to her closeness to her mother — who had been Billy Ray's second wife after he divorced Cindy Smith in 1991. She told the New York Times podcast: 'My mum really loved my dad for her whole life, and I think being married to someone in the music industry and not being a part of it is obviously really hard. 'I think I took on some of my mom's hurt as my own because it hurt her more than it hurt me as an adult, and so I owned a lot of her pain.' Confirming she was fully reconciled with her dad, Miley added: 'There's been enough bridges now of time to get us all reconnected. I think timing is everything.' Billy Ray met Austin Powers star Liz on the set of their 2022 film, Christmas in Paradise. They went public with a loved-up picture in a field in April. We previously revealed Billy Ray had turned to Liz for help when his third marriage to Australian singer Firerose crumbled after seven months last year. An insider said: 'Everyone said they are world's apart but they are very similar — they have a lot in common and have the same interests and Billy is also very much her type.' Liz revealed last month that she is taking their relationship to the next level, by preparing to introduce him to her family. Billy is due to meet them next week in England when she celebrates her 60th birthday.
