Phased implementation of speed limitation devices on commercial vehicles in Sarawak to begin Oct 1

File photo of JPJ Sarawak checking some lorries along Jalan Kuching-Bau. KUCHING (July 31): The Sarawak Transport Ministry has confirmed that the federal government's phased implementation of speed limitation devices (SLDs) for commercial vehicles will also be enforced in Sarawak. Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the policy is a crucial step toward enhancing road safety and reducing the risk of major accidents involving heavy vehicles. 'Sarawak, in line with the national directive, will fully implement the enforcement of SLDs as scheduled,' he said in a statement today. The enforcement will begin in three phases starting this October 1. It will apply to goods vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) exceeding 3,500kg and passenger vehicles with a GVW of over 5,000kg that carry more than eight passengers. Under the new regulation, the maximum speed limit for such vehicles is capped at 90km/h. Lee urged all commercial vehicle operators in Sarawak to cooperate with the authorities to ensure a smooth transition. 'We must put the safety of all road users above all else. I appeal to transport operators in Sarawak to work together with the authorities to ensure their vehicles comply with the new SLD requirements. 'Only by working together can we build a safer and more responsible road environment,' he said. Acknowledging the potential challenges faced by the industry, Lee stressed that public safety must take precedence over operational convenience or costs. He added that the ministry will continue engaging stakeholders and working with enforcement agencies such as the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) to provide operators with the necessary information and support for compliance. 'We remain committed to working in tandem with the federal government to raise the overall standard of commercial vehicle safety in Sarawak,' he said. Meanwhile, Sarawak Lorry Associations Coalition (GPLS) president Ling Kah Kiong said members remain uncertain about which SLD models are approved, the costs involved and which workshops are authorised by the authorities to carry out installations. He noted that most lorries registered after 2014 might already have been equipped with the device, meaning those registered before that would be required to install SLDs. Ling, who attended a meeting on the matter in Kuala Lumpur on June 18, said he had raised the authorised models and installers issue with the Federal Transport Ministry but has yet to receive a response. He also questioned the practicality of implementing a uniform policy, citing differences in speed limits between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia. 'I don't think it will function well. We have a difference in minimum speed limit between Peninsula and East Malaysia. This policy seems biased towards the Peninsula because theirs is 90km/h whereas over here, it is 70km/h,' he said when contacted. He added that GPLS members will meet with the state JPJ in Sibu this Saturday to gain clearer insight into the implementation process, including how enforcement will be carried out. commercial vehicles lead speed limitation devices Transport Ministry

Ringgit retreats versus US dollar, analysts eye growth support from 13MP

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — The ringgit reversed its gains in the morning to end lower against the greenback on Thursday as the US Federal Reserve (Fed) kept its benchmark interest rate steady overnight. The Fed funds rate was kept unchanged at 4.25-4.50 per cent. At 6 pm, the local note fell to 4.2650/2730 versus the US dollar from yesterday's close of 4.2410/2455. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the Fed's decision to hold its key interest rate unchanged signalled that the current monetary policy stance is appropriate. 'This implies that the Fed is keen to keep the policy unchanged as concerns over tariff-induced inflation warrant a restrictive monetary policy stance,' he told Bernama. Back home, he noted that the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament today saw the development expenditure (DE) allocation raised to RM430 billion from RM400 billion for the next five-year period from 2026 and 2030. 'This will help promote domestic demand as this will encourage investment activities, which then will help lift Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP) growth. Ultimately, this will be ringgit-positive in the mid to long term,' he said. The 13MP, which aims to drive sustainable growth based on value creation across all sectors, involves RM611 billion in investments to ensure the success of the five-year plan, with RM430 billion being the government's development allocation. The funding from government-linked companies (GLCs) and government-linked investment companies (GLICs) would amount to RM120 billion to support economic growth through domestic direct investment in strategic sectors, and via the public-private partnership (PPP) method, support from the private sector stands at RM61 billion. Of the RM430 billion allocation, he said more than half, or RM227 billion, will be channelled to the economic sector as the main pillar of the country's growth. At the close, the ringgit ended higher against major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.8443/8498 from 2.8646/8678 at the close on Wednesday, appreciated versus the British pound to 5.6426/6532 from 5.6745/6805, and gained against the euro to 4.8766/8857 from 4.8996/9048 previously. The ringgit was also mostly higher against regional peers. It improved against the Philippine peso to 7.31/7.33 from 7.36/7.38, edged higher versus the Thai baht to 13.0448/0753 from 13.0528/0719, and strengthened against the Singapore dollar to 3.2889/2953 from 3.2919/2957. However, it fell against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.1/259.7 from yesterday's 258.5/258.9. — Bernama

TNB receives RM609.03m additional tax assessment for 2023

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has received a notice of additional assessment amounting to RM609.03 million from the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRB) for the 2023 assessment year. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, the utility company said the notice was issued on July 30, 2025. 'In light of the Federal Court's decision on a similar notice issued to TNB for the 2018 assessment year, TNB is currently evaluating its available legal options to address this notice of additional assessment,' the company said. It added that the evaluation also considers the fact that TNB has already applied for investment allowance under Schedule 7B of the Income Tax Act 1967, which includes claims for the 2023 year of assessment. — Bernama
