Puri police conduct mock drill at Jagannath Temple to assess emergency response for Rath Yatra
The objective of the exercise was to assess the preparedness and coordination among cops, temple administration, Health department and other emergency response teams during any medical exigency that may arise on the temple premises, especially during peak hours and festive days, police said.
The mock drill was carried out to strengthen emergency response mechanisms, enhance inter-agency coordination and ensure the safety and well-being of devotees and sevayats inside the temple, they added.
As part of the exercise, a mock medical emergency situation was enacted where a dummy devotee collapsed near the sanctum sanctorum (Garbha Gruha). The medical staff provided first aid to the unwell dummy devotee, following which he was swiftly evacuated on a stretcher through the shortest exit path in the temple.
Police officers, ambulance and medical staff, and officials of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) as well as Odisha Fire and Emergency Service participated in the mock drill. Their roles and responsibilities were assigned as per the standard operating procedure (SOP). The internal communication and alerting systems, including the VHF sets, were tested to ensure their efficiency and timeliness. The drill was carried out without causing any disruption to the temple rituals or the movement of the devotees.
'Ensuring the safety of devotees and sevayats inside the Shree Jagannath Temple is our top priority. This mock drill was designed to test and strengthen our readiness to handle medical emergencies promptly and effectively,' said Puri SP Vinit Agrawal. Such drills are crucial in building confidence among the devotees and the staff while also identifying the potential gaps in the mechanism to deal with any medical emergency. The involvement and support of the local community further strengthened the objective of the exercise, he added.
Meanwhile, earlier in the day during Akshaya Tritiya celebrations, which marked the commencement of 'Rath Nirman' (construction of the chariots) and Chandan Jatra of Lord Jagannath, police formed a human chain to create a dedicated corridor for Palia sevayats to facilitate their smooth entry into the temple amid the huge rush of devotees.

Welfare package announced for sanitation workers OdishaChief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday announced a life insurance cover of Rs 10 lakh for sanitation workers, and a compensation of Rs 30 lakh if they lose their lives on duty. Majhi made the announcement after inaugurating a two-day national workshop on 'Transforming Core Sanitation Work -- Safety, Dignity & Inclusion', organised by the Housing and Urban Development department of the Odisha government. 'It is our moral responsibility to provide sanitation workers justice, safety and dignity,' he said, addressing the programme. 'Key sanitation workers, mostly engaged in cleaning sewage and septic tanks, will be provided with life insurance cover of Rs 10 lakh, assistance of Rs 30 lakh for loss of life in the field,' he said. They will also be given mobile phones and allotted houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), he added. Majhi said a 15-day Statewide campaign will be held from August 15 to make sanitation workers aware of the benefits. He said the Jagannath culture also spreads the message of cleanliness. The Chef Minister said the Odisha government's social welfare scheme for sanitation workers, Garima Yojana, has been an inspiration for many States. He said more than 10,000 sanitation workers from 115 cities and towns of the State have been identified for the benefits. 'Today's workshop is an important platform. From this platform, sanitation workers from different States can learn a lot from each other's experiences,' he said. Representatives of seven States were participating in it. On this occasion, the Chief Minister inaugurated an exhibition of modern equipment related to sanitation work. He also felicitated some sanitation workers. Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, Majhi said it was Modi who launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on August 15, 2014, envisioning sanitation in every household as a prerequisite for India's social and economic development.

Probe into PHC doctor's absence after death of accident victim
Rourkela: Health authorities in Sundargarh district on Wednesday ordered an inquiry into the unauthorised absence of a medical officer from a public health centre (PHC) which allegedly contributed to the death of an accident victim during Rath Yatra on June 27. Bandhu Singh, 43, a resident of Chata village under Badajojda panchayat, had travelled to Soroda on a bike on June 27 for Rath Yatra. While returning home, his two-wheeler collided with a roadside wall, injuring him critically. He was rushed to Soroda PHC, but the doctor was not present. Consequently, Singh's family attempted to transport him to Bisra community health centre, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way. Raj Kumar Singh, the victim's brother, has alleged that Bandhu's life could have been saved had the doctor been present at Soroda PHC. He further claimed that despite directives from the collector mandating presence of doctors during Rath Yatra, there was no doctor in the centre. Hatibari CHC superintendent Md Halim said the doctor was absent from June 4 to 29 without notifying him. "The medical officer of Soroda PHC was on leave without informing me and only sent her joining letter on June 30, citing casual and earned leave," Halim said. "I have withheld her last month's salary and will be writing to the Sundargarh CDMO for further action." Chief district medical and public health officer Suresh Chandra Mohanty said, "This is a grave issue. Appropriate action will be taken against the medical officer of Soroda PHC."

BMC destroys 245kg of stale food during raids over 2 days
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Joint squads of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation and the health department's food safety team have destroyed 245kg of stale and unhygienic food and sweets over the past two days ahead of Bahuda Yatra. In view of jaundice and diarrhoea cases being reported in the city, the food safety raids are being conducted. "On Friday and Saturday, random inspection of food items was carried out in nine locations. Water and food samples were taken for laboratory tests while unhygienic items were dumped at the spot. Sweets, which had fungus and were stored without refrigeration, were also destroyed," said designated officer (food safety), Satyajit Patel. Between June 1 and 20, food safety squads and the BMC's SHINE (Sanitation and Hygiene Inspection for Neat Environment) team destroyed 147kg of stale, unhygienic food during surprise raids. "Earlier, we collected Rs 1.31 lakh in fines from violators.
