'I'm pleased to meet the invitation of my brother, His Excellency President of Iraq Abdul Latif Rashid, after we met in Cairo on the sidelines of the emergency Arab Summit,' Aoun said at Baghdad's airport, adding that he will also meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani and that the visit 'reflects the depth of the historic brotherly ties between Lebanon and Iraq.' 'I'm confident that the talks I will hold today will emphasize the identical viewpoints between Lebanon and Iraq, especially as to deepening coordination and cooperation between them in all security fields, especially in the field of combating terrorism and extremism, based on our common belief that security and stability in our countries are linked, and that confronting security challenges requires the rallying of efforts and the exchange of expertise and information,' the president added.

Aoun holds security meeting on camps disarmament after 'excellent' talks with Berri

by Naharnet Newsdesk 30 May 2025, 15:19 President Joseph Aoun held Friday a security meeting with the Minister of Defense, the Army Commander, and the Intelligence chief over the disarmament of Palestinian camps in Lebanon, which will start in mid-June in three Beirut camps. Aoun and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri had met earlier Friday at the Baabda Palace, in talks described by Berri as "excellent." A joint Lebanese-Palestinian committee met for the first time last week following an accord between Lebanese and Palestinian leaders on disarming Palestinian camps as Lebanon seeks to impose its authority on all its territory. The Lebanese and Palestinian sides agreed on starting a plan to remove weapons from the camps, beginning mid-June in the Beirut camps, and other camps will follow. Lebanon hosts about 222,000 Palestinian refugees, according to the United Nations agency UNRWA, many living in 12 overcrowded official camps. Most are descendants of Palestinians who fled or were expelled from their land during the creation of Israel in 1948.

Zafer Nasser to LBCI: Backs Aoun's approach to Hezbollah arms, slams party's moral judgments

Progressive Socialist Party Secretary General Zafer Nasser voiced support for President Joseph Aoun's handling of the Hezbollah weapons issue, describing it as the most effective and reasonable approach compared to others. Speaking on LBCI's "Nharkom Said" TV show, Nasser said Hezbollah has no right to decide who is patriotic and who isn't, stressing that the party cannot grant 'certificates of nationalism' or accuse others of treason. Commenting on the municipal and local elections, Nasser explained that from the moment elections were announced, the party leadership decided to give local communities the freedom to make their own choices. 'We didn't run formal partisan lists in the traditional sense — it wasn't about the party fielding a list against another,' he said.
