China can buy oil from Iran, hope they'll purchase more from US too: Trump

Express Tribune7 hours ago

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that China can continue to purchase oil from Iran after the US bombed the OPEC member's nuclear facilities, and added that he hoped China would also buy 'plenty' from the United States.
"China can now continue to purchase oil from Iran. Hopefully, they will be purchasing plenty from the US, also," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
Trump's post followed his announcement of a ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel after the US bombing over the weekend of three Iranian nuclear sites. He has publicly rebuked both countries for early violations of the truce.
Earlier in his second term, which began in January, Trump said he was re-imposing "maximum pressure" on Iran over its nuclear program and support for militant groups in the Middle East. His administration imposed a series of Iran-related sanctions, including measures targeting several of China's independent 'teapot' refineries and port terminal operators for purchasing Iranian oil.
The actual lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil would require action by the Treasury and State Departments, as well as Congress. However, the administration could opt not to enforce existing sanctions, potentially allowing more Iranian oil to flow into global markets.
China, the world's largest buyer of Iranian oil, has consistently opposed what it calls Washington's 'abuse of illegal unilateral sanctions.' The Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump's statement.
Any significant increase in Iranian oil purchases by China or other nations could frustrate Saudi Arabia, a key US ally and the world's top oil exporter.
The US State Department referred Reuters' request for comment to the White House, which has yet to respond.

Copper rises on softer dollar

LONDON: Copper prices hit their highest in almost two weeks on Tuesday as the dollar fell and the yuan strengthened after US President Donald Trump's announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. Three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange was up 0.7% at $9,730 a metric ton in official open-outcry trading after touching $9,760.50 for its highest since June 11 earlier in the session. Global markets largely ignored signs that the ceasefire could be fragile, with Trump accusing both Israel and Iran of violating the agreement on Tuesday. The metals market's attention was on continuing outflows from copper stocks in LME-registered warehouses, which combined with large holdings of cash copper contracts and warrants - title documents conferring ownership - to inflate premiums for near-term contracts. The premium for the cash copper contract over the three-month forward eased to $230 a ton on Tuesday. It had closed at $280 on Monday for its highest since November 2021, indicating tightness in the LME copper system. Copper inventories in LME-approved warehouses are down 65% since mid-February at 94,675 tons, their lowest since August 2023, as some traders diverted metal to the United States to benefit from the premium on COMEX copper futures over the LME benchmark while Washington continues to consider potential tariffs on copper imports. 'The metal drips out of the warehouses every day,' one metals trader said. 'LME copper price is so much lower than Comex that the LME (system) can't attract deliveries.' In other LME metals, aluminium fell 0.8% to $2,568 a ton in official activity as the Iran-Israel ceasefire drove down oil prices and removed the immediate threat to the Strait of Hormuz shipping lane for Middle East aluminium producers. Aluminium, the smelting of which requires large amounts of energy, touched a three-month high of $2,654.50 on Monday. LME lead rose 1.1% to $2,025 after hitting $2,029 for its highest since March 31 while zinc added 0.8% to $2,708 after touching $2,715.50, its highest since June 4. Both metals were supported by outflows from the LME stocks and additional metal marked as being prepared for delivery out. Tin climbed 0.2% to $32,750 while nickel gained 0.8% to $14,925.

Iran ready to return to talks as ceasefire with Israel takes hold

TEHRAN: Iran said on Tuesday that it was ready to return to negotiations with the United States, as a fragile ceasefire in its war with Israel took hold after 12 days of strikes that pummelled the Islamic republic's nuclear facilities. But even as he appeared to express willingness to revisit nuclear talks derailed by Israel's surprise attack, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said his country would continue to 'assert its legitimate rights' to the peaceful use of atomic power. The United States on Sunday had joined Israel's campaign with strikes on key nuclear sites. After Iran retaliated with a missile attack Monday night targeting a US base in Qatar, President Donald Trump called for de-escalation, announcing the contours of a truce deal hours later. In a phone call Tuesday, Pezeshkian told his Emirati counterpart 'to explain to them, in your dealings with the United States, that the Islamic Republic of Iran is only seeking to assert its legitimate rights'. 'It has never sought to acquire nuclear weapons and does not seek them,' he was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency, adding that Iran was 'ready to resolve the issues... at the negotiating table'. Israel has said its war, which began on June 13, was aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, an ambition Tehran has long denied holding. After Trump angrily berated both sides for early violations of the truce on Tuesday, Tehran announced it would respect the terms of the deal if Israel did the same, while Israel said it had refrained from further strikes. Both Israel and Iran appeared to claim victory following the announcement of the truce. The Israeli government said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had convened his cabinet 'to announce that Israel had achieved all the objectives of Operation Rising Lion and much more'. It added that it had removed the 'dual existential threat' of Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, while vowing to respond forcefully to any violations of the ceasefire. Iran's top security body, meanwhile, said the Islamic republic's forces had 'compelled' Israel to 'unilaterally' stand down. Its Revolutionary Guards also hailed a last-minute missile salvo fired at Israel as 'a historic and unforgettable lesson to the Zionist enemy'. Israeli rescuers reported four people killed when a missile struck a residential building in the southern city of Beersheba early Tuesday. In Iran, state television said an overnight Israeli strike in the north killed nuclear scientist Mohammad Reza Seddighi Saber, who was under US sanctions. Over the course of its campaign, Israeli strikes hit nuclear and military targets — killing scientists and army brass — as well as residential areas, prompting waves of Iranian missile attacks on Israel. While Iran and Israel have been locked in a shadow war for decades, it has been by far the most destructive confrontation between the arch-foes. The war saw US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites using massive bunker-busting bombs, followed by an Iranian reprisal targeting the United States' largest military facility in the Middle East. Trump shrugged off that response as 'weak', thanking Tehran for giving advanced notice and announcing the outline of the ceasefire just hours later. Iran's National Security Council had said the number of missiles launched at the base 'was the same as the number of bombs that the US had used' against Iran. Ali Vaez, Iran project director for the International Crisis Group, told AFP: 'This was calibrated and telegraphed in a way that would not result in any American casualties, so that there is an off ramp for both sides.'

China stocks jump to three-month high, HK rallies

HONG KONG: China and Hong Kong stocks rose on Tuesday, joining a broader rally across Asia, as global risk appetite improved following US President Donald Trump's announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. At market close, the Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.2% to 3,420.57, the highest level since March 20. The blue-chip CSI300 Index also climbed 1.2% to a one-month high. Hong Kong benchmark Hang Seng was up 2.1%, the biggest single-day gain in over five weeks. Around the region, MSCI's Asia ex-Japan stock index was firmer by 2.3%, while Japan's Nikkei index was up 1.1%. Markets reacted positively to the news that US President Donald Trump announced a complete ceasefire between Israel and Iran, potentially ending the 12-day war that saw millions flee Tehran and prompted fears of further escalation in the war-torn region. Risk sentiment in China markets probably won't get much worse from here, and further dips on Middle East tensions might signal a new round of buying opportunities, analysts at Bank of China (International) Securities said in a note. On Tuesday, the CSI AI index led onshore markets with a 2.2% rally, while the financial sector sub-index climbed 1.4% and the rare earth sector added 1.8%. Tech firms and car makers led gains in Hong Kong, with the Hang Seng Automobile Index adding over 3% and the Hang Seng Tech Index climbing 2.1%. China's yuan also strengthened to its highest level in nearly two weeks against a broadly weaker US dollar on Tuesday.
