Dibba Al Hisn Duo Theatre Festival Continues its Activities

Life and Dream: Storytelling and Memory
The Moroccan theatrical performance "Life and Dream", presented to the audience on the third night of the festival, revolved around the relationship between storytelling and reviving memory and reclaiming a lost past. The play, presented by the Al Shamat Theatre Company, was written and directed by Bouselham Al Daif and stars Hind Baloula and Soufiane Naim.
Sharjah Arab Theatre Forum
As part of the festival's third day programme, the second and final sessions of the 20th Sharjah Arab Theatre Forum were held at 5:00 PM. The session was held under the theme "Theatre and Life." The sessions were moderated by Emirati director and actor Dr. Khalid Al-Bannai.
As part of the training programme, the festival hosted a workshop on its second day, "Using Puppets in School Theatre," at the Dibba Al-Hisn Society for Culture, Arts, and Theatre. The workshop, attended by 30 trainees, was supervised by Lebanese artist Dr. Karim Dakroub. Dakroub began by presenting a puppetry demonstration, then moved on to engaging attendees in practical exercises to create a "stick puppet" using various materials. The trainees then participated in crafting a puppet and imagining a story within its framework, embodying its aesthetics and meanings.
At the conclusion of the workshop, Alia Al-Zaabi, the festival coordinator, presented the supervisor with a certificate of thanks and appreciation.

Festival President Princess Rym Ali explained that the theme reflects a commitment to showcasing films that defy convention and embrace the authenticity of lived experience. 'This edition embraces the unpredictable and the deeply human in the midst of a volatile and rapidly changing world,' she stated. 'Life doesn't follow a script; and recent years have certainly been unscripted. So, in this edition, we pay tribute to storytellers who dare to explore and narrate moments that feel more lived than written.' The festival's official poster, designed by HUE Innovation & Design, captures this spirit with a visual style that introduces both a playful tone and a subtle message of hope, reinforcing the core message of spontaneity and resilience. This year also marks a significant milestone for the festival with the introduction of its first-ever 'Country of Honour.' Ireland has been selected for this role, with a dedicated spotlight on Irish cinema featured in the programme. Festival Director Nada Doumani highlighted the thematic synergy between Irish and Arab films, noting that both cultures use cinema to explore identity, resilience, and the path toward peace. She emphasised that within the framework of 'A World Unscripted,' Irish and Arab stories find common ground in their exploration of human experience. Doumani also pointed to Ireland's principled stance and strong support for Palestine and human rights, which further resonates with the region and the spirit of this year's edition. Irish Ambassador to Jordan, Marianne Bolger, added: 'I am exceptionally proud that Ireland has been selected as the Festival's first Country of Honour, and I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the President of the Festival and its organisers. Ireland has a long history in cinema and filmmaking, and we are delighted to work closely with the AIFF to bring a collection of Irish films to Jordan that will hopefully resonate with audiences. I believe each Irish film on display will speak, in its own way, to the theme of 'A World Unscripted', and I look forward to seeing how these movies are perceived by Jordanian viewers.'

Saudi Film Commission highlights national cinema at SXSW London
As part of its participation the commission will screen a selection of short Saudi films under the Saudi Film Nights initiative. The Saudi Film Commission has participated in the first-ever European edition of the South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival, which is taking place in London until June 7, 2025. The event, known for gathering leading professionals across the creative industries, offers a global platform for innovation and collaboration through a wide range of programming, including film and TV screenings, exhibitions, panel discussions, live performances and networking opportunities, according to a report by Saudi Press Agency. As part of its contribution, the Commission will present a curated programme of short Saudi films under the 'Saudi Film Nights' initiative, designed to introduce international audiences to Saudi storytelling and support the global visibility of emerging national talent. In addition, the Commission will host a panel discussion titled 'Empowering the Film Industry in Saudi Arabia: From Vision to Reality.' The session will delve into cinema's role in shaping national identity, preserving heritage, and advancing Saudi content as a powerful cultural tool. Inside the Saudi pavilion, visitors will find an exhibition highlighting the achievements of the Kingdom's burgeoning film industry. Featured works include films that have achieved notable box office success, been selected for international film festivals, or received global accolades—emphasising the sector's rapid growth and increasing international recognition. The Saudi Film Commission will be joined by several other creative bodies within the Kingdom, including the Music Commission, the Culinary Arts Commission, the Fashion Commission, and MOCX, offering a comprehensive display of Saudi Arabia's diverse cultural expressions. This collaborative presence at SXSW London reflects the Film Commission's strategic efforts to elevate the Kingdom's profile in global cinema, foster cross-cultural dialogue, and position Saudi Arabia as a leading creative hub in the region.

Sharjah honours four Jordanian writers in Amman Forum
Under the patronage of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the 22nd edition of the Sharjah Cultural Honours Forum was launched in the Jordanian capital, Amman. The forum celebrated four Jordanian literary figures: translator Prof. Dr Mohammad Al Bakhit, critic Dr Nabil Haddad, academic and critic Mahmoud Al Shalabi, and poet Mohammad Samhan. The forum was held in line with the directives of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah to honour literary figures who have significantly contributed to contemporary Arab culture. This marks the fifth time the forum has taken place in Jordan, having previously recognised 16 Jordanian creatives in earlier editions. The honouring ceremony took place at the National Library Department in Amman, in the presence of Abdullah Bin Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of Department of Culture; Mohammed Ibrahim Al Qaseer, Director of Cultural Affairs at the Department; Hamad Al Matroushi, Chargé d'Affaires at the UAE Embassy in Jordan; Dr. Nidal Al Ayasrah, Secretary-General of the Jordanian Ministry of Culture; National Library Director Rouba Al Shamaila; and a large audience of Jordanian and Arab writers, intellectuals, and cultural figures. STRONG HISTORIC TIES In his speech, Abdullah Al Owais expressed joy at the continued fraternal gatherings that enhance bonds of affection, particularly when united by shared Arab values and cooperation. He highlighted that this spirit is embodied in the strong historic ties between the United Arab Emirates and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, under the leadership of both nations. He said, "Today we are presenting a living example of these principles through the Sharjah Cultural Honours Forum, which aims to recognise cultural figures who have enriched the Arab world with their literary creativity in various fields. After travelling across the Arab world, the forum returns for the fifth time to Jordan to honour a new group of distinguished Jordanian writers who have remained true to their craft and offered a wealth of diverse literary contributions.' Al Owais extended sincere thanks to the Jordanian Ministry of Culture for its ongoing cooperation, which has led to the successful organisation of numerous cultural activities. In his address, Dr Nidal Al Ayasrah welcomed the attendees, "Welcome to Amman, which sends its warmest greetings to Sharjah through this rich cultural tapestry, representing a model of collaboration between Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. It is a great occasion to honour a distinguished group of our nation's creatives across diverse literary fields, who have shown commitment, determination, and a luminous vision in their cultural projects.' He added, "Writers, poets, critics, and historians offer their insight so that others may benefit, often sacrificing their time and energy for the greater cultural good. The moments that bring them joy are those when words come alive, when wisdom and philosophy are shared, when poetry is in the air, and when younger generations connect with their rich Arab heritage.' 'NOBLE CIVILISATIONALS INITIATIVE ' Speaking on behalf of the honourees, Professor Dr Mohammad Al Bakhit said, "On behalf of myself and my fellow honourees, I extend our sincere gratitude to His Highness, the Ruler of Sharjah, for his noble civilisational initiative to recognise those who have served culture in their communities, countries, and among their audiences-particularly in these challenging times facing the Arab world and its intellectuals. These circumstances call for creative initiatives capable of transforming reality and overcoming obstacles, so that intellectuals may play an active role in enriching civilisational life.' The honouring ceremony was accompanied by an exhibition showcasing a range of publications from the Sharjah Department of Culture. Among the featured titles were Sharjah Cultural Magazine, Al Rafid, Al Qawafi, Theatre Magazine, Al Heera from Sharjah, and a collection of books across various literary genres. The exhibition attracted a large audience, with many keen to browse and acquire these culturally rich titles.
