Second Lady of the United States Usha Vance and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick will address a leadership summit hosted by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum next week where three pioneering business leaders from the QUAD nations will be honoured for their leadership.The US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) will host the eighth edition of its Leadership Summit on June 2 in Washington, D.C, where Lutnick will deliver the keynote address, sharing "his insights on strengthening the US-India strategic and economic partnership to achieve" the goal set by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for $500 billion in bilateral trade.Vance, the first Indian-American in the role of Second Lady, will speak at a fireside chat.USISPF said Vance's presence symbolises the deepening partnership between the world's oldest and largest democracies, and highlights the robust strength of the people-to-people ties.USISPF will also present the 2025 Global Leadership Awards to IBM Chairman Arvind Krishna, Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla and Hitachi Executive Chairman Toshiaki Higashihara "for their outstanding contributions in strengthening the US-India-Japan economic partnership."This is the first time that business leaders from the QUAD grouping of Australia, India, Japan and the US will be honoured at the USISPF summit.USISPF said that IBM, led by Krishna, has accelerated global digital transformation through advancing cutting-edge research in AI, cloud, quantum computing, and blockchain, with India playing a pivotal role in its global R&D and talent ecosystem.Under Birla's leadership, the Aditya Birla Group is the largest Indian greenfield investor in the United States, with investments exceeding $15 billion.Hitachi, under the leadership of Higashihara, continues to expand its investments in infrastructure, mobility, and digital innovation, closely aligning with key US-India -Japan-India collaboration in energy, transportation, and technology.The summit will also feature conversations with Ambassador of India to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra, Co-Chair, Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans Senator Steve Daines and Representative Rich McCormick and USISPF Board members."USISPF was founded with the single goal of uniting the two most powerful and robust democracies," John Chambers, Chairman, USISPF; Founder & CEO, JC2 Ventures, said.USISPF President and CEO Mukesh Aghi said the organisation is proud to welcome Lutnick, Vance and recognise exemplary business leaders who have strengthened the US-India-Japan corridor."These three leading democracies -- together representing well over $35 trillion -- are united by a shared commitment to strengthening supply chains and upholding a rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific and beyond," Aghi said.He added that with Japan's strength in advanced engineering manufacturing, India's robust economic growth, demographic dividend and engineering talent and the US innovation economy and capital, this trilateral partnership is uniquely positioned to drive progress across critical sectors.USISPF is an independent not-for-profit institution focused on strengthening the US-India partnership.

Higher steel tariffs to dent exports as companies look at other markets

Several US importers have gone slow on fresh orders as costs went up significantly after the imposition of 25 per cent duty, although India was not seen to be worse off, given that the same duty applies to all countries. But if Trump decides to move ahead with his threat, several American firms will have to slow down production as such duties are seen to be unviable and unsustainable. This will also reduce demand for inputs. "The economic impact will be significant. US steel prices are already high, at around $984 per metric tonne - far above European prices at $690 and Chinese prices at $392. The doubling of tariffs is expected to push US prices to about $1,180, squeezing US domestic industries such as automotive, construction, and manufacturing that depend on steel and aluminium as key inputs. These sectors may face hundreds of dollars in additional material costs per tonne, driving up prices, reducing competitiveness, and risking job losses or inflationary pressures," said trade research body GTRI. Tech firm fined Rs 1 lakh for levelling allegations against TN govt official
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has imposed a cost of Rs 1 lakh on Cognizant Technology Solutions Private Limited for levelling unsubstantiated 'serious allegations' against a top labour department official, a quasi-judicial officer, in connection with an order passed to set aside the termination of an employee of the firm. Justice AD Maria Clete passed the orders while dismissing the petitions filed by the subsidiary of the US-based tech firm challenging the order of the special joint commissioner of labour (JCL), who is the appellate authority. The JCL, by an order dated October 18, 2019, set aside the order of the firm issued on December 21, 2015 to terminate Sivakumar Krishnamurthy, an associate director of the company, from the service on the grounds of under-performance and causing loss to the firm. The JCL also ordered his reinstatement with back wages on an appeal filed by him under the TN Shops and Establishments Act, 1947. The matter was entangled in several litigations as Krishnamurthy filed petitions in the high court seeking to expedite the hearing and disposal, and later, for transferring the matter from the JCL concerned. After the JCL passed the orders, the tech firm moved the high court with petitions challenging the orders and levelled certain allegations and even questioned the official's integrity stating she had favoured the same person who sought transfer of the case. Justice Maria Clete remarked, 'If the allegations made by the petitioner (Cognizant) against the statutory appellate authority are to be taken at face value, it would render it virtually impossible for any authority to discharge its quasi-judicial functions.'

BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad-led all-party delegation reached London on Saturday as part of India's efforts to reach out to partner countries to highlight its firm stance against cross-border terrorism and its policy of zero-tolerance to terrorism. Meanwhile, BJP MP Baijayant Panda slammed Pakistan in Algeria. 1. An all-party delegation led by BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad arrived in London on Saturday to reiterate India's zero-tolerance stance on terrorism. Upon his arrival, Ravi Shankar Prasad said, "We are here in London. We will keep our stance on terrorism effectively, here. We believe that we will get that support here as well, the way we have received the support in those three countries." The multi-party delegation, comprising MPs Daggubati Purandeswari, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Ghulam Ali Khatana, Amar Singh, Samik Bhattacharya, M Thambidurai and former Union minister of state MJ Akbar and Ambassador Pankaj Saran, is scheduled to meet with community groups, think tanks, parliamentarians and diaspora leaders. The delegation landed in the UK after completing visits to France, Italy, and Denmark, where they engaged with government officials, diaspora, and other stakeholders to raise awareness about India's zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism. From the UK, the delegation will head for discussions and meetings with a cross-section of parliamentarians, political leaders and diaspora groups in the European Union (EU) and Germany. 2. Earlier during the Denmark leg of the visit, Ravi Shankar Prasad strongly responded to a group of Pakistani nationals who raised anti-India slogans outside a venue hosting the Indian delegation in Copenhagen. He dismissed the protest as an act of "desperation" and advised people to "ignore them with impunity" "I was very surprised to see Pakistanis here raising programme is going very are getting wide handlers in Pakistan must have told them to do something. "The United Nations Security Council, of which Algeria is a member today, has sanctioned and banned a number of terrorist organisations and individuals, among them 52 terror organisations and terrorists are openly operating in Pakistan today," he added. The Group 1 delegation, led by Baijayant Panda, Member of Parliament and former Minister, includes senior parliamentarians and officials such as Dr. Nishikant Dubey, S. Phangnon Konyak, Rekha Sharma, Asaduddin Owaisi, Satnam Singh Sandhu, Ghulam Nabi Azad, and former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla. 4. Group 6 of the all-party delegation, led by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, arrived in Madrid. AAP MP Dr Ashok Kumar Mittal said, "This is our last destination in this tour. We will meet the Indian diaspora first and tell them about Operation Sindoor. Then, we will meet the people from the government, intellectuals, and academia. We will convey our message that India is determined to eliminate Pakistan-sponsored terrorism from India and the entire world." 5. AIMIM chief and MP Asaduddin Owaisi said in Algeria, "It's not only a question of South Asia. We are the 4th largest economy. What will happen? Do you want all this carnage to spread to different parts of South Asia? No. It is in the interest of world peace to control Pakistan, which is the main sponsor of terrorism. An all-party Indian parliamentary delegation, led by Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SCP) MP Supriya Sule, paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at the Indian Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as part of their diplomatic outreach visit. 7. In Colombia, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, leading the all-party delegation to the South American country, confirmed Bogota's withdrawal of the controversial statement after meeting Vice Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio and her senior colleagues. India has sent several all-party delegations to showcase India's resolve against terrorism and garner international support for a united stand against this global threat. The Indian government's diplomatic outreach efforts aim to strengthen partnerships with countries in East and Southeast Asia, emphasising the need for a collective response to the threat of terrorism. India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in a decisive military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the Pahalgam terror attack, with India carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7. Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. The Indian side responded strongly to the Pakistani actions. The on-ground hostilities ended with an understanding of stopping the military actions following talks between the directors general of military operations of both sides on May 10.
