Ivan Toney's England recall set to propel his status to Saudi Arabia poster boy
England boss Thomas Tuchel gave Ivan Toney a call-up despite joining Saudi side Al Ahli and his decision has given the Middle East league a huge PR lift amid claims players only join them for the money
Ivan Toney is set to become a poster boy for the Saudi Pro League. Toney's shock return to the England squad for next week's World Cup qualifier against Andorra in Barcelona and the friendly with Senegal at the City Ground is seen as a landmark moment for the Saudi dream of one day eclipsing the Premier League as the biggest domestic football competition in the world.
Cristiano Ronaldo remains the star attraction in the desert - and could now be joined by his Portugal team-mate Bruno Fernandes.
But Thomas Tuchel's decision to bring Toney back into the Three Lions pack has given the Arab nation a massive PR lift as they look to clear themselves of the accusation that any player moving to Saudi is motivated by money.
It was thought that the 29-year-old striker had sacrificed his international career when he decided to cash in on a three-year contract with Al-Ahli worth a staggering £63million when he left Brentford in a £40million deal last summer.
Jordan Henderson was ruthlessly axed from Gareth Southgate 's plans after chasing riches in the desert with Al-Ettifaq - and even a return to Europe with Ajax after just six months later did not prevent the midfielder from missing the cut for last summer's Euros.
New Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel has no such concerns. The German recalled Henderson to his first squad - and now Toney is back in the fold after a productive first season in Saudi.
Tuchel's first squad, named for the opening qualifiers against Albania and Latvia, included Dan Burn, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Marcus Rashford and Dominic Solanke as well as Henderson.
Ollie Watkins has now been added alongside Toney as the England boss looks for alternatives for skipper Harry Kane. Toney scored 28 goals in 42 games in all competitions as Al-Ahli lifted the Asian Champions League and was on target 23 times in 30 league games.
He is being touted for a possible return to the Prem, but that now appears unlikely following his return to the England set-up.
Toney won the last of his six caps when he came on as a substitute against Spain in the Euro 2024 final - and he will now be looking to add to his solitary international goal after being given the nod by Tuchel.
Al-Ahli now want Fernandes to join Toney at the club. Landing the Manchester United captain when manager Ruben Amorim has made it clear that Fernandes is key to his Old Trafford plans would represent another piece of astute business - even if it comes at the cost of a £100million transfer fee and wages of £650,000-a-week.

Kelleher, who picked up a league winners' medal with the Reds this season, has made no secret of his desire for regular first-team football and with Mark Flekken seemingly heading for Bayer Leverkusen, looks sets to be granted his wish by Thomas Frank. Everton defender O'Brien, who will hope to play alongside his fellow Cork man in Friday's friendly clash with Senegal in Dublin, told a press conference: 'It doesn't take for me to say how good he is. I think everyone knows how good he is and what he's achieved over the last couple of years. 'If it goes through, it's a great move for him, to become a number one in the Premier League. 'It's a great move for him, to go and play every week is very important and he's more than good enough. Brentford have done well this season so it's a club he can progress and do a lot at. 'I think everyone knows how good he is and how high his ceiling is. He can push on and do great things.' Kelleher, who also has two Carabao Cup wins to his name, made 20 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool during the season which has just finished but had to play second fiddle to Brazilian Alisson Becker once again. He has been open in the recent past while on international duty about his need to play every week and, having made the Ireland jersey his own in the midst of Gavin Bazunu's injury problems, seems ready now to set out on a new path. O'Brien said: 'It's a difficult one because he is number two at Liverpool, but he's obviously got a really good keeper ahead of him. 'He's definitely up there with the best keepers in the Premier League and I think next year he'll show that he's up there with the best. 'I think he's proven in the games he has played for Liverpool that he can be up there with some of the best keepers in the league.' Although O'Brien and Kelleher live close to each other on Merseyside, they are separated by the city's football divide and the Blues defender, who joined the Toffees from Lyon last summer, admits he does not see a lot of his compatriot outside of their international commitments. He said: 'I think that's just because in football, you've other things going on. 'He lives in the same area as me. I suppose it would be difficult if we were seen together as Merseyside rivals, some fans wouldn't take it well.'

Man Utd 'confident' of landing Bryan Mbeumo in £50m deal as transfer plan clear
Manchester United are set for a busy summer in the transfer market and already a pattern is becoming clear at Old Trafford ahead of Ruben Amorim's first pre-season at the club Manchester United have moved on from Liam Delap and will now look to sign Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo in a £50million deal this summer. The Red Devils are growing increasingly confident of being able to lure the forward to Old Trafford after the striker indicated he wanted to move to the club. United will be required to fight off interest from the likes of Newcastle and Arsenal to secure the Cameroon international. Ruben Amorim is said to be keen to make Mbeumo, who scored 20 goals in the Premier League in 2024/25, an integral member of his team. The Red Devils have returned their attention to Mbeumo after missing out to Chelsea for Ipswich Town Forward Delap. The 22-year-old former Man City youngster is primed to be announced as the Blues' newest signing after undergoing his medical, with Chelsea having agreed to pay his £30m release clause. United will hope to continue to strengthen Amorim's hand after announcing their first deal of the summer of the weekend. And in 2022/23, the signings of Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro stole the headlines, though United did take advantage of Christian Eriksen being available for free It perhaps comes as little surprise that the club would look from within the division after struggling to 15th in 2024/25. And United's issues were all the more evident domestically, as they earned their way to the final before coming unstuck against British opposition in Tottenham. United boss Amorim has previously highlighted why he believes issues have been found when playing more familiar opposition. "When you play against any team in England, the physicality is there," he said. "If you don't have physicality, you will struggle a lot. Antony is so much better now in Spain. There are many factors, but I guarantee you it's physicality." And bringing players in who already have Premier League experience, and have thrived in the environment, such as Cunha and Mbeumo, would not only improve the team but potentially require less time to adjust. After a dismal start for Amorim, he will hope such players at least offer part of the answer.
