Apple Watch Ultra 3 needs these 3 improvements to make it a must-buy upgrade
Case in point: the Series 10 actually has more screen real estate than the Ultra 2. The 46mm model of the Series 10 boasts a 1,220 mm² display compared to just 1,185 mm² on the Ultra 2. If you want as much screen as possible, you're better off picking the larger Series 10.
Now, let's be clear. I'm not talking about things that would be nice to have on the Apple Watch Ultra 3. My colleague Dan Bracaglia wrote about that here and listed things like a blood pressure alert and daily sleep score. No. I'm talking about fundamentals that Apple has to bring to the table to make sure the Ultra 3 really is the best Apple Watch you can buy.
We're getting into the nerdy details here, but if you're going to be paying $800/£800 or more for a smartwatch, you deserve the best. The Series 10 made the upgrade to an LTPO3 OLED display, while the current Ultra 2 remains with an LTP02 OLED.
This refers to the backplane of the screen and, specifically, the ability to combine the electron mobility of the pixels, which is crucial for high refresh rates, with low power consumption. The better the LTPO OLED screen on the device, the more responsive it'll seem without impacting battery, especially when it's always on. And if the Watch Ultra 3 is going to be a true multi-day adventure watch, it needs to have the latest screen tech up front.
Along with the larger screen I mentioned up top, the Apple Watch Series 10 also benefits from a wide-angle OLED screen, which means you get better viewing angles from the sides. I can't begin to describe how important it is on a watch to get the widest visibility possible.
If I were a marketing guy, I'd tell you a wide-angle OLED screen on the Ultra 3 would come in useful when you're hanging off El Capitan by your fingertips and only able to tilt your wrist a fraction to check the display. But, in reality, it's more likely you'll be schlepping bags of groceries from the supermarket to your car and need to just glance at your watch to see if you'll be late picking the kids up after school.

Regardless, more visibility is always better, and the Watch Ultra 3 needs to surpass the Series 10 in this regard.
This one's a bit of a no-brainer, but again, the Series 10 launched last year with a more powerful chipset than the supposed "Ultra" watch in Apple's line-up. I'll put this one down to just release cadence. Of course Apple is going to bring out a more performant chip each year and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is a 2023 device.
Still, a jump to S10 or, more likely, S11 for the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is an absolute baseline upgrade Apple has to offer. Making these essential improvements will mean the Ultra option really is the best device Apple customers can buy.
The above points are what I would consider essential for the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and current rumors seem to agree we'll be getting these updates and then some. In addition to the above, some of the claims suggest the Ultra 3 will include 5G cellular, high blood pressure detection, and even satellite messaging support for emergency situations.
The best news of all is that, with Apple's rumored iPhone 17 event likely less than a month away at this point, we really don't have long to wait until we see the Apple Watch Ultra 3 for real. It's been two long years without an Ultra upgrade but I for one think it'll be worth the wait.

The iPhone 17 Pro's Pixel-like camera bar could house a new camera with a much longer zoom

The latest iPhone 17 Pro rumors point to Apple's premium flagship handset getting a new telephoto camera with 8x optical zoom, up from 5x zoom on the iPhone 16 Pro. What's more, this new camera is tipped to make use of moving components that could allow for continuous optical zoom between an as-yet unknown range of focal lengths. That's rarely-seen technology, usually reserved for phones that are specifically designed for photography like the Sony Xperia 1 VI, and the idea of such niche tech coming to one of the world's most popular phones is properly exciting. So why aren't I jumping for joy? On paper, I should be. Most flagship phones – and some particularly well-specced mid-range handsets like the Oppo Reno 13 Pro – come with a telephoto camera, offering optical zoom through the addition of a specialized lens and sensor. However, in order to create a continuous zoom between different lenses, phones typically use digital zoom to close the distance between their various lenses. For example, a phone with a main camera at 1x zoom and a telephoto camera at 3x optical zoom will digitally zoom the main camera to achieve 2x zoom. If those aforementioned iPhone 17 Pro rumors hold true, the new telephoto camera will add even more reach and flexibility to what is already one of the best camera phones. It could also explain the new camera housing that many rumors and leaks predict the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max to launch with. We previously thought that this design change was a purely aesthetic choice, but this Pixel-style camera bar could, in fact, house a periscope lens or other tech to support the new zoom camera. With that all said, I can't help but wonder whether I'd actually use this (admittedly very cool) new feature. Once the excitement around the iPhone 17 Pro's possible 8x zoom camera settles, will it still be worth using? Three times is the charm I'm a maximalist when it comes to tech – I like to have the best specs possible, and for a long time, I found myself pining after the 5x or even 10x telephoto lenses fitted to some of the best camera phones. I specifically remember feeling amazed when the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra launched with a 10x optical zoom camera. But to be honest, it's rare that I find myself zooming in that much – apparently I'm not the only one, either, as Samsung scaled down its long-range zoom camera from 10x to 5x with the release of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. As I mentioned before, unless you're zooming into or beyond the 10x mark, a 10x zoom camera will be of no use. If you ask me, the sweet spot is actually a 3x telephoto camera, like the one the iPhone 15 Pro had before it was upped to 5x on the iPhone 16 Pro. It's not that I don't see the point in longer zoom lenses. In fact, last year, I wrote that the Oppo Find X8 Pro's 6x zoom camera had opened up new possibilities when it comes to mobile photography. It's just that 3x strikes a better balance between reach and everyday usefulness; a 3x zoom lens brings details forward without feeling cramped, and the smaller lens distortion is ideal for more natural portraits. I'm not the only 3x zoom fan in the TechRadar office, either – last year, Phones Editor Axel Metz wrote that the iPhone 15 Pro's 3x telephoto camera was his go-to for natural and more professional-looking social media pics, like those below. Image 1 of 5 Image 2 of 5 Image 3 of 5 Image 4 of 5 Image 5 of 5 An 8x zoom camera – or even better, a lens that continuously zooms from, say, 5x to 8x – would be a win for certain users: concertgoers, nature photographers, maybe even portrait photographers who don't mind standing pretty far away. But without an intermediate telephoto lens to bridge the long gap between 1x and 8x, for me, this won't be a selling point. Even the Galaxy S21 Ultra switched to a 3x camera before you got to the full 10x zoom, and while the iPhone's digital zoom is excellent, there'd surely be a noticeable loss of quality at zoom levels that don't activate the new camera. I'd be reluctant to give up my 3x lens without some kind of software magic to get around that. We're expecting the iPhone 17 series to be revealed in September 2025, so we hopefully won't have to wait long to see what Apple's cooking up. What do you think about this rumor? The latest leak though suggests Apple might not have got the balance right for me. According to Fixed Focus Digital – a leaker with a reasonable track record – posting on Weibo (via GSMArena), the iPhone 17 Air will have an A19 Pro chipset, just like the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Except, it won't quite be the same here, as this source claims that the Air's version will have five GPU cores, while the version used by the Pro phones will have six. It remains to be seen how much difference that will make, but it would mean the iPhone 17 Air is less powerful than the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max – though still probably more powerful than the base iPhone 17, which will reportedly have a non-Pro version of the A19. Battery, screen, and camera compromises But this isn't the Air's only rumored compromise, as the same source also says that it will have a worse screen and battery than the iPhone 17 Pro. They don't get specific here as to the ways in which they're worse, but presumably this means a lower battery capacity. As for the screen, that's probably a reference to a previous claim they made that the base iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air wouldn't have a variable refresh rate, and in turn therefore probably wouldn't have an always-on display – though they will at least apparently have 120Hz screens. So that's quite a lot of compromises, and – coupled with the iPhone 17 Air probably just having one rear camera – this would almost certainly be too much of a compromise for me. Really, it seems only those who value aesthetics over everything else would choose to purchase the Air. Yet there might be a lot of buyers like that, with Fixed Focus Digital predicting that the iPhone 17 Air will be a hit. So it will be interesting to see how well it actually does. We should find out in September, as that's when the entire iPhone 17 series is expected to launch. More details of the iPhone 17 have leaked – and one upgrade sounds particularly exciting

Another batch of iPhone 17 rumors have appeared The iPhone 17 Pro Max model is tipped to get a camera upgrade It seems the SIM card slot is staying in some markets There are a lot of iPhone 17 rumors and leaks to keep up with at the moment, and the latest to catch our attention have apparently revealed some more details about the most expensive models arriving next month: the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max. First up, tipster Majin Bu (via GSMArena) has posted a couple of photos that supposedly shows the SIM card slot for the iPhone 17 Pro. While the iPhones have gone eSIM-only in the US, that's not the case in international markets, and it looks as though it's not going to be the case with the 2025 handsets either. Next, we've got images purporting to show the internals of the iPhone 17 Pro Max from well-known leaker Yeux1122 (via Wccftech). We can see the same metal-covered battery design used in last year's iPhone 16 Pro, which improves thermal management, and the bigger camera module that's previously been rumored. Also of note are two different battery shape designs, which are presumably for iPhones with and without physical SIM card slots. It's a sign of the accommodations Apple has to make for its phones in different markets across the world. Camera upgrades Perhaps the most exciting leak of the latest batch comes from another seasoned tipster, Setsuna Digital (via Notebookcheck), which suggests the iPhone 17 Pro Max will come with the most powerful telephoto camera we've seen yet. It's not clear if that means the most powerful telephoto camera in the iPhone series or in smartphones in general, but it's a promising potential upgrade either way. The iPhone 16 Pro Max comes equipped with a triple-lens 48MP+48MP+12MP camera on the back, with 5x optical zoom courtesy of the telephoto lens. We don't know how much the optical zoom or the megapixel count might be upgraded this year, but there's already been talk of 8x optical zoom this year, which is part of the reason for the redesign of the back of the case we're expecting. Apple might also unveil a pro-level camera app alongside the new phones. We shouldn't have too long to wait to see how accurate or otherwise these leaks are: if Apple sticks to its usual schedule, the iPhone 17 series will be announced in September, with Tuesday, September 9 the likely day and date.
