Malaysia showcases culture, flavours in Hanoi from Wednesday to Sunday

HANOI: A dynamic series of cultural, culinary, and artistic events will unfold in the Vietnamese capital as "Madani Malaysia Week 2025" takes place from today to Sunday (July 30-Aug 3). According to Vietnam News Agency (VNA), highlights of the programme include Selera Malaysia, a food festival offering guests an immersive experience in Malaysian cuisine, complemented by traditional music and dance performances. A dedicated seminar will also spotlight the "Visit Malaysia 2026" tourism campaign. The main festivities are scheduled for Aug 2–3 at Aeon Mall Long Bien, with the official opening ceremony to be chaired by the Malaysia's Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister. At a press conference on July 29, Malaysian Ambassador to Vietnam Datuk Tan Yang Thai emphasised Malaysia's multicultural heritage, noting that its cultural richness has helped build enduring ties of respect and understanding with Vietnam. He underlined that the week is more than a cultural display — it is a heartfelt invitation to the Vietnamese public to explore Malaysia's heritage first-hand. This year's programme is guided by the Malaysia Madani initiative, promoted by the Malaysian Prime Minister, which champions the values of sustainability, compassion, and trust. Through the festival, the country aims to deepen bilateral cooperation in tourism, culture, education, and trade. Last year, Malaysia welcomed over 336,000 visitors from Vietnam. In the first half of 2025 alone, more than 168,000 travellers moved between the two countries. As of March, there were 167 direct flights per week connecting the two nations, with an increasing number of night flights offering greater travel flexibility and diverse tourism options, according to the ambassador. — BERNAMA

Work begins on abandoned Residensi Hektar Gombak project

KUALA LUMPUR: Restoration works for the Residensi Hektar Gombak project commenced today and are expected to be completed by 2027, said Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. He said the project, which had been left idle since 2018 due to various issues, involved 2,400 residential units and was among the largest abandoned housing projects in the country. "After months of hard work, the National Housing Department and the Housing and Local Government Ministry, in line with the Malaysia Madani aspirations, have successfully secured a new capital injection of RM125 million to revive this project. "I am pleased to announce that restoration works will commence today," he told a press conference after conducting a working visit to the project site here. He said the initiative to revive the project was part of the Madani government's proactive efforts, which also included the establishment of a special task force to address the issue of abandoned private housing projects. Nga also said he would not hesitate to blacklist the developers of the Residensi Hektar Gombak project and their board members if they failed to complete the project and hand over the keys by 2027, thereby preventing them from further involvement in the industry. Meanwhile, he said that, to date, a total of 1,127 abandoned housing projects involving 135,211 buyers had been successfully revived, with a combined development value of RM106.48 billion. Apart from the Residensi Hektar Gombak, he said the government had managed to revive several other abandoned housing developments, including the estate housing project in Selangor, which had been abandoned for 27 years; the Bestari Jaya project in Selangor, which was left idle for 20 years; and the Putera Kiansom People's Housing Project in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, which began during the Eighth Malaysia Plan. Nga said the success in reviving the projects reflected the seriousness and commitment of the Madani government to ensuring the well-being of the people through a proactive approach and cooperation from all parties, including civil servants. "I hope those affected will also appreciate the government's efforts and the contributions of our civil servants, especially those who have worked overtime to ensure all parties come on board," he said. — BERNAMA

LHDN flags 5,800 taxpayers for failing to submit income tax forms

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 5,800 taxpayers have been identified for failing to submit their Income Tax Return Forms (BNCP) through the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia's (LHDN) e-Invoicing monitoring system. Following compliance actions aimed at taxpayers at risk of failing to report their income, LHDN reported that these individuals subsequently submitted their BNCP, declaring a total income of RM484 million, which contributed an additional RM82 million in tax revenue. In a statement issued today, LHDN stated that since the implementation of e-Invoicing, it has been receiving data from individuals and companies conducting business transactions since August 1 of the previous year. The department has been actively monitoring taxpayer data verified in the MyInvois system. This ongoing monitoring aims to ensure voluntary and consistent tax compliance, in line with the principle of fairness in the country's taxation system. 'As of today, LHDN has processed approximately 413 million e-Invoices, with over 83,000 taxpayers participating. This includes taxpayers from phases one to three, who are required to implement e-Invoicing, as well as voluntary participants from phases four and five,' the statement read. LHDN expressed satisfaction with the positive response from taxpayers but emphasiaed that those whose grace periods have ended must fully comply with e-Invoicing guidelines. Taxpayers are urged to maintain up-to-date records and ensure full compliance to avoid enforcement actions. For assistance, LHDN offers dedicated advisory services, including a 24-hour helpdesk at 03-8682 8000, MyInvois Live Chat, and email support at myinvois@ Taxpayers can also visit LHDN offices or submit feedback via the MyInvois customer form at - Bernama
