CCTV captures 'dangerous trespassers' using railway line as shortcut
Network Rail said the video shows elderly people and dog walkers 'carelessly' crossing the River Peffery in Dingwall using a railway bridge between Dingwall Canal South and North level crossings, rather than a road bridge situated nearby on Craig Road.
Trains pass through the area every day at speeds of up to 65mph, covering a 50-metre distance in less than two seconds.
'This footage is deeply concerning, showing people taking significant risks by using a railway bridge to cross the river,' said Innis Keith, health, safety and environmental director at Network Rail Scotland.
'It's extremely dangerous as trains can't stop quickly or swerve out of the way. A moment's misjudgement could have devastating consequences.
'Not only is trespassing dangerous, but it's also illegal. We're working closely with British Transport Police to identify anyone trespassing and those caught face prosecution and a hefty fine.'
Network Rail said it is working with Highland Council to explore the possibility of installing two wooden footbridges on either side of the existing railway bridge, providing an alternative route for pedestrians.
Mr Keith added: 'We know people are often just trying to save time or take what seems like the easiest route. But using the railway bridge as a shortcut is incredibly dangerous and against the law.
'We're asking everyone to think twice and choose safety instead. No shortcut is worth risking your life.'
The warning comes as Network Rail launches its You vs Train campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the risks around trespassing, showing the real life consequences of being struck by a train.
The campaign features an NHS trauma specialist who explains the catastrophic injuries caused by getting hit by a train, in a bid to reduce incidents on the railways.
Chief inspector Adam Swallow from British Transport Police said: 'Every year, my emergency services colleagues and I are faced with the awful consequences of preventable railway accidents. And we don't just respond, we remember too. Behind every statistic is a real person – a life needlessly lost or irreversibly changed and a family left devastated.
'As the summer holidays begin and more people are out and about, including teenagers and younger children, we're asking everyone to treat the railway with the seriousness and respect it demands; stay alert, avoid distractions, and never cross except at designated points. It could save your life, or someone else's.
'I'd encourage people to save 61016 into their phones and text us if they need us. In an emergency always dial 999.'

A 60-year-old woman found stabbed to death at home was 'connected' to a 20-year-old man found dead on train tracks three miles away in east London, police have revealed. Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke from the Met's Specialist Crime Command said: 'Our thoughts continue to remain with Nkiru's family at this difficult time. 'As our enquiries have progressed, we are confident that Nkiru's tragic death is connected to the death of a 20-year-old man on the train tracks at Romford station earlier that evening. 'This man was known to Nkiru and British Transport Police continue to investigate his death. 'I would like to thank the local community for their support with this investigation so far. 'Our officers will be continuing enquiries and we encourage anyone with any information to contact us.'

Tommy Robinson bailed after arrest on suspicion of grievous bodily harm
The far-right activist known as Tommy Robinson has been released on bail by police after being arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. Robinson, 42, was detained on Monday evening at Luton airport after a man was allegedly assaulted at a London railway station a week earlier. The investigating force, British Transport Police, said on Tuesday that the man they arrested at Luton airport had been bailed pending further inquiries until 2 September. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was arrested after arriving at Luton airport on a flight from Faro, Portugal. The incident that led to his arrest and criminal investigation took place on Monday 28 July at St Pancras train station in central London. Police said they were called at about 8.40pm to reports of an assault. The man alleged to have been assaulted, aged 64, had serious injuries, police said, and needed hospital treatment. Hours after the incident at St Pancras station, Robinson took a flight out of Britain, landing first in Tenerife, Spain. Once abroad, Robinson went from Tenerife to Faro before flying back to the UK on Monday where police were waiting for him. Police said the 42-year-old man they arrested had been 'wanted for questioning'. Video from the scene of the alleged assault, showed a 64-year-old man on the ground and Robinson appearing to claim he had acted in self-defence. The video does not show how the injured man came to be lying motionless on the floor. The man was admitted to hospital with head injuries and was released two days later. Robinson is a former leader of the English Defence League. The far-right monitoring group Hope Not Hate describes him as the 'best-known far-right extremist in Britain'. Announcing the arrest on Monday, British Transport Police said: 'Officers from BTP have tonight (4 August) arrested a 42-year-old man from Bedfordshire in connection to an assault at St Pancras station on 28 July. Tommy Robinson has been released on police bail after being arrested over an alleged assault at St Pancras railway station. The 42-year-old, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was arrested at Luton Airport on Monday evening in connection with the incident which took place on July 28. Footage shared on social media appeared to show Robinson pacing around the London station with another person lying still on the floor nearby. British Transport Police (BTP) said on Tuesday that he has been released on police bail until September 2 as inquires continue. The activist said in a lengthy video on social media that he acted in self-defence after a man physically confronted him. He urged the police to share the CCTV footage of what happened. Robinson was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and taken into custody after arriving in the UK on a flight from Faro in Portugal. He had been wanted for questioning after leaving the country for Tenerife in the early hours of July 29, BTP said. Robinson said he went to the Spanish island on a pre-booked trip and that he told police where he was as well as the date of his return. The victim was taken to hospital with what police described as serious injuries and he was discharged last Wednesday.
