‘Digital Nation Pakistan': AI curriculum across federal schools launched
Federal Minister for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced that AI and emerging technology education will now be made accessible to every child, starting this academic year. Over 1,000 teachers have already been trained, with summer sessions planned to expand and deepen their capacity.
'From computer literacy to artificial intelligence, educating our youth in cutting-edge technologies is no longer optional — it's essential,' said the minister. 'Our focus has shifted from just training numbers to actual employability and impact.'
She highlighted that a high-level committee, formed under the prime minister's directive, is reviewing national IT curricula with an emphasis on employability of school and college graduates. The revised curriculum, being jointly developed by the Ministry of Education, HEC, and National Curriculum Council, targets students from Grade 6 to 12.
Further key developments include: Smart labs, classrooms, and digital screens have already been installed in over 100 federal schools and colleges.
A hybrid/EdTech model is being rolled out to ensure modern education reaches remote areas.
The National AI Policy is actively working to prepare 10,000 AI trainers for nationwide deployment.
Google and Microsoft certifications will be offered to students to improve their international job prospects.
In a major international collaboration, Pakistan signed a deal with Huawei during the PM's recent visit to China, aiming to train 300,000 students in AI and digital skills. Over 200 students have already completed their training under this agreement, with the rest expected by year-end.
Minister Khawaja concluded that the real goal now is to create a digitally skilled, employable workforce, not just run training programmes.
'We are investing in people, in skills, and in future livelihoods. Every child deserves this opportunity,' she said.

PAF launches flood relief operation in GB, evacuates 75 stranded
Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has evacuated 75 stranded individuals from Gilgit-Baltistan in a large-scale flood relief operation, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Wednesday. 'Demonstrating unwavering resolve amidst difficult weather conditions and rugged mountainous terrain, PAF C-130 aircraft airlifted 7 tons of dry rations, daily use eatables and life-saving medicines from PAF Base Nur Khan to Gilgit,' the ISPR said. It added that the consignment will be distributed in remote flood-affected valleys in coordination with National Disaster Management Authority. 'Over the coming days, PAF aircraft and ground teams will remain engaged in sustained relief operations, delivering food, medicines, shelter and medical aid to vulnerable communities.' The timely and determined response by PAF has brought renewed hope to flood-hit families in Gilgit-Baltistan, reaffirming the unflinching resolve of Pakistan Armed Forces to stand shoulder to shoulder with the nation in every hour of trial, added the ISPR. As heavy monsoon rains continue to wreak havoc, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed an intensified and wide-reaching response to relief and rehabilitation efforts across the flood-affected area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The prime minister called for an uninterrupted electricity supply to the flood-stricken districts of KP for at least one week. He also instructed that all formalities related to the disbursement of financial aid to victims be completed without delay. NDMA officials told the meeting that more than 25,000 people have been rescued since the onset of flooding. A total of 411 medical camps have been established nationwide – 308 of them in KP alone. The Ministry of Finance informed the meeting that an additional Rs4 billion has been allocated to sustain ongoing rescue and relief operations. PM leads green push with 41m-tree plantation drive
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday launched the annual monsoon tree plantation campaign with the theme for the first week: "One Daughter — One Tree". As part of the campaign, 41 million new trees will be planted across the country over the next three months (Aug to Oct). "Tree plantation is an important national, environmental, and climatic duty. It is essential to instill a sense of responsibility about it among all citizens," the prime minister said while chairing a meeting to inaugurate the Annual Monsoon Tree Plantation Campaign. He directed that all relevant authorities must ensure that the tree plantation campaign was not just a symbolic activity but was implemented effectively. "Tree plantation is a top priority for providing a healthy natural environment for future generations and for protecting against the destruction caused by climate change," he said. The premier assured that the federal government will extend all possible support to make the tree plantation campaign a success. He stressed that all provincial governments, social and religious leaders, as well as all segments of society, particularly students, must play a constructive and coordinated role in the tree plantation campaign. The prime minister gave special instructions that the growth and survival of the planted trees should be monitored using modern technology. "Tree plantation has positive impacts on human life and plays a key role in the protection and enhancement of invaluable natural resources, wildlife, and vegetation", the prime minister noted. He said combating the harmful effects of climate change and increasing forest cover was only possible through an integrated and comprehensive strategy. The PM also gave special directions to pay particular attention to tree plantation in AJK and G-B to mitigate the impacts of seasonal and flood-related disasters. Separately, the premier reaffirmed that the government's health sector team, polio workers, and all relevant institutions were determined to completely eradicate polio from the country.

Govt mulls military courts appeal law
The federal government has begun consultations on a piece of legislation to grant ordinary citizens the right to appeal against trials in military courts, reliable sources revealed. On May 7, 2025, a seven-member constitutional bench of the Supreme Court, in a majority verdict, upheld the military trials of those accused in the May 9 cases and also restored the relevant provisions of the Pakistan Army Act, 1952 — provisions that had been voided by an SC bench in October 2023. The court ruling further stated that parliament must legislate within 45 days to ensure that ordinary citizens facing court-martial proceedings are given the right to freely appeal before high courts. Former chief justice of Pakistan Jawwad S Khawaja, who is also a party in the main case, later filed a contempt petition against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, arguing that no legislation had been passed to grant the right of appeal in violation of the court order. A highly reliable source told The Express Tribune that the government has now initiated consultations to provide the right of appeal to civilians convicted by military courts. According to sources, after the consultation process, a bill will be introduced to give the right of appeal before high courts. The ruling coalition now holds a two-thirds majority in parliament. The civil and military leaders of the country decided to refer cases of over 100 people who allegedly took active part in attacking military installations in the wake of former prime minister Imran Khan's first arrest from the premises of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on May 9, 2023. The PTI and a number of other petitioners including ex-CJP Khawaja approached the Supreme Court against trial of civilians in military courts and a SC full-court on October 23, 2023 not only declared these trial illegal by a majority vote but also annulled some provisions of the Pakistan Army Act, 1952.
