Woman suspected in 2009 cold case killing of Bay Area newborn arrested in Colorado

More than 16 years after a newborn girl was found dead in a San Francisco Bay Area dumpster, police have announced a Colorado woman has been arrested and charged with her murder. According to the Union City Police Department, the girl was found dead at the Parkside Apartments on Decoto Road on May 18, 2009 by a man searching for recyclables. Police named the girl Matea Esperanza, a name meaning "Gift from God" in Hebrew and "Hope" in Spanish. During the lengthy investigation, detectives said they were able to develop leads with what they described as "advanced" DNA analysis of evidence collected in 2009. Police said further DNA comparison led to 46-year-old Angela Onduto of Denver, who was identified as a person of interest during the early stages of the investigation. Angela Onduto of Denver, Colorado has been charged with murder in connection with the 2009 death of a newborn who was found in a dumpster in Union City, California. Union City Police Department Last month, around when the girl would have turned 16, Union City detectives said they traveled to Denver to coordinate with local law enforcement. Police arrested Onduto but charges were withheld pending additional forensic analysis and reviewing the medical examiner's findings. After the additional investigative work, police said the Alameda County District Attorney's Office filed a murder charge against Onduto. Denver Police took Onduto into custody late Wednesday. "The UCPD expresses deep gratitude that justice is progressing in Matea's case after 16 years, reaffirming the department's commitment to solving cold cases and bringing closure to the community," police said in a statement Thursday. Onduto remains in custody in Colorado as Union City detectives work on extraditing her back to California. In 2017, the Union City Police Officers' Association purchased a permanent marker for Esperanza, who is buried at the Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward. The department holds a memorial for her each May. REMEMBERING MATEA ESPERANZA On May 18th, 2009, officers responded to the report of a baby located in a dumpster at the... Trial date set for Detroit man charged in murder of prominent neurosurgeon

A trial date has been set for a Detroit man charged in the murder of prominent Detroit neurosurgeon Dr. Devon Hoover. Desmond Burks, 34, appeared in court Thursday for a formal arraignment after being bound over for trial last week. Burks will head to trial on Jan. 5, 2026. Burks is charged with first-degree premeditated murder, felony murder, larceny of over $20,000, using a computer to commit a crime, possession of a firearm by a felon, and three counts of felony firearm second offense. Hoover was found shot in the head and wrapped in a blanket in the attic of his Boston-Edison neighborhood home on April 23, 2023, after police conducted a wellness check at the residence. An autopsy in May 2023 revealed Hoover was shot twice in the back of the head. Burks was identified as a person of interest early in the investigation and was charged in August 2024. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said the investigation was complicated because many witnesses were reluctant to come forward with sensitive and personal information. Following Hoover's murder, Wayne County prosecutors say fraudulent transactions were reportedly made using the doctor's various bank accounts, and more than $30,000 was stolen from his accounts, as well as a Range Rover and two watches valued at $13,500. Authorities say Burks was seen on surveillance footage driving Hoover's Range Rover in the days following the doctor's murder. Prosecutors allege that text messages between Burks and Hoover established that the two were in an intimate relationship. Brian Douglas, a longtime friend of Hoover's, has attended nearly every one of Burks' court appearances, including Thursday's arraignment. He says Hoover's family and friends are finally one step closer to getting justice. "I was devastated when I heard. I was devastated because we almost reconnected, and we didn't," Douglas said. "When I saw who was victimized, and I heard who that person was, and I realized that person didn't deserve that, there was nothing else I could do but show up." Douglas says that after more than two years since his friend's murder, he still questions why such a good human being was taken away. "The point of it is, he should still be here," Douglas said. "He was murdered. He shouldn't have been murdered."

An Oklahoma pediatrician is accused of staging her daughter's accidental death in Florida

An Oklahoma pediatrician was accused of murder after, authorities said, she staged her daughter's accidental death at a vacation rental in suburban Miami, court records obtained Thursday show. Dr. Neha Gupta, 36, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder in Oklahoma City and is awaiting extradition to Florida in the June 27 death of her daughter, the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office said in a news release. The 4-year-old girl, identified in an affidavit in support of an arrest warrant as A.T., was found unresponsive in a pool at the home, but her lungs and stomach contained no water, prompting authorities to rule out drowning as the cause of death. A lawyer for Gupta said Thursday that he was disappointed the sheriff's office "decided to hastily arrest a grieving mother who fully cooperated with the police and who is absolutely devastated for the loss of her child." "We look forward to more evidence, evidence that the Miami Dade Sheriff's office could not possibly have obtained in the 24-hour investigation that they completed," the lawyer, Richard L. Cooper, said in an email. According to the affidavit, Gupta traveled to Florida from Oklahoma, where she is a doctor, on June 25 and rented a home in El Portal, north of Miami. Gupta told authorities that she arrived at the rental with her daughter between 7 and 8 p.m. June 26 after having spent the day at the beach. Gupta awoke the girl to feed her dinner at 9 p.m., and the 4-year-old remained awake until 12:30 a.m., the affidavit says. Gupta told authorities she was awakened about 3:20 a.m. by a noise and saw that her daughter was not in the bed they were sharing, according to the affidavit. A sliding glass door to the patio was open, Gupta told authorities, even though she said she had locked it before bed. Gupta "stated she then observed the 'deceased victim' submerged underwater within the swimming pool of the residence," the affidavit says. 'The Subject' stated she attempted to remove the victim from the pool; however, she was unsuccessful due to the fact that she is unable to swim." Gupta said she tried to help the girl for 10 minutes before she dialed 911, according to the affidavit. First responders performed CPR, but A.T. was pronounced dead at a hospital at 4:28 a.m., the affidavit says. During an autopsy Sunday, a pathologist with the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner Department found that the girl's lungs and stomach were "dry" and that cuts in her mouth and bruising in her cheeks were "not consistent" with the first responders' lifesaving efforts, according to the affidavit. The pathologist concluded that the girl was dead before she was put in the pool, the affidavit says. While the cause and manner of death are pending, the pathologist's preliminary findings indicate that the girl's injuries are consistent with asphyxiation by smothering, the affidavit says. The autopsy also showed that the girl's stomach was empty, contrary to what Gupta told authorities about having fed her at 9 p.m., the affidavit says. Gupta "attempted to conceal the killing of the 'deceased victim' by staging an accidental drowning within the swimming pool of a rental property," it says. The affidavit does not identify a possible motive. Gupta was in a custody battle with her ex-husband when his daughter died, and he was unaware that she had left Oklahoma, according to the document.
