
Coke to Colgate: Global companies see uneven India growth
Consumer confidence is soft and growth has somewhat sputtered - this was the broad market outlook, called out by CEOs of global consumer giants in recent earnings.
Dirk Van De Put, chair and CEO at Mondelez International, maker of Cadbury chocolates, said that in emerging markets such as India, Brazil and Mexico, consumers are "worried" about their personal finances and job security even as the firm gained market share in India during the quarter.
"Consumer confidence is softer in these markets...but emerging markets continue to be an attractive growth engine for us," Put said.
For Colgate-Palmolive, India has rather had a tough quarter on the back of "sluggishness in the urban class of trade." CEO Noel Wallace has the job cut out for the India team - getting the urban markets right and executing more effectively there.
The company, Wallace said, is relaunching the Colgate Total line in the market, focusing on entry price points and ramping up premiumisation.
"We're not pleased really with the performance we had in India, but we feel good about where we're headed in the back half (later part of the year). We have some higher-end premium innovation coming through the back half and into 2026," Wallace told investors. Colgate is also addressing the Rs 10 price point in India, the CEO said.
The Indian unit of the company reported a YoY drop in net sales and profits in Q1.
Consumption in urban markets had been sluggish over the past several quarters; there have been some signs of recovery but all companies are yet to see a full revival across urban regions.
Even as tax breaks, lower food inflation, and interest rates have put some money in the hands of consumers, recovery has been only gradual and urban continues to lag rural markets. Job uncertainties and layoffs in the IT sector, which employs a large share of the middle class, pose fresh challenge for the sector, risking a slowdown of the revival process. Beverage giants Coca-Cola and PepsiCo felt the heat of short summers in June quarter.
Coke's consolidated unit case volume declined 1%, weighed down by declines in India where a brief border tension with Pakistan also impacted consumer sentiment, alongside Mexico and Thailand. PepsiCo reported a decline in unit volume for its beverage business in India even as the convenient foods business fared well.
P&G said that growth trends in its enterprise (emerging) markets have been varied. While Turkey has returned to a 17% organic sales growth, India is still growing at 5% and Middle East remains challenging.

Financial Performance for Q1FY26: Division Revenue: Division Sales Volume: Business and operational Highlights for Q1 FY2026: -Net Debt to Shareholder Equity at 0.4x -Consolidated Basic EPS of Q1 FY2026 is Rs. (73) million with an EBITDA margin of (5.9)%. * Price realization for per CBM in export and India are Rs. 21,476 and Rs. 24,238 * Capacity utilization at 58% - Laminates: * Reported EBITDA of Rs. 45 million with an EBITDA margin of 10.2%. * Price realization for per sheet in export and India are Rs. 719 and Rs. 545 * Capacity utilization at 83% Commenting on the performance Mr. Rushil Thakkar, Managing Director said: "During the first quarter of FY2026, Rushil Decor reported consolidated Revenue from Operations of Rs. 1,792 million. The quarterly performance was impacted by an unfortunate fire incident at the Andhra Pradesh MDF manufacturing facility on 9th April. I am relieved to report that there were no fatalities or injuries. Importantly, the fire occurred outside the main manufacturing premise and did not cause any damage to the core machinery or any inventory. Production was temporarily disrupted, resulting in a negative impact on our financial results, and resumed on 14th May. The earlier announced estimate of Rs. 7 crore relates to material damage at the site. The Company has adequate insurance coverage in place, which includes both material damage and loss of profit, and is already in the process of filing the insurance claim related to the incident. The MDF business reported revenue of Rs. 1,242 million in Q1 FY2026 as compared to Rs 1,692 million in Q1 FY2025. Although the loss of production over the 43 days shut down period which also includes 8 days of planned annual maintenance shutdown, resulted in reduced revenues and volume, the MDF business rapidly normalized. While total volumes were down, blended realizations improved by 4.5% YoY, driven by pricing discipline and product mix. The Laminates business reported revenue of Rs. 445 million in Q1 FY2026 as compared to Rs. 471 million in Q1 FY2025. The decline was primarily due to lower export volumes, which were down 16.9% YoY. However, blended realizations improved by 5.0% YoY, with export market realizations rising 5.7% YoY and Indian market realisation increasing 7.3% YoY, driven by selective price adjustments and a favourable product mix. During the quarter, commercial production commenced under Phase 1 of the Jumbo Laminates facility in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, with an annual installed capacity of 1.2 million sheets (if considered as 1 mm sheet of single side decorative Laminate). However, dispatches were deferred as the Company was in the process of securing mandatory certifications required for exports to key international markets such as Europe. With the certifications now in place and the machinery aligned to the targeted product mix, the Company is on track to begin dispatches from Q2 FY2026. Building on this momentum, we are focused on starting phase 2 the Project which will add another 1.6 million sheets of capacity by Q3 FY26. On the funding side, the Company received Rs. 930.4 million out of the total Rs. 1,226.6 million through the preferential allotment. A portion of warrants was forfeited due to non-conversion by some allottees for very particular reasons. However, this has not affected the progress of the Jumbo Laminates phase 2 expansion plan. As part of long-standing commitment to sustainability, Rushil Decor has successfully planted 24 million saplings across Andhra Pradesh, including in Anakapalli, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and East Godavari districts. This initiative supports environmental preservation while empowering small and marginal farmers through agroforestry integration, technical assistance and subsidy-backed eucalyptus plantation programs. Looking ahead, while Q1 FY2026 was impacted by a one-off event, we expect Q2 FY2026 to reflect significantly improved performance compared with the same quarter in the prior year. This improvement will be driven by higher capacity utilization at the Andhra Pradesh MDF plant, along with increased contribution from value-added products, increased profitability in the PVC business and full quarter of revenue from jumbo laminates Phase 1. We remain focused on disciplined execution, improving operational efficiency and enhancing long-term value for all stakeholders." Raghuram Rajan reacts to Donald Trump's 50% tariffs on India: ‘It's hard to negotiate with a gun to your head…'
Renowned economist Raghuram Rajan has called out United States President Donald Trump's 'pressure tactics' in imposing 50 per cent tariffs on India and Brazil, in an interview with Brazilian economic and financial publication, Valor. Speaking on Donald Trump's apparent 'shift in mood' against India, Raghuram Rajan said that while trade with Russia could be 'reconsidered', its is 'hard to negotiate with a gun to your head', and that this seems like an 'exercise in power' from the US. Donald Trump last week said the US would impose 50 per cent tariffs on India as 'punishment' for buying oil from Russia. He has in the past also criticised India and Brazil for being part of what he dubbed 'anti-American' BRICS bloc. Brazil has also been slapped with similar 50 per cent duties. According to the professor of finance at the University of Chicago, former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor, and a former International Monetary Fund (IMF), chief economist, the time for a joint global response to US tariffs has 'past'. 'It's hard to negotiate with a gun to your head. And that's basically what's happening right now. I hope sanity will prevail in US relations with India,' he said. The public, threatening aspect has made negotiations difficult, according to Raghuram Rajan. 'Lowering tariffs can help our economy. But again, it's hard to negotiate with a gun to your head. I hope that tempers cool and talks resume, because a 50 per cent tariff is unsustainable—not just for India, but also for the US, which risks alienating a country it hopes will be a strategic partner. People remember these things for a long time, and turning them away is rarely smart geopolitics,' he cautioned. Raghuram Rajan noted that India may have expected trade talks to extend till October-November, and so held firm on some areas while negotiating. 'But that's not how it's worked for countries that have already reached agreements. This isn't about a balanced trade deal; it's an exercise of power.' He added that India could give in on trade with Russia, since current prices are not much different across markets. 'If Russian oil were cut off entirely, prices would rise, but India could handle that. The bigger issue is political: an overt public decision to stop buying from Russia would be seen domestically as bowing to US pressure, which plays badly in any democracy. If Washington had quietly asked India to phase out Russian oil, it might have been acceptable,' he added. On the impact of the tariffs, Raghuram Rajan noted that $80 billion of Indian exports to the US would become 'unviable', and in return some $40 billion of US imports into India, including Apple products, could 'hurt America to some degree'. On Donald Trump's opposition to BRICS, Raguram Rajan noted that as a group of emerging economies, the interests of BRICS nations has 'diverged over time'. He added, 'India is not anti-US, and neither is Brazil in its current government. Being pulled into a bloc seen as anti-American is problematic for both.' 'If tariffs stabilise, even at high levels, the world will adapt. It won't be as efficient as the low-tariff era, but supply chains will adjust over time. The bigger problem is volatility. If today it's 50 per cent tariffs on one set of countries and tomorrow another, uncertainty will keep disrupting trade and investment. Stability is essential, and that's what's in the shortest supply right now,' he added. 'It would have been useful to form a broad coalition early on, before individual countries struck their own deals with Washington. That would have increased bargaining power. But now, with Japan, the EU, and the UK satisfied with their arrangements, it's harder—especially if China is excluded, since both Beijing and Washington may prefer separate dealings,' according to Raghuram Rajan. 'It's good for Brazil and India to talk about boosting trade and investment, but a united global front is probably too late at this stage. Still, maintaining dialogue is important, because this may not be the last disruption—more could come if the U.S. administration targets other countries,' he added.
