College football latest: AP Top 25 preseason rankings to be released
The AP Top 25 college football poll preseason rankings will be released Monday at noon EDT. A tradition since 1936, no organization has been ranking teams and naming a major college football national champion longer than the AP — and now you can follow live updates before and after the poll drops. See where your team ranks and which teams and players to watch ahead of the 2025 season. Here's what to know: 1. Who decides the rankings? The Top 25 voters are over 60 journalists covering college football at AP-member news organizations. They're urged to base their votes on head-to-head results, not reputation, preseason speculation or regional bias. 2. Which teams finished on top last season? Ohio State (14-2), after beating Notre Dame for its first national championship since 2014, secured the No. 1 spot in last season's final Top 25 poll. The Irish (14-2) finished No. 2 for their highest end-of-season ranking since 1993. Oregon (13-1) lost to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl quarterfinal and finished No. 3. 3. When does the 2025 season start? The wait is almost over — opening weekend begins Saturday, Aug. 23. Who topped last year's preseason poll? Georgia was No. 1 in the preseason AP Top 25 a year ago, earning 1,532 points and 46 first-place votes. Ohio State was second ahead of Oregon, Texas and Alabama. The Buckeyes went on to win the national championship and Georgia wound up sixth in the final Top 25. The Big Ten and SEC rivalry goes beyond the football field. Over the offseason, the two most powerful conferences struggled to nail down a new playoff format. The Big Ten wants a 16-team format, with four guaranteed spots for both the Big Ten and SEC, two each for the Big 12 and ACC and 1 at-large bid. The SEC favors five conference champions and 11 at-large bids, which would presumably favor the top conferences most seasons. Stay tuned! Why bother with preseason rankings? There is a school of thought that preseason rankings for any sport are a waste of time; after all, how do you accurately assess teams with new players from last season that have not played a game yet? That argument has not and probably never will stop the proliferation of preseason guesswork, including media outlets with full-time journalists who provide analyses of just how good a team might be. After all, the conversation around the season isn't limited to game days. And if a preseason ranking turns out to be wildly inaccurate – as they can often be – that's part of the conversation, too. What is the AP Top 25? The AP Top 25 college football poll preseason rankings will be released today at 12 p.m. ET. A tradition since 1936, no organization has been ranking teams and naming a major college football national champion longer than the AP — and now you can follow live updates before and after the poll drops. Spain replaces women's team coach Montse Tomé with Sonia Bermúdez
MADRID (AP) — Spain's women's national team is making a coaching change two weeks after reaching the final of the European Championship. Montse Tomé will not have her contract renewed and will be replaced by former player Sonia Bermúdez, the Spanish soccer federation said Monday. Another former Spain player, Iraia Iturregi, was named the team's second coach. The decision was made by the federation's board members after Tomé led Spain to the Euro 2025 final, which it lost to England in a penalty shootout on July 27. Tomé replaced former coach Jorge Vilda following the team's World Cup title in 2023. She led Spain to the title of the inaugural Women's Nations League in 2024. Her current contract with the national team was valid until the end of the month. Tomé was the first woman to coach the senior women's team in Spain. She had been an assistant to Vilda during the World Cup and was promoted in the fallout of former federation president Luis Rubiales' nonconsensual kiss of player Jenni Hermoso during the World Cup's awards ceremony in Australia. Spain has enjoyed some peace and stability since Rubiales was convicted of sexual assault for the kiss that ignited one of the worst crises in Spanish soccer. The outrage surrounding the scandal led to widespread changes and improved conditions for the women's national team. Spanish society called for more support for women, and sports officials ultimately were forced to review outdated protocols related to the women's squad. Bermúdez was a Spain international and also played for Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, among other clubs. She retired as a player in 2020. Bermúdez had been coaching the youth squads of Spain's national team. She was currently with the under-23 squad. The board that made the decision was composed of 30 members, half of them women.

Transfer news, rumors: Grealish to Everton, Savinho to Spurs
The latest transfer news focuses on Jack Grealish potentially getting a move where he will play more often, while Savinho could be swapping Manchester for London. MORE — Premier League 2025-26 schedule, how to watch Here's the latest on both developing deals. Jack Grealish to Everton on loan is getting close So, this is one of those deals which makes sense for absolutely everyone. According to David Ornstein, Everton and Manchester City have agreed terms on a season-long loan for Jack Grealish and the medical will take place shortly. There is also an option for Everton to buy Grealish for $67 million next summer if the loan goes well. The England international, 29, was not a regular for City last season and his career is in real danger of petering out. This move to Everton should suit him perfectly and Grealish will play week in, week out for the Toffees. David Moyes loves to help resurrect careers and Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye should both be given the freedom to attack as Everton badly need some more creativity in the final third. Grealish will provide that and provided he stays fit, this is the perfect chance for him to be the main man on a team on the way up in the Premier League. If he can do that, he also has the carrot dangling in front of him of getting into Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the 2026 World Cup. Savinho to Spurs a surprise, but could be a great fit Another attacking player who could be leaving Manchester City is Brazilian winger Savinho. According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, Spurs are in talks with City over signing Savinho and he is keen a move to north London. Per the report, Spurs have offered $58 million but City want more. Savinho, 21, only joined City last summer from their sister club Troyes but he had a very decent first season in the Premier League. However, with City signing Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders to go alongside Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, Oscar Bobb and Omar Marmoush as attacking midfield options, it appears that Savinho may not get as many minutes going forward. Add in reports that City could try to sign Rodrygo with plenty of attacking players moving on this summer and it's a little easier to understand why Savinho could leave. Is this a good move for Spurs? It would seem so. Savinho would be the replacement for Heung-min Son and even though he often plays on the right wing, where Brennan Johnson is a regular starter, Savinho is flexible. His quality on the ball is also something Spurs need and Savinho whipping in crosses for Dominic Solanke to finish is an exciting proposition.
