A-League: Ufuk Talay to remain in charge of Sydney FC

Sky News AU14-05-2025

Sydney FC has kept faith in Ufuk Talay, who will remain coach of the Sky Blues for at least another season.
The star-studded Sky Blues' failure to qualify for this season's A-League finals series clouded Talay's future despite him telling News Corp Australia last month that he had agreed to terms on a new two-year deal.
However, the contract was not signed, and having failed to meet expectations in Sydney's 2024-25 campaign, Talay's new contract is now only guaranteed until the end of next season, with an option in the Sky Blues' favour to keep him at the club for the season after.
Apart from missing out on the A-League playoffs, the Sky Blues also missed out on millions of dollars by failing to reach the AFC Champions League Two final after falling short in their two-legged semi-final against Singapore club Lion City Sailors.
'Following a disappointing season it is very easy to simply deflect everything on to the head coach, but this is just one piece of our holistic football strategy to which we will make appropriate changes, and post our men's football review, the Sydney FC board believe Ufuk remains the coach who has the ability to fulfil that strategy,' the club's chief executive Mark Aubrey said.
'Last season was disappointing by our high standards, but this is a long-term strategy and we are making inroads.
'We pride ourselves on having a proactive, attacking, dynamic, football philosophy that all our coaches adhere to while integrating our youth pathways.
'In Ufuk we have a coach who has shown his ability to implement an attacking brand of football while bringing through young talent like Adrian Segecic, Hayden Matthews, Jake Girdwood-Reich and Wataru Kamijo.
'Youth development and professional pathways have always been important to Sydney FC, but with recent changes to the A-League, they are becoming more important than ever.
'However, winning trophies is a must for Sydney FC. That remains our ultimate goal, and we must get back to that.
'There are valuable learnings and improvements to make, but we remain determined that we are on the right path.'
Talay is confident a 'redefined squad' can deliver the Sky Blues success next season.
'We came close to making history in Asia and achieving something special last season and while it ultimately was disappointing, we were not too far away,' Talay said.
'I think there were still plenty of positives to build on, particularly our ability to score goals and entertain as well as the emergence of our younger players.
'We do need to take learnings from last season and will work better to balance our recruitment with our younger players.'
Off-contract Socceroos midfielder Anthony Caceres' Sydney future remains clouded, while attacking weapons Segecic and Jaiden Kucharski are to set depart the club along with midfielder Max Burgess.
The Sky Blues, who have already announced the departure of former Socceroos goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne, are hopeful of retaining experienced defender Alex Grant.

Goals, grit and a splash of pink: NPFL round six delivers big

It was another action-packed weekend of footy in the North Pilbara Football League, as round six saw fierce battles, passionate crowds and a community united for a cause. Port Hedland's Colin Matheson Reserve came alive on June 7 as the Hedland Rovers put on a show in front of a vibrant home crowd for Pink Day, drawing more than 300 spectators and raising over $12,500 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The women's match kicked off the weekend, with the Karratha Kats dominating against the Hedland Rovers, 6.1 (37) to 2.1 (13). The Rovers swamped the Kats in the reserves, 16.7 (103) to 5.2 (32), and 13.12 (90) to 9.10 (64) in the League. 'It was a thrilling day on and off the field, with both the reserves and league team claiming victory; reserves with a commanding 71-point win and league winning by 26 points,' Port Hedland Rovers president Kristel Keyser said. 'The women's team also put on a strong performance in their closest game of the season against Kats, going down by just 24 points after a hard-fought contest.' Over at Bulgarra Reserve, the Karratha Falcons brought a festival feel to footy with their first 'Falcons Football Frenzy' — an all-day showcase of games across junior and senior divisions. In the women's game, the Dampier Sharks shrugged off an early challenge from the Falcons to dominate 4.8 (32) to 1.7 (13). 'The Falcons came out hard and fast, catching us slightly on the back foot early on,' Dampier Sharks women's coach Matt Burgess said. 'But after conceding the first goal, we found that extra bounce and momentum we needed to lift. 'It was a massive team effort that brought about a few exciting firsts — most notably Maddison Kelly, who kicked her first goal for the Sharks on debut, a huge moment.' The league and reserves matches went down to the wire, with the Falcons coming out on top against the Sharks 8.7 (55) to 7.10 (52) in the reserves, and the Sharks pulling through in the league to claim the win 11.4 (70) to 9.13 (67). 'It was a great contest throughout the game, with each team taking the lead at different times throughout,' Karratha Falcons League coach Dean McDonald said. 'Sharks took their opportunities in front of goals and we didn't, which hurt us with the final result. 'Unfortunately we lacked the urgency to man-up defensively in the final quarter. Full credit to the Sharks who played the game out well with possession football.' At Wickham Town Oval, the Wickham Wolves notched a triple win against the South Hedland Swans, 6.11 (47) to 3.0 (18) in the women's, 17.10 (112) to 9.6 (60) in the reserves and 28.16 (184) to 4.4 (28) in the league.

Andrew Redmayne's deal to return to Central Coast Mariners now uncertain

Former Socceroos goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne's hopes of rejoining Central Coast Mariners are in jeopardy after an apparent about-face from club owner and chairman Mike Charlesworth. It was announced in April that veteran gloveman Redmayne was parting ways with Sydney FC at the end of the 2024-25 A-League season after eight years with the Sky Blues, having lost his first-team place to Harrison Devenish-Meares. It's understood that soon after the announcement, 36-year-old Redmayne signed a contract with the Mariners, the club where he started his A-League career as a teenager in 2008. Sources close to the cash-strapped Mariners say that Charlesworth approved the deal. However, it now believed that as part of the club's current freeze on signing players, Charlesworth has back-tracked on bringing Redmayne back to Gosford, potentially leaving the experienced gloveman in limbo. A potential lifeline looms for Redmayne if English Championship club Queens Park Rangers commit to buying the Mariners. A decision is expected soon from QPR, although it's understood there is also a consortium of Australian businessmen interested in purchasing a stake in the Mariners on the proviso that Charlesworth retains 40 per cent of the club ownership. Meanwhile, star defender Brian Kaltak, whose departure from the Mariners was confirmed on Thursday, has joined Perth Glory on a multi-year deal. The 31-year-old Vanuatu international, who won two A-League championships and an AFC Cup during his three seasons with Central Coast, said it was 'time to try something new'. 'This a new chapter for me and I'm excited for it,' Kaltak said. 'This move will be good for me and good for my football.' In other A-League news, Macarthur FC has announced the departure of four players – left-back Ivan Vujica, right-back Yianni Nicolaou, and midfielders Danny De Silva and Peter Makrillos.
